The California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has denied a license to Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighter Josh Barnett after Barnett tested positive for a banned substance.

Barnett’s June 25 drug test came back positive for 2a-methyl-5a-androstan-3a-ol-17-one, an anabolic steroid. CSAC learned of the results July 21 and immediately denied a license for Barnett. CSAC also informed the promoter of Barnett’s August 1 bout against Fedor Emelianenko that the bout would not be approved.

“The license of Josh Barnett was denied pursuant to rule 303 of Title IV of the California Code of Regulations,” said CSAC Interim Executive Officer Dave Thornton. “That rule prohibits the use of certain substances, including anabolic agents, by any boxer or MMA fighter.”

Barnett’s test was observed in the presence of a CSAC representative and the sample was sent to the World Anti-doping Agency test facility at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) on June 25 for processing. CSAC was notified of the results yesterday.

Barnett has the right to appeal the denial of his license.

“Our primary concern is for the health and safety of fighters,” said Thornton. “Anabolic agents and other banned substances put the users of those agents at risk, as well as their opponents. The commission simply will not tolerate their use.”

CSAC has among the toughest drug testing standards of any Athletic Commission in the country.

it baffles me why any fighter that has a chance to beat fedor would ruin it by trying to cheat, not saying he raly had a chance but why not just train hard and give your best if u loose theres no shame and if u win u have done something that no one else has… well appart from that doc stopage but it just dont make sense, there are hundreds of fighters who would love a shot at fedor and he got one and fuked hisself.

dose anyone know if there will be a stand in, i know people r saying belfort but i dont think that will happen.

Yes, sy. Vitor has agreed in principle to replace Barnett and fight Fedor at Affliction:Trilogy…

A fight between Fedor and Belfort has not yet been proposed to the CSAC…

give barnett a break. if you knew you fate was to be doomed by fedor, you know you would be juicing too.

it's interesting how the test came back positive before the fight. think about the ufc. all of the steroid tests that came back positive in the ufc… came back AFTER the fight.

I knew they tested them after the fight, but I really didn't know they tested them before the fight…I think it's probably better they do that. If they did that they could have caught Barnett cheating before he fought Randy back in the day…

They test before so that they can see if the fighter was using in training, and then after to see if the fighter used PED's for an edge at the fight for stamina or something to that degree. It's funny, last week I was telling a friend that it would be funny if Barnett got busted for drugs again, and low and behold, wham. It doesn't surprise me since he's been brought up on these before, and never actually lost the UFC Heavyweight Title, rather had it stripped. Last I've seen, Belfort was not signed on. There has also been some talk of Bobby Lashley stepping in. I'd prefer that fight, because after Fedor crushed him then all the talk of these huge wrestling juicers AKA Brock Lesnar would have to shut up.

Who cares…..Brock would kill them both

yeah brock needs to clean out the ufc before he even deserves to be mentioned with fedor.

fedor technically is undefeated. his only loss was due to a cut in the 1st 30 seconds of a fight.

  12. fedor is gay

    July 22, 2009 at 10:27 am

A loss is a loss so suck it, Fedor is NOT undefeated. Quit sucking his nuts so much…

What a moron. No wonder he talked so much shit in his interviews. That pretty much screws up all of Affliction 3. I hope the UFC paid him for this.

CYRYUS lashley getting beat by fedor wouldnt do anything to lesnars legitimacy. lashley is way smaller than brock and has way short arms compared to brock. brock wouldnt have trouble getting a takedown on guida and he wouldnt go to a decision either.

a lot of long time mma fans have wanted to see this fight. i don't know how they can find any replacement to take barnet's place. maybe tito. i don't think vitor belfort would get the same draw as tito would.

  16. Joey

    July 22, 2009 at 12:09 pm

F that. Tito will get killed by Fedor.

Joey, the UFC kicked him out for the same shit. Barnett is clearly a loser and a cheat, and shouldn't be in ANY league. Screw that guy.

please do not replace with ricco rodriquez, mark kerr, or even brett rogers. frankly, i think brett rogers is one dimensional. he's basically a more technically sound, taller version of kimbo. maybe AA should be given another shot at fedor. he was winning that 1st round before getting flattened. vitor belfort is now a 185er. he probably will come to fight at 200 pounds… still a significant weight gap from fedor's 230. and please no matt lindland. i can't stand the guy. plus, fedor beat him pretty convincingly.

  20. Mike

    July 22, 2009 at 1:02 pm

    errrr 200-230 is 30 lbs…

Randy vs Brock….. 50 lbs weight difference.

WHAT IS BARNETT THINKING OR ANY OTHER FIGHTER THAT TAKES ROIDS WHILE PREPARING TO FIGHT?????

SURELY HE WANTED TO FIGHT FEDOR AND NOT DODGE…I DON'T KNOW?????

  22. Mike

    July 22, 2009 at 1:45 pm

well Barnett and Fedor are Friends…. Barnett could be trying to dodge him.

  23. Todd

    July 22, 2009 at 1:50 pm

THATS BULLSHIT, BARNETT SHOULD WANT TO BEAT ONE OF THE BEST FIGHTERS IN THE WORLD, FRIENDS OR NOT….

  24. Jay

    July 22, 2009 at 2:08 pm

well if Vitor were to fight fedor, than who would fight Santiago??

