Anderson Silva: Not Risking Career To Satisfy Fans

Anderson Silva on Tatame:

“I would have a lot to risk. I’m not risking something that took a long time for me to win….Unfortunately, you can’t always do what people want. I try to fight and don’t get hurt and this is working over all these years. Sometimes I can fight faster, sometimes not, showing superiority, is better for me, for my career and the athletes who fight with me. Even because Thales is a dangerous athlete and I couldn’t risk something more.”

Anderson Silva speaks out following his highly criticized UFC 97 win over fellow Brazilian Thiago Leites.

Come on let the smack talk begin…as i know what i said is going to piss some people off, thats fine with me i can back it up anyday and the fact remains we all have valid points but its looking beyond the superficial side where you will see mine and others logic into MMA.

PoppyNick I never said anything about submissions. I was saying when there is no damage done ina fight then it just isnt what people want to see. And I do watch boxing and I would much rather see a stand up war then a submission fight. And so would most everyone else. Thats why Chuck made so much money and its the same reason that Damian Maia will never be a superstar. If you cant really beat someone up then you will never go down as one of the best. Back on poimt again. PoppyNick if u honestly liked that fight then I will have no problem calling u a bitch. Theres a name for you. Come on lets stop calling eachother names. Jesus stop being a little bitch. Im sorry you like to watch fights that like I said 99% of the people dont like to watch. NO action is not what people want. I cant even believe people are saying this was a great showing from Anderson. Tyhe WHOLE fight he was getting booed. Maybe YOU need to go to that BJJ gym and stop watching UFCs and posting on here. This site is for actual people who like to see fights. Not see a guy try and outpoint somebody.

And like I said before its not just Andersons fault but it sure fuck is partly his fault.

Steve I have a name for you…it's idiot. I have several more, but I thought I better stick with one your small mind can understand. Kinda like it only understands one side of MIXED martial arts.

  5. Tim

    April 23, 2009 at 8:38 am

Steve its called MIXED MARTIAL ARTS for a reason, again if you are always looking for the KO then your in the wrong line buddy…this is Mixed Martial Arts and what dont you understand about it otherwise it would be called BOXING oh wait we already have that sport dont we, two very different sports. Your simply just a SUPERFICIAL FAN thats all you are who wants to see what they want to see and if they dont get it than your pissed off…well tough shit Steve…If you always want to see someone get beat to crap than watch Boxing, watch the WWE, TNA the Fake entertainment…The one thing about MMA you dont understand is that its unpredictable and anything can happen. while i respect your opinions it still believe your just a superficial fan and not a true MMA who understands how MMA works and how fighters fight and why they fight… TO WIN.

    ^^^ RIGHT ON ^^^

With the exception of pro-wrestling, these things are SPORTS, not entertainment. Are people entertained by it? Of course. But if an athlete is in it for the right reasons, they're in it for the LOVE OF THE SPORT, not to entertain crowds. I know guys who PAY to play just because they want to be able to do what they love. If a guy is in it for the money, I don't want to watch it anyway.

i can appreciate anderson not wanting to go to the ground with thales but when thales had his back to the fence anderson still wasnt engaging. both fighters contributed to a very broing fight because of their style clash. i think maia would take some bombs to drag anderson to the matt and wouldnt butt scoot at all. i think it's funny everyone is defending anderson when hes fighting not to lose but probably were talking mad shit when sylvia was doing it when he was champ.

exactly dane, like i have already said he can do what he wants but people might not like it and he is already not the bigest draw.and sorry to break this to you guys but the ufc is not a sport its sports entertainment intell the go with a ranking system and don't just put fights together that make them money thats what it is and if anderson is not making them money dana gets mad.

Again we all have valid points but when it comes down to it Winning is more important to the fighters by any means necessary and take that for what you want good or bad your right its entertainment but its also a fighters career first and they dont want to lose so they stick to their game plans no matter how boring it may be its called playing it smart…I am done this is a never ending arguement.

Tim u calling me a superficial fan is funny. I am not the only one that thought that fight was a joke. The yahoo main page had for a title saying the fight was pathetic. All the fans were booing and even like I have already said Dana himself talked bad about the fight. Saying it was horrible. He said he didnt even want to go to the post fight press conference b/c of how shitty it was. Sorry that nobody besides a couple of people liked the fight. Tim, Nichole and whoever Daniel is. The fight sucked ass and no mma fighter should be scared to lose. Anderson was scared to lose so he didnt even try and finish the fight. This is NOT what the BEST FIGHTER in the world should do. Lookat the other top guys in the world. Atleast they try and finish fights. Anyone who defends Anderson here is simply stupid. Why would you defend him?? So you can see another fight like his last 2? It just doesnt make since. You 3 just dont get it still. This is a business. If Anderson fights like this people are not going to order it. The average fan doesnt care about seeing 2 guys do nothing for an enitre fight. The main event is suppose to be a badass fight. Not a sparring session. You guys can talk shit all you want but here is a fact the whole crowd booed for a reason and dana was imbarrassed. Also another thing Nichole you say dana is saying the fight sucked to suck up to the fans? LOL he is doing it b/c he wants Anderson to actualy fight next time. And give the crowd what they want. Then u call him a bussiness man. of course he is a bussinessman and as a bussinessman wouldnt it be in his best interest to try and make the fans happy by getting a better showing from his fighter. He isnt saying the fight sucked ass because of your reason duh lmao.

