Anderson Silva vs Forrest Griffin In The Works For UFC 101

Thiago Silva was expected to take on Forrest Griffin in the co-main event at UFC 101. The UFC has apparently changed their mind, Anderson “The Spider” Silva is now in talks to face Forrest Griffin at UFC 101 on August 8 from the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia.

Sources close to the organization today told MMAjunkie a meeting was held last week to discuss the Anderson Silva vs. Griffin bout and that verbal agreements may now be in place.

The source isn’t sure if Thiago Silva will remain on the UFC 101 card with a new opponent or if he’ll be shifted to another event.

the fighter [Thiago Silva] was unaware his fight with Griffin had been scratched. Even as of this morning, the fighter was apparently under the impression he was still scheduled to fight Griffin at UFC 101.

Yahoo Sports confirms the rumor.

“Forrest loved the idea and said he’d do it right away, and Anderson told me he would fight anyone I wanted him to fight, no matter who it is,” White said. “So we got the deal.” – UFC President Dana White

“Silva, telling Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday that he had signed a deal for Silva to face ex-light heavyweight champion Forrest Griffin in the co-main event of UFC 101 in Philadelphia on Aug. 8.” – Anderson Silva

This should be good. Griffin likes to stand and throw, it will be interesting to see what his game plan is coming into this fight knowing that Silva is the far better skilled fighter. It looks as thought we will see a KO in this one..probably silva KO Griffin.

This is a definite suprise. Not the guy I would of [ut up against Anderson, but should be interesting none the less. I will say Griffin will not be affraid to intiate contact and should force Anderson to be more aggressive.

this is be a great fight.. BOth love to strike and if it does hit the matt anderson i think is a better JJ guy then forrest but i think forrest can wrestler better..

On the feet both of them use foot work and angles..i dont see forrest knocking out or subbing anderson but for sure Anderson better be coming to kill and dance around cause if the same anderson come out like i the last to fight it could go both ways but if anderson comes out like he has before then GOOd night forrest

that would be a sick card becasue BJ vs Kenny is the main event and Frrest vs Anderson what a badass card

    April 28, 2009 at 7:48 am

another thing that makes this interesting is that griffin is one of the biggest 205'ers out there. it will be interesting to see how he deals with someone bigger than him and dont say james irvin because he was bigger than irvin in the staredown and james is dropping to 185… Griffin could never make that weight.

finally anderson will be the little guy

i don't know. forrest has fought very strategic and conservative since losing to jardine. he changed his whole style after that loss. i hope i'm wrong but i think this will be another 5 rounder. 2 guys with big names waiting for the other guy to mess up. please spider, prove me wrong!!!!

i agree with what alot of you are saying, i think this is a good match up i would have preferred forrest vs thiago and anderson vs shogun or wandy but i won't complain about this and forrest is big for 205 and seems to upset people in his biggest fights but he can be knocked out and silva is precise with his could end up being boring but i think it is interesting.

Thank God! Now we can see Silva have an awesome fight that he'll have to take seriously again!

    April 28, 2009 at 11:02 am

i agree with roy 100 percent..

Also If silva wins and Rashed wins they will be fighting from what i am hearing from many places and if Rashed lose and GSP wins GSP will be fighting anderson SO hell yea…

    Kenny all the way baby

    April 28, 2009 at 11:05 am

i think rashad would fight rampage before he would fight anderson imo

If rashed loses i bet he will fight rampage but if he wins and silva wins theyw ill being and i will bet anything on it

T.R. this will only go 3 rounds at most. Its not a title fight. Also like a lot of you I think this could be very awesome fight and sounds good but… and this is a huge but. This could also turn out to be a very boring fight. Both of these guys have great technique and movement. I can see the fight going 3 rounds easy with little damage done but I can also see it being very exciting with both guys landing shots. Thruthfully I think Forrest can be very successful against A. Silva in the stand up. Like he did with Rashad and rampage. But if he gets caught which he very much can it can be over very quickly. Lets all just hope that the not scared to lose Anderson steps into the cage. And not the boring ass anderson that we have seen the past 2 fights.

  18. dane drebin

    April 28, 2009 at 11:12 am

then why did dana say rampage will fight the winner? rampage was suppose to be the number one contender but had to pull out because of his hadn and jaw. are u just assuming or do u have an actual source because i dont think ur right.

  19. dane drebin

    April 28, 2009 at 11:15 am

Anderson was timid with cote because cote has 1 punch knockout power and swings wild. He was timid with Thales because he didnt wanna get subbed. Forest as rampage put it cant bust a grape lol jk. But i dont think forest has the knockout power to make silve timid about engaging with him. Also how many forest fights have u seen that were boring?

