Audio: Dana White Responds To The AKA “Idiots” and Jon Fitch

UFC President Dana White responds to the UFC’s decision to release top five welterweight Jon Fitch on 1140 KHTK in Sacramento. White responds with a blanket hatred for the AKA training center managers. White gives no real answers, but suggests that the failing economy is having an affect on the UFC and its backers who run the Station Casinos.

“The economy is changing by the second. Every day when you wake up tomorrow, bad things are happening … Not just in the United States but all over the world. Television networks are in trouble. The sponsors who used to sponsor them are in trouble. Some of them are going out of business and the rest of them are cutting their sponsorships big time.

“Companies that have been around for hundred years are going out of business. It’s crazy. Banks are going under. And I’m in a situation now where I’ve got these guys, I’m trying to run a business, bro, I live on a plane 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That’s all I do is fly everywhere to try to build this company. And these guys think this thing is so big and these guys start negotiating all this stupid stuff like they’re Mel Gibson. No disrespect to Jon Fitch ,I like Jon Fitch ,(but) like we’re going to be doing the Jon Fitch swim line sometime soon? And then the clothing line.”

He makes a lot of good points but in the end he's just a greedy prick.

Fitch getting $169,000 for his fight with GSP is a pretty good payday.

Dana and his partners have all been made very wealthy by the B/S/T of the fighters, not just thier own 'hard' work!! Dana has managed to bait and trap fighters into the UFC by contracting enough fighters to corner the market and then to destroy the other organizations. Dana if you want to legitimize the sport stop contracting fighters to specific organizations. Unify fighters and titles worldwide. Until then the UFC is just your own little circus.

dana is just wrong. the econ is bad but that is no excuse to try to rip people off. dana claims that if fitch blew up somewhere else that would not benefit ufc but that's bs. if fitch had signed the in perpetuity/forever/slave contract and then went off and got big, dana white and the ufc would get paid off of him for the rest of their lives. dana does not tell the truth. business people are the most unethical people on earth. dana talks down to people to try to make them feel inferior. if i were AKA i would try to partner with someone, set-up an AKA league and start fighting. AKA sounds like a cool fight league brand. this reminds me of marvel comics in the 1980's. eventually their top artists left and made their own stuff. dana should realize that he owes the fighters as much as they owe him. its not a one way street. no fighters–no ufc. no ufc–no ufc fighters. you notice that no ufc==no ufc fighters. not just no fighters.

Hey I'm lorenzo fertita I made 130 Million dollars last year managnig station casinos but we cant afford to give you a few more thousand cause we are greedy cocksuckers. I love the ufc but its getting to the point that they are going to be their own worst enemy sending good fighters to other organizations, telling guys they cant wear a shirt to make some extra money while they walk to the ring, cmon this is getting ridiculous, the funny thing is that the fertitas and white are responsible for the pinnacle of mma that we now have and could also be responsible for the envitable down fall. Its not like boxing a fwe prodigys dont come along every couple years and resurrect a dying sport, Ufc forgets one thing without the fighters they are nothing.

Well said Steveo…..I think this is complete bullshit and Dana is fucking puke and I wish I could tell him that personally. He talks about people being idiots when he is the fucking idiot. I live on a plane 24hrs a day busting my ass…..what the fuck do you think fighters do dumbass. They bust there ass to put on good fights for your company. If you ask me any fighter that signs the deal is an idiot. Why in the hell would you sign a lifetime contract…..are you fucking stupid Dana. I love the UFC but fucking hate Dana White…….give your fighters some respect bro because you and the Fertittas didn't build this thing by yourself your fighters are the ones to thank for it.

Dana White is a joke. He has no business manners and manages his company like he is in the mob. I am astounded ESPN or any other company actually does business with him.

    November 20, 2008 at 5:48 am

it wasn't even for a few more dollars all fitch didn't want to do is sign a lifetime agreement giving them the rights to his name and image for games, he offered a 5-20 yr agreement and dana said its lifetime or goodbye.

  8. Tim

    November 20, 2008 at 6:12 am

In all fairness to the UFC their just protecting their image and their products…i mean how would you feel if Fitch left and then they started showing highlight reels of when he was in the UFC in some other promotion…they just the want the rights to his name so they can put him into video games, the image library and be protected so no one else can use his name or any other fighters name or the UFC image library. he just wants the licensing agreement to use his name etc.. although i do think that if Fitch isnt getting Royalities on this or compensation this is BS but Dana and his people with the help of the fighters have built the UFC and MMA not one party alone but if i had to say one i would say that Dana was the one…their is alot more to MMA than just fighting …Marketing, licensing, insurance both medical and legal, sponsorships, contracts etc… its not simple its a business all the fighters do is come in and train sign a contract and fight now nothing against the fighters as they are the bread an butter for the UFC but give credit to the UFC officers for where the business was in 97 to what it has become today a phenom in the MMA world and sports enterainment. Equally put though Dana needs to compensate his fighters if he wants a lifetime licensing on them.

