Bas Rutten: Kimbo Fight Should Have Been Stopped In R2

Kimbo Slice’s trainer legendary mixed martial arts veteran Bas Rutten, on his website, defends his fighters performance on last Saturdays EliteXC “Primetime”. Rutten also stated that rules are rules and the fight should have been stopped in the second round. Here’s the clip:

People ask me if the fight should have been stopped at the end in the second round, I say YES because those are the rules, it should have been stopped because Kimbo didn’t do anything to improve his situation. But I think what made the ref NOT do it was the fact that Kimbo was giving his thumbs up the whole time to let the referee know that he was OK.
This was the refs decision, not Kimbo’s.

Rutten defends his fighters performance while explaining his mistakes:

Did he make mistakes? Of course, but than again, everybody makes mistakes plus he’s training MMA for only a year. I think that he had a few really good escapes from the bottom. Of course I wanted him to buck up, explode and escape the last one and a half minute of round number two, but he didn’t.
He DID give his “thumbs up” sign to the referee telling him he was OK and that the short elbows didn’t hurt him. Still, he should have escaped but he told me later that he was saving energy for the third round and because he thought the elbows didn’t have any effect anyway, he chose that moment.
I told him that it wasn’t good to do because the ref can stop the fight PLUS what if you get cut? So that won’t happen again.

He also didn’t close his guard a few times and he should have done that. In round two he had James in a guillotine choke but didn’t close his guard, that was too bad because Thompson escaped exactly how I showed Kimbo that you should escape when your opponent doesn’t close his guard, but you learn from your mistakes so that won’t happen again either.

See even his own trainer said he should of lost that fight? What a freaking joke, Elite XC is so babying him its ridiculious, i bet you the fight was fixed with out thompson knowing, they screwed him over.

Kimbo was saved by the bell if not for that i dont believe Kimbo was going to get out of that situation.

Bas said what most MMA fans would say to. I think the rules would have given Thompson the win easily Kimbo wasn't defending its that simple. Bas wasn't the only one the post fight interviews kimbo tried to stand-up to Brett Rogers who said that he saw kimbo tap.

James was in better shape and didnt gas when ontop it would have been over …. i could have hit him harder than he did … did like seeing Kimbo being dominated like that.. i said it before … just take kimbo deep into the rounds and he wont last just like Sean Gannon did…i didnt like the intros either.. too wwe like… over all i gave the night a c minus

Yeah Kimbo disappointed the hell out of me. I almost thought it was a fix because Thompson was giving him love taps. I wouldn't have stopped the fight either if I was a ref. The guy wasnt giving any damage.

Hard or not thats not for the ref to call. Kimbo was crucifixed and wasn't doing anything. There were a ton of unblocked punches and elbows being rained down. I think in the mind of all of us Kimbo lost. So the question is will he be a better figher next time.

These big fights are obviously fixed. EliteXC will make WAY more money in future if Kimbo wins and much less if he loses. Thompson was in on it and you could tell by his little baby punches and elbows when he had Kimbo locked down. MMA is a joke as long as the fighters are paid via contract and not prize money and as long as people can bet leggaly on the outcome. Thompson would for sure take his prize money knowing he has to lose because it is his only chance to ever make that money.

I know that the fight was fixed. If you watch all the fights from the UFC, the ref would have stopped the fight in the second round. Who cares if your finger is raised to signal that you are ok. If you are not blocking the punches and both of your hand are pinned down. Then the ref should have stopped the fight. I understand that his ear popped but the guy was on his feet defending his self. If Kimbo fought a real fighter such as TITO or THE ICE MAN from the UFC he would not wonthe fight and would gas out by the second round.

ref did the right thing man. its thompsons fault he didn't have the agression when it mattered. he had kimbo where he wanted him, like a mortal kombat fatality, and didnt pull the trigger. those elbows were soft.

in the third, kimbo may have hurt thompson but the ref stopped it too early. someone should have been face down on the canvas before the bell rang. thompson was on his feet and should have been given a chance. if it wasnt fixed…it was influenced. no doubt about it.

the fight should have been stoped in the seond when he was taking those elbows. its the rules like it or not if ur not defending intelligently the fight should be over and kimbo had no answer. look at penn/hughes II… hughes won the fight having penn in the crucifix position hitting him with unanswered blows and bj didnt look like the blows were affecting him at all. its the way it goes and he didnt complain about the stopage.

Why are there ANY referee stoppages? Fighter safety. That is the ONLY reason. Deciding who is getting points or who is dominating is up to the judges outside the ring. If a fighter is not in trouble, the fight doesn't stop. So what if a fighter is on his back and can't do anything. It isn't freestyle wrestling. The end of round 2 was closer to "stand up" than "stoppage". It is up to the fighter on top to do something from that position. Had it been stopped there, it would have been a travesty and truly the beginning of the end for MMA. A fight stopped with no submission, no damage. What would the casual observer of MMA think at that point? That it is closer to WWE theater than combat sport.