  20. Oswald Gobblecock

    April 28, 2009 at 11:22 am

I wouldn't call what Anderson did with Cote "timid". lol

  21. Oswald Gobblecock

    April 28, 2009 at 11:24 am

Silva wasn't timid against better fighters with better KO power like Hendo, Franklin and Irvin. Don't think he was timid with Thales either… just bored and toying with them both.

I would have to say this has some more potential to be a fice round fight as well but i could be wrong. we will see. I think if it goes to decision we have seen forrest beat one champion that way already so spider may actually get hit in this one.

  23. T.R.

    April 28, 2009 at 1:46 pm

I totally overlooked the fact that this will be a non-title fight and only 3 rounds. Like i said tho, it's just an opinion that this fight could very well end up boreing. But I hope they both prove me wrong.

  24. tom

    April 28, 2009 at 2:13 pm

Forrest Vs Jackson was kinda boring and Forrest vs Hector was the bording fighht ever.. but Forrest alway seem to rise to the test. i dont think FOrrest casn win because he never wins by knock out so no power..i dont think Forrest can sub him and hendo couldnt Ground and pound silva so idk think forrest will do good there.. the only way silva can lose is by A desicon.

  25. tom

    April 28, 2009 at 2:16 pm

Kenny will beat bj in the 3 or 4 round watch..

Ken flo is a killer and has only lose in his ufc Caree was to sherk a long time ago"not couthing The lost to diego at 185 like 5 years ago doesnt count", i think ken is one of the best pound for pound becasue he has great sub and Mauy tie and always in shape..

  26. dane drebin

    April 28, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Forest vs Jackson was boring? LMAO it was a candidate for fight of the year. what are u smoking?

And why should kenny's loss to diego not count? Sanchez dominated him and choked him out and they are both in the same weight class still. ya it was a long time ago but a loss is a loss you just gotta move on and do better next time which i think a fight between him and sanchez would be very different than the first.

  27. yc

    April 28, 2009 at 2:42 pm

ok just to make sure Penn and Florian are still scheduled for ufc 101, or wouldnt it make more since on the 102 card cuz there really isnt a strong main event besides the couture. nog fight

  28. Kash

    April 28, 2009 at 3:34 pm

The first fight with Kenny Florian and Sanchez was a long time ago. The sport as evolving and they were definitely still evolving. Since then both of them have expanded their game and learned from new camps. If Kenny loses and Sanchez wins, I bet the UFC will make that fight happen.

tom: "Mauy Tie?" lol. learn to spell what you're acting like you're knowledgeable in

    April 28, 2009 at 8:49 pm

considering this is going to be only a 3 round fight i think it might go to decision..but anderson wins there will be all these rumours for silva fighting for the 205 title when this will never happen, silva has already said he wil never fight for the 205 title as he believes his good friend lytoto wil be holding it for a very long while

  31. STEVEO

    April 28, 2009 at 10:50 pm

ya this will be a 3 rounder i cant believe i didnt notice that but oh well i still think it has potential to go either way (boring or good that is).

  32. trent

    April 28, 2009 at 11:53 pm

Forrest is tough but i see him going in too fast and Anderson getting a KO in the first or second round. Problem for forrest is Anderson will be looking to prove he can still be exciting and i think Forrest is an ideal match for Anderson.

  33. T.R.

    April 29, 2009 at 1:57 am

i actually thought that forrest and rampage was a boreing fight also. There big names make it exciting but if it would have been 2 dudes on the undercard who fought the same fight to a split decision then we would have all been yawning with boredom.

There will be excitmenet during this fight because of their names alone but lets just hope they actually push each other.

  34. paul

    April 29, 2009 at 2:00 pm

if you where a forrest fan than you probally liked that fight, but if not it was pretty boring.

  35. dane drebin

    April 29, 2009 at 5:03 pm

i dont know how it was boring in any way it was a war. each won different rounds and it could have gone either way. Jackson scored a knock down and almost a big slam like he used to do. Firest put on a leg kick clinic that was sick to watch. Both men were going back and forth on the ground. I found it very exciting and it kept me on the edge of my seat all 25 minutes. MMA isnt just about planting ur feet and slugging it out like rockum sockum robots…

  36. steve

    April 29, 2009 at 7:03 pm

It had a couple good rounds but Rampage really didnt do much in a couple of the rounds and thats why he lost the fight. He should have pushed the pace a little more and of course checked the leg kicks lol.