  9. fedor24

    November 20, 2008 at 9:38 am

Lifetime licensing of fighters? Wow. Brett Farve leaves the Packers for the Jets and cannot be in Madden 2009? Oh yeah thats still the NFL brand. When you deal with the UFC you know that they put their brand first and the individual fighter second. Smart business in the current mma world. I think it is short sighted. Dana has done a great deal for the sport and a great deal to set it back. His vocabulary and antics do NOTHING to legitimize mma to the mainstream public in fact they reinforce the preconceptions held by many that mma seedy underground bloodsport run by arrogant thugs. Dana fits the mold to a tee. Dana is right when he says mma will grow big enough for everybody to get paid well. That will be when OTHER promotions force the UFC to do it. Dogging Fitch by saying he made 169K in one night. Where else could he do that? Well 2yrs to build his record and name, months of training, injury etc. Its not like the money these guys make is sustainable or consistent. One training injury and Fitch is out all his expenses. The more Dana speaks the less I respect him.

Tim I know business is about making money but come on man! The UFC had 2,945,000 ppv buys in the first seven months of 2008, at $45 per buy thats over $132 million in just ppv revenue. I know it cost a lot to produce a fight, promote it and televise on ppv but that cost is easily covered by the ppv revenue alone. Then think of how much they make on ticket sales. Have you priced tickets lately they are outrageously high, even for shitty seats. Then the money they make off of the reality show, thats gotta be a lot of dough there as it has been the big show to help Spike get to where they are. Then you start looking at all the "All Access" shows, "Countdown to…." shows and "UFC Unleashed", dude there is some major bank right there or spike wouldn't have it on all the damn time. Then there is all the marketing crap too, hats, shorts,T-shirts, DVDs(which are now the biggest sporting rental dvds on the market), the video games, posters, website marketing and all the shit Im not even thinking of right now. These guys are rolling in it. I feel so bad for Dana having to fly around the world in a badass corporate jet all the time, traveling the world going from casino to casino, from one high end hotel to the next. I spend my days busting my ass as a contractor traveling from one shitty jobsite to the next, I really feel for the dude.

When he started saying "shut up" and for the fighters to just focus on fighting and leave the business part up to him it totally reminded me of GW Bush after 9/11. "Just go shopping and go to work, let us handle these big issues". Dana is a perfect example of what is wrong with this country, GREEDY,GREEDY,GREEEDY! He should have been on Wall St. years ago. He would have made a killing and apparently those guys don't have to answer for shit that they've done. I will totally give him props for getting MMA out there to the mass public and shining a better light on the sport than the old days but even now the reality show promotes the alcohol and stupid antics and puts it on the air (not giving the sport or athletes a godd image) just because it draws in the mindless idiot viewers that think street brawling is cool. Unfortunately viewers equals dollars and that is of course what its all about for him. Im a long time fan(been watching UFC since my days in the Corps in the early 90s) and I would love to see someone step up with a more legit reality show and fight organization. Fitch didnt make $169,000 in one night. He trained for probably at least two months for that fight. Just like the UFC there are cost involved there, paying for gym access, trainers, conditioning coashes, doctors, specific dietary needs, supplements, etc. Headlining fighters should make at least 1 million a piece, look at what headlining boxers get. Dana just has the market corned right now and he wants to keep it that way. Just my 2 cents worth.

…just like that, huh? One day top notch contender-the next cut all together…HOW MUCH did Jon want that Dana just excised him like that?! Seems kinda like cutting off his nose to spite his face…Damn good fighter…maybe Dana's mad he didn't beat gsp?…that would be enough for me. :) hah!

Douche or not he still holds all the cards…w/e dudes. Maybe he's just keeping up the douche bag front to protect the image …you know, he goes soft with Fitch then everybody pulls the same thing…it will be just like free agancy in the NFL or NMA or MLB…."IF HE'S GETTIN PAID THIS, THEN I WANT THIS PLUS THIS…" and so on… we all see how it's ruined those sports mentioned. Hard to say…all I know is I gotta get to a class I'm taking so I can make enough to feed the fam…if I could beat up a guy and get 169 k for losing…I wouldn't bitch about it. L8r!

