According to Bob Carson on the MMA radio show Carson’s Corner, famed street fighter Kimbo Slice will take on PRIDE veteran James Thompson in the main event, at the debut EliteXC show “Saturday Night Fights” on CBS, May 31 from the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ.

James “The Colossus” Thompson (14-8-0) is coming off two strait losses, the latest at EliteXC: Street Certified by first round knockout from Brett Rogers.

Thompson has not submitted someone in over five years, which should make a good opponent for the inexperienced Kimbo Slice.

Wonderful. Two wins in his last eight fights. That is very impressive for the debut of MMA on network TV.

  2. roy

    April 2, 2008 at 2:05 am

well it is a step up, i think its a good match up for kimbo thompson comes right at you and either knocks you out or gets knocked out.kimbo should be fast enough to avoid his big punches and land his own thompson has a weak chin but i heard he is training bjj for this fight.

  3. kom34

    April 2, 2008 at 3:16 am

james "glass jaw" thompson is going to make a good highlight KO for Kimbo.

  4. Thomas

    April 2, 2008 at 3:49 am

The highlight film will be exactly the same length as the full fight.

  5. Morey

    April 2, 2008 at 4:05 am

I agree with that Thomas. They had to include the staredown in Thompsons fight with Alexander Emelianenko because the KO came in just 11 seconds.

  6. Matt D.

    April 2, 2008 at 4:23 am

James Thompson may be average, but he is a small step up. Plus I always enjoy watching Thompson get knocked out. His match against Aleksander has to be one of my favorite under 30 second fights ever.

    April 2, 2008 at 5:35 am

Isn't James Thompson the first guy you had to fight on Mike Tysons Punch Out? Cmon stop feeding him jobbers and put him in there with someone legit.

  8. tom

    April 3, 2008 at 2:46 am

kimbo is going to win cause thompson has a glass chin..but yeah thompson is a step up so i cant really bitch

  9. Thomas

    April 3, 2008 at 3:42 am

Eh, 2-6 (Thompson) versus 1-7 (Abbott) in recent history. That's a pretty small step. Why couldn't they put him up against Cabbage who at least has a stone jaw, or against Bigfoot who has an impressive record and a freak-show size that would play well with the casual fan.

  10. RIC

    April 3, 2008 at 5:11 am

Wow, Could you please give Kimbo slice somebody who knows how to fight? Isnt MMA is about fighting the best? if your just gonna sit their and put some dude who COULD NOT FIGHT ANYBODY WHO KNOWS ANYTHING ABOUT BJJ, against people who knows how to be a human hightlight reel for other fighters. Somebody tell me when Kimbo is gonna fight somebody Legit, he's in the Pro Game so give him pros not washed up retards like tank abbot or the guy who hasnt submitted somebody his entire career and is 2-8 his last 10 fights. Whose next Ken Shamrock? Please god tell me when he fights somebody who isnt at the end of their careers.

  11. Nah

    April 7, 2008 at 1:13 pm

    lets see kimbo fight rampage

  12. Thomas

    April 7, 2008 at 11:05 pm

I'd pay to see Kimbo vs. Rampage.

  13. Scott

    April 9, 2008 at 11:21 pm

i keep hearing people say why dosen't kimbo fight rampage i'l tell you why kimbo is a heavyweight rampage weighs 189. he would die and kimbo would be left in the middle of the ring with rampage's head in his hands

  14. Nicks

    April 9, 2008 at 11:30 pm

Rampage would dismantle Kimbo. Rampage closes distance and body slams kimbo. If kimbo survived he gets mounted and pounded out.

I would even put Rampage stand-up against Kimbo its a no contest Rampage KO Kimbo anyday of the week.

Until Kimbo starts beating guys who can fight I don't understand why hes so hyped.

  15. Thomas

    April 10, 2008 at 12:26 am

Everybody "knows" Kimbo has no ground game. How? Just because he has been able to fight his type of fight so far. He has been training with a Hall of Famer, King of Pancrase – I guarantee he is not clueless about submissions. He might never win by a submission, but he probably will lose by about as many submissions as Liddell.

