Affliction Postpones Oct. 11 “Day of Reckoning” Show In Las Vegas

Affliction MMA has postponed it latest show scheduled for Oct. 11 from the Thomas & Mack Arena in Las Vegas, NV.

According to Sherdog, the October show has been postponed until January 17th and is expected to now take place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. A formal explanation is expected from Affliction later in the day.

The show was to be headlined by former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski and PRIDE heavyweight veteran Josh Barnett.

Affliction VP Tom Atencio states the UFC has been interfering with the promotions ability to market the event in Las Vegas:

“They’ve been messing with me every step of the way….There have been issues that I’ve been dealing with. So I can’t say it’s them, but there’s been things we’ve been dealing with that have never happened before, so I guess that’s why.”

MMA Rated is reporting that ticket sales were lacking for the October event.

tickets sells have been quite poor. We’ve heard that as low as 700 tickets had been been sold for the event. For ring events, the Thomas & Mack Center can hold up up to 19, 522 spectators.

Man, this sucks big time. I sure hope they can get their act together and come out stronger. We all desperately need a stable and roster-rich alternative to UFC.

looks like dana might be right. he said last month that affliction won't make it till january 2009. he also said elitexc would tank, and so far, elitexc is 55 million in the red.

I'm starting to get pissed with all of these postponed events and fights. If Affliction wants to get a fan base they need to get good shows put together and make them happen.

when have they postponed events or fights they have only done one show and they are trying to put together great cards.the problem was the tried to put the show on in vegas and the ufc blocked them and caused as much problems for the as they could.

I love watching mma so much that I watch the same old replays of wec on versus. I know that not every decent fighter can fight in the ufc. I really hope that affliction can hang in there, although my wife gets pissed if I buy 2 ppvs a month (ufc and affliction).

    September 10, 2008 at 3:58 pm

why would you want that tim, since affliction the ufc has stepped up the cards and given free events.

I guess I should read the article then. Still sucks they had to postpone. I guess the UFC doesn’t want to share.

I still think they’re stupid for using a ring instead of a cage. Why the fuck do MMA organizations use rings? So stupid.

Tim Just curious as to why you want them to fail?

    September 11, 2008 at 12:48 am

Well lets see i dont care either way but from a business stand point there an insult they come in and offer Sylvia 800K and Fedor 1.3Mil to fight and others total pay out was 6mil i think and they did this just to get them themsleves noticed and they keep saying they will keep paying the fighters this much.. which is fine but they didnt even break even on the first one they lost millions and a company cant afford this even with Trump backing them up. You know how many time a Trump business has failed because he got in over his head to early on, he has been bankrupt several times. I do not see this Affliction growing with what they are putting out for Fight pay hell they couldnt even afford to market the business in Vegas or anywhere else except NY. You cant pay fighter that much from the beginning and excpct the business to grow…if the UFC did this they would surely been gone a long time ago as they over 250 fighters under contract. I am not going to get into it but Affliction and Elite XC are close to being done as they cant offer the fighter depth that the UFC can, they can only afford to have maybe 30 fighter under contract at one time. I dont see them going anywhere but down but if they make some changes they could be okay either way i really dont care but as i said from a business perspective they are failing.

Right. I see your points. But from a fan stand point dont you wanna see more big time shows out there. I mean regardless of what they paid the fighters they did have some big names on that card. I personally hope they succeed and give the UFC a run. This is better for the fans and will also help out some fighters that dont get paid what they should from the UFC. There are a lot of really good fighters that get washed out because they loose a couple in the UFC. I understand that but I would still like to see some of them fight elsewhere. The more circuits the more opportunity for up and comers to get noticed also.

tim the ufc was down millions also it took time to build, so the fact that there first show lost money is not surprizing to anyone, they pretty much knew they would and for there first show they have probally done better than anyone else did doing over 100k buys.

also since the card has been moved to jan FEDOR is back on the card and belfort will be too, the card will be much better now and i heard they might sratch the barnett vs aa and make it fedor vs aa but they have not decied yet, plus there is alot of big news coming some from affliction possibly a deal with HBO or something else big.