Now I am done with this arguement. If u want to see technique go watch so non contact shitor like Dane said college wrestling lmao. the ufc has fans because of the badass fights they put on. All the biggest stars lay it on the line. As much as I hate Lesnar atleast he is willing to get after it.

Steve the only person talking shit is you. In fact that seems to be the only thing that spews from your mouth. The few of us defending Silva wouldn't contend that the fight was boring. It wasn't the most exciting fight, but to be pissed off at a fighter for it is ridiculous. He did what he is supposed to do, WIN. Can't fault him for that. Silva has spoiled the casual fan with his earlier wins, but you can't talk shit about someone who owns the UFC record for consecutive wins.

I'm a gym rat so even though that fight didn't have the finish that we expect from Silva I was still impressed. He still showed me crazy striking ability and some dirty side kicks to the knee.

If anyone here saw Leites fight Kampmann he took a beating from a very good kickboxer an kept on going. Kampman unloaded on him at points and the guy has an iron chin. Silva isn't stupid he knows Leites can take a punch. So he targeted his leg. Yeah he played around too much be he still is P4P number 1 in my book.

People are bagging on Steve for saying it's partly Silvas fault but I agree with that. He had the guy hurt and in the third broke his spirit but still didn't finish the fight. When you are doing soccer kicks and the guy doesn't repond you should attack. I didn't lose an ounce of respect for Silva but I think he could have finished Leites.

MOrey what you wrote was brilliant and i agree with everything you said. I know silva could beat wandy 9/10 but it would make my day… my mma lie if some how WANDY caught anderson with a right hook and put him to sleep.

I dont like serra but i thought it was hilarious how he put GSP to sleep. I think if WANDY PUT ANDERSON TO SLEEP it would be a bigger upset… ANYONE AGREE?

i totally agree. How many times has he defended the belt now like 5 or 6. it would be a way bigger upset especially that wand is on the downhill side of his career, that was as high as serra will or would ever get wand was the fuckin man in pride for like 5 years but that was what 3 or 4 years ago. It would be a tremendous upset is and beat Spider.

heres what i have to say about wandy vs anderson no way will it be a boring fight win or lose wandy will make sure of that. silva only has a couple fights left for the ufc and he is gone don't waste them on guys that are not even really the number 2 guy, does anyone here think that leites was the #1 contender put silva in there with the right guys and we won't get this.i would rther see him fight franklin again than watch him fight another grappler.he should fight wandy, henderson 2,rampage,shogun maybe marquart 2, please only super fights for his last few.

I think Anderson in Pride vs Wandy in pride back in 01 would have been Wandy KOing Anderson easy. Wandy said he has already KO'd in the gym. Personally now though like I have said ufc isnt as much of a real fight as pride and that is not good for Wandy. Wand would for sure get raped by Anderson. I just dont know if Anderson could KO him. The only time Wand gets KO'd is by hooks. Or a crocop headkick when he is gassed and beat up. Anderson would overwhlem him though.

I think spider did what he could do in the Leites fight. Fans have to realize that these tough guys fight for a living and running in and attacking an guy like Leites for no reason other than to please fans could result in a knockout!!!

Spider was there to DEFEND his title, Leites was there to TAKE it, the onus was on Leites to step up and put on a show……..and if you dont agree with that…..maybee you should go fight anserdon silva…and go run in on a silly attack ans see what happens…….cut the spider some slack will ya all

I do agree that Anderson Silva needs a bigger challenge though. There are several good healthy guys at 205 that could fight in 3 months….Jardine, Vera, Griffin, Rua..any one of these fighters poses a serious threat to Silva if he is not at his best…..and any one of these fighters could fall just as easily……..o matter what…..these woudl be great matchups for the spider….his belt is not on the line..but he gets the chance to win nack the fans that think they coudl do a better job than he is……

  21. steve

    April 27, 2009 at 1:35 am

who the fuck said they could do better than anderson? I dont see jardine or vera having a chance against A. Silva and I disagree that it is the challengers fight to win. I think once you step in the cage and the bell rings. It dont matter who is the champ. I think they are both responsible for bringing it. The champ should prove he is the best. The challenger is suppose to show that he is the best.

Brandon Vera is fighting Matt Hamill and Forrest Griffin is fighting Thiago Silva in August, so count these two out for a fight with Anderson Silva in 3 months. If GSP wins against Thiago Alves at UFC 100 in July, then he would be the first choice to fight Anderson. Jardine would be a good option as well. The winner of the Dan Henderson vs. Michael Bisping is going to be a top option as well. If Machida fails to take the title from Rashad, then Anderson challenging Rashad is another option being considered.