Thompson's eyes couldn't both fix on the same subject when it was stopped. I don't have to take the ref's word on that because I could see it on my TV (love HD). He hit the ref, thinking it was his opponent. He went to the hospital after the press conference. How good would that be to have a serious head injury result from the first primetime network broadcast of a controversial sport? Plenty of fights, both boxing and MMA have been stopped with the loser still on his feet. And rightfully so. Again, fighter safety.

Fi8ghter safety my Ass, that fight was rigged by the Refs, rules are rules and it doesnt matter how much damage your doing, if you are taking uncontested shots for a period of a few minutes, the fight is over plain and simple, had it not been for the bell, Kimbo would have never made it past the second round.

  16. Thomas

    June 4, 2008 at 12:50 am

Pussy rules. Seriously, why stop a fight with zero damage happening? Kimbo didn't have a mark on him. Not a damn mark. What if Thompson didn't have a free elbow. What if he was doing shoulder strikes for 60 seconds? Stop the fight then if nothing is happening? The rules say nothing about how many shots or how long they go on, because it IS about damage. It IS a ref judgement and it IS about protecting athletes. Not about making some Kimbo hater happy.

We can see that you like Kimbo, which means you do not know MMA or are a true fan of it since you even give that load of shit so called MMA fighter credit. Kimbo is a nobody and put him in with any legitimate fighter anywhere and especially in the UFC and he would be beat the F up and demolished to were he would not want to fight again. Hell even Anderson Silva would knock him the Fuck out. Brock Lesnar would toy with him. Kimbo doesnt deserve to be associated with the word MMA fighter, he is a disgrace to this sport and he should go back to the streets of the Bums.

I dont care what you say, your entitled to freely express yourself thank God for America and for ther troops fighting for our freedom, PS i am a former Marine and a current National guard member. But with all do respect man anyone that thinks Kimbo is great at MMA is down right stupid.

i agree with thomas when he says that refs shouldnt stop a fight if the dominant fighter isnt inflicting any damage. unfortunately thats not always the case but i'm glad that it wasnt stopped then.

maybe what the ref should have known is that thompson is a little cock eyed. he wasn't that far gone when they stopped the fight although he had to be hurt. i think the ref stopped it because the network made it clear that they didnt want any overly gruesome or bloody fights being continued. thats the price you pay for network tv…early stoppages.

it was a fun fight .. really … wasnt it ? come on admit it you all liked it or liked to hate it..there is no way that fight could have gone any other why … just look at all the entries above 22 or so .. now thats funny

Referee stoppage is a double edge sword anyways, but if you wanna keep watching these fights they have to have it. And down with Kimbo.

  25. ryan

    June 4, 2008 at 1:52 pm

well first off i thought for sure that the fight was gonna be stopped after the first barrage of un-answered elbows and hammerfists' but then it went on for another 1:00 and that shit was just rediculous, he should have stopped it then, but he didn't, and to kimbos credit, he would have put thompson to sleep if that 3rd round went any longer.

All of you with your trash talk towards kimbo swear that you could do any better like you are all pros. I think Kimbo did a great job in there all things considering and we all know he is not a strong ground fighter but he ruled standing up those punches were fierce but time will tell if he's got what it takes.

  27. ryan

    June 4, 2008 at 2:36 pm

i agree with you ramond, in street fighting there isnt much ground'n'pound and this is kimbos 3rd fight in the mma, people should we be giving him a little more slack than what they are, i'd say if he stays in the buisness for 3-4 more years he will be unbeatable. but the other night he just didnt look too great, i personally thought that he was going to kick the crap out of JT because i was a big kimbo fan, i still got my loyalty for him though, the dude is badass.

  28. Tim

    June 5, 2008 at 12:18 am

Unbeatable??? now one is unbeatable and for surely Kimbo will always be beat by tougher competion put him in there with lets say big NOG he will tearKimbo apart and submit his ass, any legitamate MMA fighter could beat Kimbo even Anderson Silva. Lesnar would have his way with Kimbo and toss him around like a piece of meat and then slice it up and finish him hands down. Kimbo is to damn old and is not in serious conditiong to even be thinking about pursuing MMA, the man must stop smoking and get his heart conditioned.

    June 10, 2008 at 6:56 pm

I see we have some haters posting. regardless of when you all think the ref should have stopped the fight or if Thompson was not throwing stronger punches. He lost and Kimbo won, and the UFC backed that decision. so unless you'll are welling to put in a mouth piece and jump in the cage and fight one of these guys I would shut the **ck up.

  30. GirlyGirl

    June 10, 2008 at 9:29 pm

UFC backed that decision, huh?….. wow, and here I thought the show was being run by Elite XC. But it appears that YOU are the authority, so ok, I'll take your word for it.

Well joeblack, you pretty much just iced the fact that you have no idea what your talking about.