ps. tom barnett would beat aa

  20. TIM

    September 11, 2008 at 7:49 am

Of course but i stick to one promotion as i am not going to waste my money on anything else unless its free, The UFC built a reputible company that is a house hold name and with all due respect they were in debt once but they built there name on success due to fighters names and word of mouth and putting on very good fights. Anyone can do that but the way they built their Organazation is far different than how Affliction and Elite XC are trying to build theirs..It really doesnt matter cause these fighters are only their for hte money and rightfully so but what happens when they cant afford to pay there fighters the same as they did in the first show…plus only having 1 or 2 shows a year wont cut it when you have the UFC puttting on more than 15 a year sometimes twice a month you cant compete. Business wise they are in hot water and they will not survive if they keep pouring out money like they are to their fighters and not getting any marketing out of it. I guarantee you that Affliction will not have more than 3 or 4 shows next year…Elite XC is just working themselves in a bigger whole and i honestly dont know why they are still in business. MMA nees something similiar to the MLB…different division but also different leagues…Single A, Double A and Triple A and then the MAJORS. Not necessarily just like that but you get the idea.

  21. roy

    September 11, 2008 at 8:37 am

i do agree with some of that tim as far as different leagues and all but mma is still young and things still need to fall into place untell than i will enjoy any mma i can get at all levels, you would be surprized at the great shows and history you are missing by only watching the ufc, but keep watching and in time you will probally become a fan of mma and not just the ufc. try dream out they are just as good or even better than the ufc so far.and affliction is putting together strong cards right now weather they make it or not don't miss out well there around.

  22. TIM

    September 11, 2008 at 8:46 am

I understand and i am a fan of MMA i just personally wont buy the show if it isnt the UFC or Free or a top notch fight and thats just me. Thats just me though…maybe i will see if i can ask my dad who know sthe mayor of anaheim and see if he can get tickets to the Affliction show in Anaheim. i have used their Box suites before for other things there…Ducks games…clippers games etc…anyways it would be a good change to see a different show for once.

if you can get in to that show i bet you wil change your mind, the first show was worth buying to me but if you can watch fedor live do it.i am going to try to go to the next show there to(i will have to pay) i grew up right around there.

    September 11, 2008 at 1:02 pm

Thats Great…i dont know if it will happen but i will definetly ask and see its worth the try. i have seen everything at the Pond oh wait Honda Center…gay ass name…even wrestling….i think the most fun one was Arena Football and the Circus as sad as it sounds. Anways i grew up around the Anaheim Hills/YL area…good to find a fellow OC dude. I wil definetly give it a shot i would like to see him live and see what all the hype is about. Seeing AA again wouldnt hurt either.

i also think Arlovski would beat Barnett. but if they can put aa vs. Fedor in the next affliction show then i'm all for it. i realize that the ufc has to protect their monopoly but for the fans, it is disappointing that affliction had to reschedule. Dana, i like what you've done for mma, but how much do you want it to succeed? does mma matter more to you than the dominance of the ufc?

  27. roy

    September 12, 2008 at 1:42 am

i don't know if the fight with aa vs barnett does happen i will take all bets, but most likely they will witch it to fedor vs aa and that is fine with me.

It's probably for the best that they postponed the event, but if they were smart they would have postponed it when they knew that Fedor was out.

    September 12, 2008 at 7:54 am

This is a real disappointment , Affliction knows how to put a decent fight card but should have known better than to take this event to the fertittas back yard. business wise it was a bad move.

    September 12, 2008 at 6:31 pm

i think tim is right about affliction, they gave out way to much money on their first fight card, they were even paying UFC fighters to wear Affliction gear during their matches lol. so i think if they want to stay alive they should market alot cleaner and mange money better until they start to build their empire, but you also have to spend money to make money right? I would like to see affliction stay around like some guys said on this board it would be really good for the MMA world and would give the fans alot more to look forward to. just like we like watching 2 guys fight it out in the ring, we would also like to see 2 MMA companies fight it out for that number 1 ranking spot!

To sit and watch the worlds highest quality fighters is superb, Affliction can gaurantee this for us. I am a massive fan of UFC but sometimes wonder if what i'm watching is for real or fixed…

Ring or cage, either way its all MMA. You will never see Fedor fighting in the UFC as he knows dives are in your contract.

All fans off MMA should support this organisation to the max and watch it grow.. UFC has had its time in my book and its time it moved over.