  16. STEVEO

    April 10, 2008 at 1:20 am

Scott, if rampage weighs 189 pounds I will slam my nuts in a car door. ARE YOU KIDDING ME. He fights light heavyweight which means he weighs in at 205 which means more than likely two weeks before a fight he weights 220-230 walking around. SO Kimbo is big but as I have said before in many posts as soon as kinbo gets in the ring with a guy that isnt just scared of him we will see what hes got, the two jobbers he fought before Tank, also a jobber, tapped out to strikes, ARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS, tapped out to strikes, they must have been great fighters. And dont get me started on Tank "I havent won a fight in ten years but they keep letting me cash checks abbott. He looked more like a sumo wrestler in his last fight than a cage fighter. ALL MYSELF AND EVERY OTHER DOUBTER ARE SAYING, I WILL GIVE HIM PROPS AS A LEGIT FIGHTER WHEN HE STOPS GETTING IN THE RING WITH GUYS THAT SHOULD BE SETTING IT UP NOT FIGHTING IN IT.

  17. erik

    April 10, 2008 at 1:35 am

why does everyone say "oh they couldnt beat rampage, or you cant beat GSP, or BJ, or Noguiera? Just because they are the UFC champion it doesnt mean they're the best in the world….let each one of them bump up or down in weight and we'd see how they would do then….Randy Couture is a true champion, he held belts 3 diffrent times in 2 diffrent weight classes…the only other person right now that is a champ that has even held a belt in 2 diffrent divisions is BJ…all im sayin is just because someone has gold around the waist it doesnt mean that they're automatically the shit

  18. Rell

    May 21, 2008 at 9:17 am

UFC/MMA will keep putting Kimbo in with the little guys and racking up the cash. They have this thing called a business model. You think they would immediately put him in with someone who knows how to fight? What if he lost? Kimbo has been the best thing to happen to MMA (revenue wise) in forever!!! They gotta ride that rollercoaster for as long as they can, baby!!!

  19. dave

    May 27, 2008 at 2:03 am

I like both fighters chances in this 1. i personally have been a James Thompson fan for a long tine. when he's on, look out. he seems to be working on his ground game and that is good but that also means his head is in position for a knee and that has been happening more lately. Kimbo has yet to feel the hard punch of someone like Thompson. it should be good to watch.

  20. Tim

    May 27, 2008 at 2:52 am

Unfortunetly this world does not revolve around skills as a fighter, its alll about the money…money money money. Sad but very true.

  21. raidertrojan

    May 27, 2008 at 1:22 pm

Look, it's not rocket science, Kimbo is in his third MMA fight ever (4th if you count Ray Mercer), so his trainers are in no rush to put him in against top 10 fighters. But this is NORMAL. Trainers want their fighters to progress and give them better fights as they become ready for them. Kimbo got a lot of hype from youtube, but that's not his fault. People just like his style and personality. And he's been nothing but humble when it comes to his current role in MMA. If you have a gripe, it should be the fact that he's headlining a major card already while he's still fighting stepping stones. But again, it's what the people WANT TO SEE. People don't enjoy watching great fighters as much as they enjoy watching great fights, and say what you want about Kimbo's skillset, but he always makes it a great fight.

  22. Thomas

    May 27, 2008 at 10:58 pm

raidertrojan, you speak the truth. In just the past couple weeks I have heard two interviews where Kimbo says he is still way down on the learning curve. He hasn't sought out the notariety, but hasn't shunned it because the attention is good for the sport and his promotion, as well as his own career.

  23. Tim

    May 28, 2008 at 1:09 am

I disagree in the great fight factor, i dont like watching a fight when i know someone has the huge upper hand and it will most likely be a blowout and one sided fight, that to me is not a good fight. A good fight goes back and forth and goes the distance anything settled in the first round is always a dissapointment from a fan standpoint but in all reasoning it depends upon the fighter and it goes back to matching N=Bimbo up against no names and low class fighters, you see Lesnar is not fighting chumps or want to be's he is in there right now against the top fighters in the world because he has the basic skills and advanced credentials earn him that respect. Kimbo has not earned anyones respect.

  24. Thomas

    May 28, 2008 at 1:21 am

How can anyone say what skills Kimbo does or doesn't have? Nobody has made it a minute with him, so we don't know. And as far as what Lesnar has proved it is this: to a good opponent he lost by a 1st round submission (proving what?) and the opponent he beat has a worse record than James Thompson and about comparable to Tank Abbott. Wrestlers are BORING fighters.

  25. roy

    May 28, 2008 at 1:51 am

you don't like fights that don't go the distance tim?i love watching a 1st round knock out and you like lesnar so much but he could not go the distance he is fighting some tough guys but nobody in the top ten and he only lasted 90seconds with mir and might lose to herring, i give him cerdit for taking on tough fighters right of the bat but will it help him develop maybe?