  25. zack

    July 22, 2009 at 2:12 pm

It'll be somebody easier than Vitor, he should be happy Vitor might fight Fedor because he gets an easier opponent..

  26. Cobra Clutch

    July 22, 2009 at 8:38 pm

Yeah, Barnett purposely besmirched his name and reputation just so he could dodge his friend Fedor. GTFO, seriously…that could be the stupidest idea posted on this site of stupid posts. lol. Barnett is a habitual roider…he was stripped of his UFC belt and kicked out for it, and that had nothing to do with dodging buddies. He's a scum bag and shouldn't be allowed in any organization. Cheating bastard.

  27. Mike

    July 22, 2009 at 8:41 pm

they SHOULD be allowed to use roids…. that way its "fair"

look at Brock…. we all KNOW he has taken Roids pre ufc… how the hell is that fair on those who haven't?

  28. steve

    July 22, 2009 at 9:07 pm

mike stop crying. We have heard this. Yes Lesnar has taken steroids and he does win by just being too big for the opponent. The real problem is the HW weight gap. 207-265. LOL that a little extreme. A new weight class at 220 and 230 would be great. Somewhere around there. But I doubt this will ever happen.

  29. Mike

    July 22, 2009 at 9:55 pm

crying? I'm simply stating… how is it fair that one can do it to pump up then stop?

i agree with the weight thing… i suggested it sometime ago… most agreed it was a good idea.

235lbs seems the best weight as its slap bang in the middle.

  30. STEVEO

    July 22, 2009 at 10:25 pm

I am not really sure what barnett is taking roids for, he looks more like tim sylvia than he does lesnar or lashley, looks more comfortable picking up acase of brews not a fighter

look at my old post and I callrd this when he first find out about this fight, I said it would happend because josh is a pussy rioder and I have been saying that for year..onces a cheater always a cheater

  32. sy

    July 23, 2009 at 1:19 am

defo agree with the comments about a new weight class around 235 but the guy who did best against brock was randy and what was he about 228 so who knows plus most of the hwts that are over 235-240 are fat an slow

  33. Cobra Clutch

    July 23, 2009 at 1:31 am

There's nobody to fight Brock right now, and you guys want to split an already-thin weight class. That's hilarious. Like there'll ever be a significant weight class of super heavyweights in MMA.

    July 23, 2009 at 1:39 am

we can't say there's nobody to fight Brock…we haven't seen him against any real "dangerous fighters". Even in the first fight with Mir, Brock was owning him before his rookie move. A younger Randy may have had a better chance, but not the post 2 Liddel KO's version he fought. AFTER Kongo and Cain or Shane Carwin…then we can start saying Nobody

  35. roy

    July 23, 2009 at 1:44 am

vitor is at 205 right now, fight night he will be 210-215 fedor will be 225-230 not that big a difference.i would rather see him fight rogers though because to many haters will start crying he is fight a mw.

  36. Mike

    July 23, 2009 at 1:53 am

Cobra… i don't know what Sport you're watching but its not MMA.

eventually it'll be as popular (if not more) than boxing…. and that right now has so many weights its not funny.

    like i've said before.

    Carwin

    Lesnar

    Velaquez

    Mir

    Nog

    Kongo

so many top super heavyweights that can fight out for that belt, then you have people who due to size won't be able to compete for the belt.

    Randy.

    Cro Cop

    Dos Santos

then you're looking at fighters who have dropped to 205lbs because of it (and are going to get beat)

    Vera

    Coleman

i can guarantee that they'll be more soon.

  37. MW74

    July 23, 2009 at 2:02 am

awesome evidence posting Mike. I agree AND TUF 10 with MORE big heavyweights is about to inject (pun intended) even more talent. True too, about guys not big enough…like Franklin and Wandi who fight in LHW seperate division might not be the worst idea. and, Mike..if you go by the ppv #'s and marketing….MMA has ALREADY surpassed boxing…by the millions of $$$$!

  38. Cobra Clutch

    July 23, 2009 at 4:32 am

So, basically, Mike, you're suggesting to make the Heavyweight division a Super Heavyweight division consisting of Carwin, Lesnar, Velasquez, Mir, Nog, and Kongo, and then have a Heavyweight division consisting only of Couture, Cro Cop, and Dos Santos. And you guys are looking forward to the TUF10 group of ex-football players, an aging ex champ, and an internet over-hyped sensation to be the future of the UFC HW division?

    Yeah….that'll happen.

  39. TTL

    July 23, 2009 at 11:10 am

Hell yeah I say split the HW division. Do you really think Brock would beat Couture or Mir if he was their size? Hell no. Damn I mean all of the weight classes that are split by 15 lbs. make a huge deal about size, at the same time the HW division spans 60 lbs!

    July 23, 2009 at 2:14 pm

Cobra what i am saying is soon theyll be so much MMA Talent Dana won't be able to juggle it all anymore, hell he'll have to refuse people entery to the UFC because he can't fit them on his rotation. (doesn't he have over 300 already?!)

with the popularity of MMA now a days you'll have so many MMA fighters who can't compete in heavyweight because of guys like Carwin and Lesnar (too big).

MMA passes boxing money made so expect money and money good fighters to come.

i mean really how on earth do you expect to beat someone like Brock who is just going to Wrestle you to the ground and lay on you so you can't get him off if you weight 220lbs with no wrestle background?