Great Post John You can Thank Dana and Forenzo and the rest of the UFC executives for everything you stated…fighters fight for a reason heart and money…and it takes alot to run and organization…have you ever wondered why the ufc has over 200 fighters under conttract throught the WEC and UFC and still stays afloat? its because they use the UFC and are making a living at marketing and offsetting low gross fights in either the WEC or UFC so that they can make up for with big fights also do you know how many employees besides fighters the UFC has ? at least 50 and theres salaries cost what ? Money so there in addition to your comments i think its worth adding this that running a business is a hell of alot harder than fighting for a living…at least in my eyes. Hell a fighter gets to train stay in shape, eat healthy and have fun kicking peoples ass and making money and being seen all over the world i know its hard shit dont get me wrong but not nearly as diffucult as running the UFC…their are alot of costs involved and yes the UFC is making money and lots of it but in what you stated the UFC made in just paperview 132M well out of that i would say covers like you said paperview and marketing for the fight, tv co promoters with networks etc…then you have live gate of so far i am estimating 50M which covers the leasing fee for using the property, emplyees wages etc…i dont know everything of course this is just an example but bottom line is Fighters are bad ass and its hard to run a business and Dana is just an ass frankly because he built the UFC from stracth with the help of his fighters etc..and he deserves respect but also needs to learn to respect his fighters etc… If what your saying is true welcome back Fitch it didnt take long. oh and John Semper Fi..

Jon Fitch is a greedy a$$hole, UFC gives him so much and he won't back up the UFC on a f cking video game for god sakes

he had to beg and cry to lorenzo to get his job back when he realized he was going to lose all the things the UFC was doing for him

I hope dana white black lists jon fitch for giving the ufc negative publicity

Dana. Immature. Imploding. Sounds like he's on coke. Power will be his downfall.

Cry to your mother, not your fans… its called business management. If you're going on radio talk shows and stomping your feet and calling people morons then you and your organization have problems.

There are a lot of fans that don't really respect leaving your family year-round when you could easily hire someone, with better communication skills, to do the stressful part…. business 101.

You talk in your public engagements like its a backroom, insider meeting… there's professionals to handle the press. Working behind the scenes would be a wise move.

Spend some time with your family and get a clue.

Dana White is our public figure the chairman of mma probably the most powerful man as far as crusading in the whole business. Being that guy means immediate criticism and exposure of flaws to a degree of exhausting proportions. The facts are A. None of us really know what was said in their conversation and what fine print is really in the contracts. B. People with such an extreme passion to make this thing work will come off in the manner in which he did to Jon Fitch and AKA. C. No matter how many bad moves and decisions Dana has made they are 1 for every two good ideas and good moves hes made look the UFC today then look even in summer of 2006 you will see a drastic improvement.D. His mouth leaves something to be desired but I am a fan of all sports if I want to hear Commisioners, Coaches and players be completely boring and HR appropriate ill watch espn for press conferences and post game interviews where they would have you believe that all those guys are role models. The reason he is the way is foul mouthed and shit talking is because its fighting its not golf its a business full of mean, manipulative assholes trying to make a buck and prove who has the bigger dick. Dana has to be the foul mouthed, double parking asshole that he is guys who arent like him don't make it in this business. I think its great that he does'nt hide behind a facade. Fighting is NC 17 its a sport only for adults He pretend like he is a nice calm good samaritan when the cameras are on He is the same Dana everywhere. You ever make a mistake like treating someone like shit and then you regret or don't this shit happens when humans deal with humans. i just don't think you can act like this is something that proves Dana is garbage. These things happen all the time with fighters but most of them don't spill all the beans about them to Not saying he isn't wrong just saying that there is an arguement to made the other way.

Fitch fell for the good cop bad cop routine…. now that's business 101.

Maybe some of you need to go back in time to 2001 when there were only 5 events the entire year. Quit bitching and enjoy all the fights you can see now because of the work the UFC put in. All these other organizations have just jumped on the bandwagon trying to make a dollar off what the UFC built. Until another MMA business model succeeds this is what works.

I hate that my boss makes hundreds of thousands of dollars sitting in his hummer sipping Mocha lattes while I bust my ass 60+ hours a week pouring concrete not even getting a lunch. Guess who's christmas bonuses got cut? Yes, the employees. While the owners made record profits this year and the management team still gets their bonuses. Shit rolls downhill. That is capitalism and that's the world we live in.