  26. Tim

    May 28, 2008 at 8:52 am

How can he say he wont last the distance in a fight, they average wrestling match goes longer than an MMA fight and you have to be a great conditioning physically, mentally and cardio wise. He has those tools and wrestlers are not boring fighter and yes i like the knockouts but Kimbo is no fighter when he faces lesser talent and Lesnar was all over Mir and lost via a rookie mistake, there is no shame in tapping out to a submission however there is shame in tapping out to G&P via strikes or being knocked out. Lesnar has proved that he has the ability and a great future in this sport however Kimbo still has that too prove.

  27. roy

    May 28, 2008 at 9:11 am

tim i think lesnar has potential but he has not proved much yet, and any way you want to look at it he lasted 90 seconds with mir thats what i meant by going the distance.i give him cerdit for fighting real tough comp right away but i don't know if he will get any wins that way.i am not a hating on lesnar its just what i think and you hate on kimbo well worshipping lesnar and i see them as similar as far as alot of hype with out having proved anything in mma yet.

  28. eatmyknees

    May 28, 2008 at 10:48 am

well for me lesnar will do better than kimbo, kimbo is a staright brawler street fighter, he maybe has a little knowledge in wrestling. but brock is a wrestler you will be his b$tch if you take him to the mat.. i hope brock will take som bjj lessons so that he will be familliarize with every situation on the mat.. i have no worries about brocks stand up, every guy has a potential to be a boxer, every man knows how to punch!!

  29. Tim

    May 28, 2008 at 11:10 am

Well said and i agree lesnar has the edge and the most experience when it comes to competition and physical dominance, he already possess the basic skills and just to let you know its much harder to learn and be very damn good at wrestling than it is to learn how to box as the eatmyknees said every man knows how to punch and to extend on that its just repition to learn boxing, wrestling is much much different and requires a great deal of time and years of training, thats my point Lesnar is the best of the best when it comes to wrestling and i dont care what you say a wrestling will 9 out of 10 times beat anyone else. because wrestlers are just that damn good and they use body weight and technique and great skill in dominating their opponent, so my question to you is really how can you compare Lesnar and Kimbo when it comes to skill you cant Lesnar is far better and has proved his status and thats why he is making the big money off the bat and fighter high class fighters from the get go, while kimbo may be making some money but not nearly as much as lesnar is and he has a long long way to go to become a respectable mma fighter, boxer, brawler yes but a true mma fighter he is far from. Lesnar still has alot to prove as well in that catagory but it will be sooner than later that you see lesnar in a championship fight.

  30. Larry

    May 29, 2008 at 4:31 pm

At the beginning MMA there were no weight classes and Gracie took on an beat all comers of any weight; usually submitting them. Big Kimbo would get his butt beat by little Rampage.

  31. Joe, Trenton NJ

    May 30, 2008 at 6:28 am

    Blame the promoter Gary Shaw.

Thompson is a step up but has a suspect jaw and Kimbo can punch, so he's going to expose it.

I hope Thompson can land some solid shots, I would like to see how aggressive Kimbois when he is "rocked".

I think a better opponent for the CBS telecast would have been Butterbean.

Say what you will the Bean takes a decent punch and has pretty good power.

It would have made for a more legitimate fight and if Kimbo were to pass that test, would make skeptics more believers.

If Kimbo wins Gary Shaw MUST put him in with one of the following opponets to give Kimbo the creditbility he needs.

    A. Butterbean

    B. Cabbage Correia

    Should Murphy win Saturday.

Murphy is young, big, strong, and can punch.

Mr. Shaw, give the fans what they deserve.

    Kimbo Vs. Jon Murphy!

Come on guys who agrees with me?

  32. Onri

    May 30, 2008 at 7:06 am

Butterbean is not a good opponent. Kimbo will just take him down and finish him on the ground like everyone else does. On the feet Butterbean is dangerous but on the ground he is a sitting duck.

  33. Thomas

    May 30, 2008 at 7:08 am

I think of "walrus" rather than "duck" when I think of Butterbean.

  34. Onri

    May 30, 2008 at 7:11 am

    I stand corrected

  35. roy

    May 30, 2008 at 8:00 am

if it where a boxing match butterbean would be tough but your right mma kimbo would just take him down.

  36. Tim

    May 30, 2008 at 8:07 am

I thought Kimbo aalready fought Cabbage?

  37. Joe G. Trenton NJ

    May 31, 2008 at 12:43 am

    OK guys.

    What about Jon Murphy?

Don't get me wrong, Kimbo is no "slouch", however when

the promoter gives him main event billing and pays Kimbo more $$$ than legitimate MMA fighters who have struggled fighting for "peanuts", that turns me off.

