Boxing: Tim Sylvia vs. Ray Mercer

Tim Sylvia

Tim Sylvia

Rumors of former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia (0-0 Boxing) fighting boxing veteran Ray Mercer (36-7-1 Boxing) are actually true, partially. Both fighter are scheduled to lock “boxing” gloves at Adrenaline’s 3 on May 30 from the Trump Taj Mahal Casino Resort in Atlantic City, NJ, according to Adrenaline MMA CEO Monte Cox.

“I was doing Tim Sylvia against Ray Mercer as a headliner … First I was doing it in MMA. We changed and thought it would be a lot more interesting in boxing.”

“In boxing, who knows who is going to win … Mercer just beat a guy who is 30-2. He was ranked fifth in Europe and Mercer just beat him.”

“You just have no idea who is going to win … I don’t care if he’s 47 (years old). He’s been boxing his whole life, won an Olympic gold medal, went to split decision with Lennox Lewis. Believe me, he’s going to hit hard. Tim’s going to have a hard time.”

This rediculace matchup has even HDNet opting to not broadcast this event.

“It won’t be on HDNet,” Cox said. “I still have a deal left. But (HDNet Fights CEO) Andrew Simon decided that he didn’t want to do that show.”

“I’ve got another group that put together a deal with me where it would be available in 55 million homes and another one that’s up to 70 million homes … I’ll do one of those two.”

its actually is alot better as a boxing match, mercer is old but he is a pro boxer so i give him a good chance the only thing that will lose this fight for him is his age in his prime tim would never beat him in a boxing match.

Well, this doesn't give boxing any credibility! Letting an MMA fighter who can't win a fight against someone 1/4 his size in a boxing ring? Is Tim trying to win the record for "Most beatings from guys who are over 40"? He'll be challenging Muhammed Ali next, I guess…and loose. Or is he trying to race Shamrock to the finish of the "retire from MMA in shame" contest?

i like the Idea because Its a boxing match not a mma fight..if it was a MMA figh Tim would kill him but its just boxing and that sounds good??

I think this is silly and does MMA a disservice more than anything else. A recent MMA heavyweight CHAMP is going to fight a senior citizen in boxing??? and probably lose??? This might be worse than Kimbo.

It just goes to show that the hands of pro-boxers are in a whole other universe than those of pro MMA guys. There's not a single weight division in which any MMA guy could also be a pro boxer. Ray Mercer couldn't box legitimately in any major boxing organization and he will probably mop Sylvia up. The only thing worse for Tim Sylvia's image is the fact that he's sitting on that dumb ass motor scooter…

It will be interesting, but I definately don't think he has to speed or conditioning to keep up with an experienced pro boxer with a good record.

Fedor must have squeezed something loose. What is Tim thinking. Forget that, what is Mercer thinking? Before the Kimbo fight I remember Mercer being a respectable boxer, not some choked out chump.

    This fight is a joke!

Mercer at 50 in a boxing match coming off a win against a guy who's never boxed before? Hum…How did the NJ State Athletic Control Board sanction this? Unless it is going to be an exhibition. If it is a real boxing match and over 6 rounds, well Tim's going to learn a few "hard knock" lessons.

Case in point. I was a highly skilled kickboxer who sparred some of the best boxers of that era to hone my "hands".

When Kenny "Bang Bang" Bogner was a legitimate contender I went to war with him, in the gym.

Charles Boston, and in more recent times outstanding Super Middleweight contender Bryant Brannon.

I was asked to fight a guy who boxed in prison and was their "champ" in a 6 round boxer vs. kickboxer bout.

Hey, I was going 8-10 rounds HARD sparring in the gym with these boxing contenders.

    I was schooled, brother.

Deciding not to kick figuring all my gym boxing experience was enough, I was schooled.

I held my own but was beaten and outclassed.

Unless Tim lands one of his "arm" punched and Ray's jaw has turned into an egg shell. Its Mercer by UD or late round stoppage.