Also if you sign a contract don't bitch about how little you make. You signed it now be a man and live up to your word. I don't want to here about how much it costs to train and go to the gym that's on you when you decided to be a fighter. I don't get paid for driving to and from the job. I dont get paid for all the tools or work clothes I need to do my job.

  23. STEVEO

    November 21, 2008 at 1:46 am

Jake thats the problem though, he didnt sign the contract and got cut. I understand capitalism. Granted Dana and fertitas take the risk but at the same time they can share the wealth, how many ppv buys did the lesnar couture fight have, Ya couture and lesnar made 6 figures but how much did dana and lorenzo make, alot more than that for one night of sitting in a seat and walking around talking to people like a drunk college student. Like many have said before the more he talks the more dislike him, good business savy, poor business ethics, and NO CLASS WHAT SO EVER! I see Jeeremy Stevens all the time out in Des Moines, where we are both from, he gets fight of the night and gets a 60K bonus without that he gets paid what 6K to fight, thats BS.

  24. bleve

    November 21, 2008 at 3:16 am

Working behind the scenes doesn't mean being completely separated from the press, it just means taking on more of a manager/producer role rather than 'in-your-face promoter'.

The guy obviously sounds like he's about to have a breakdown… how good for business could that be. He's not being candid or just speaking his mind, listen to it again, he sounds like a burnout. There's many a tale about business men not being able to step back or let go a little and then the whole organization suffers.

Dana should definitely be respected for the work he has put in for the sport… but that's not what we're talking about here.

He's imitating people's voices like a middle-schooler… wtf? He's walking a very fine line between being edgy and being a tabloid joke.

I love MMA, not just the ufc… fans owe them no loyalty if they are constantly bombarded with out of the ring theatrics.

Dana and the UFC aren't untouchable… there will be someone smart and principled who will rise up and snatch away a ton of fighters, mark my word.

And on another note… this reporter is completely on his d&*$, even after being disrespected. Do people really think his video blogs are cool? As interesting as knowing what he ate and what time he goes to bed are…

    November 21, 2008 at 11:29 pm

STEVEO – If you think "but how much did dana and lorenzo make, alot more than that for one night of sitting in a seat and walking around talking to people like a drunk college student" You either have no absolutely no idea or more than likely is that you grossly overstated something to make your point.

How many shows were there this year? 19 events and 5 of them were in a different country. How many days to rent an arena, get the arena set-up, make sure the posters are distributed, do a press tour which is promotions for the event and to line up all the sponsors? That doesn't sound like 1 day of work to me.

Do you know how many people are involved with just lighting a show? Over 20 .. do you think those people work for free? What about the sound …how many people to coordinate that? When you rent an arena they don't throw in free concessions. The event has to pay for them and the employees to run these concessions. It isn't a package deal where you rent and then you get everything thrown in for free.

Now to the pay per view … Who pays for the cameras and the labor it costs to run them? What about the ringside doctors, the ambulance on duty, the cutmen, the judges and the security staff? What about setting up feeds that can get the highlights to ESPN the same night?

The truth is that there are too many "other" expenses than just fighter payout to list.

If your "friend" Jeremy Stephens didn't think that a 6 thousand dollar payday was enough he shouldn't have signed the contract. You said you understand capitalism so point me to a company that makes millions and pays their people at the bottom a lot…. I'll be waiting because i want to work there.

You also said the problem was Fitch didn't sign the contract and got cut. He did sign it. In his contract there is a clause that says he could be released after a loss. Just like most everybody elses contract. Don't sign if you don't like it. Bitching afterwards makes you the bitch.

  26. STEVEO

    November 22, 2008 at 4:44 am

For starters I didnt say Stephens was my friend, I have met him in passing in Des Moines, as a fan of MMA I introduced myself and bought the guy a beer. However my friend Chris Mickle did hand him a loss and you can look that up if you like. I know all about signing a contract I have done it twice now for the US ARMY. Im not saying I dont get how capitalism works and I m not trying to start an argument I am just saying that I find it hard to believe a few guys like dana and the fertitas who actually have little to do other than being figure heads of a company cant afford to pay fighters and seemingly go out of their way to try and let these guys make as little money as possible while they make more money than most people make in a lifetime in ONE YEAR. I like many other people am tired of listening to Danas mouth he talked all kinds of shit about Jon Fitch and I would like to see that arm chair tough guy get in fitchs face and say it to him like a man, oh wait he wont just like tito he will hide behind the microphone and his position like a punk running his mouth. Dana promotes himself more than he promotes the UFC. Look at the other link on here, him getting his picture taken with a belt, cmon.