We, the MMA fans, the one's in the know must DEMAND that the promoter put Kimbo in a real test if he wins tonight.

If Kimbo can get all the media attention and paycheck of a champion, he MUST fight SOMEBODY!

The average person on the street may have never heard of Fedor, Cro Cop, or even Couture, but almost everyone knows who Kimbo Slice is.

Kimbo kind of reminds me of a kickboxer from he 70's by the name of Everett "Monster Man" Eddy.

    Big, intimadating looking.

Kickboxing legend Joe Lewis never fought him, but "Monster Man" was hailed as the next best thing.

He ko'd a few "tomatoe cans", then was offered a decent pay(by full contact karate standards back then)to fight a

"sack of potatoes", I mean Canadian boxer by the name of Horse Geisler.

The first guy that decided to exchange with "Monster Man".

It lasted less than a minute, with Eddy getting KO'd.

Kimbo has charisma, size, power. But, let us see what happens when his opponent can withstand his, keeps coming and starts to "unload" on his chin.

And, how will Kimbo react when he is faced with a decent grappler/submission guy?

The promoters are putting a lot of pressure on a relative "novice" to professional MMA.

Let's see how the saga continues after May 31st.

    Before I forget.

    Dear Mr. Shaw(ELITE XC):

I am still waiting for the interview your office in Passaic County promised over a year ago.

I have attempted to contact you to no avail.

While I do respect that you have a very busy schedule with the promotion of both MMA and boxing events I have waited quite awhile for the opportunity to discuss my credentials with you.

    Thank you!

    Uhh, Joe G. Trenton NJ:

You can talk to Mr. Shaw(ELITE XC) on here all you want, but this isn't his site and I bet he doesn't read this.

Like YOU SAID, the guys is busy.

  40. Joe G. Trenton NJ

    May 31, 2008 at 5:18 am

Actually, he does read various MMA sites and forums to gain insight on what MMA fans think of his organization.

And. if he didn't I bet someone who knows him would read this.

By the way, I think professionaly this site is World class.

I'll be giving my opinion from time to time.

Any questions feel free to ask.

I was involved in one of the first UFC events in 1994 when I set up a fight for my good friend who was a World Champion kickboxer.

All my best to CAGE TODAY.

Screw all your rampage. Lets see kimbo fight brock lesner or a real fighter. kimbo is a street fighter no an mma fighter. he is way overhyped for never have beating a name fighter, i mean common tank abbott has boobs for god sake. it looks like he spends more time on his coach then in the gym. If you wanna see how overhyped kimbo is put him in the octagon with lesner or pretty much anyone. hell i bet GSP roll his ass. im so sick of all the people saying how good he is. i saw him fight someone who actually knows how to fight (gannon) and he lost as expected. And who has ever even heard that name? i mean for god sake the Ufc doesn't want is that not proof enough that hes not good. he is a guy who beat the shit out of people who know nothing, he is and will never be good enough to fight in the ufc. Lesner Vs. Kimbo if you really wanna see a highlight real KO.

  42. Barry

    May 31, 2008 at 7:19 am

Tyson did the same thing. He attracted lots of attention because he had charisma and knock-out power. People said he was fighting bums, but that is how you move up.

Kimbo is being polite, honest, and admits he is a begginer. Still, he deserves his chance.

I just pray all of you take advantage of opportunities that come along like Kimbo is doing.

  43. Joe G. Trenton NJ

    May 31, 2008 at 7:49 am

Kimbo IS a nice guy, intelligent, no doubt.

    Can he fight? YES!

Can he perform in a professional MMA bout against a "live" opponent, let's see.

No matter what Kimbo does in MMA he is destined to be a MULTI MILLIONAIR.

    Mark my words.

    A movie, a book deal.

Music. The door is wide open for Kimbo.

  49. steve

    August 15, 2008 at 2:11 am

Lets set the record straight here. Kimbo is a very good brawler and street fighter. He could give almost anyone a beating in a stand up fight but there is such thing as a grund game and he needs to gte one before he can Ever be considered a Top 10 HW. But I think its funny that people call him horrible and shitty considering none of u would say that to his face. Also people think that kimbo thinks he is the badest man on the planet. Which is not the case. Kimbo says himself that he has a lot to learn about fighting but he says he will fight anyone and if thats true then u gotta respect that.

  50. Tim

    August 15, 2008 at 2:59 am

I would say it to his face with no problem, i am not afraid trust me as for one reason if he touched me well i could take his ass to court over it and take all his money and put his ass back on the street where it belongs. The man hasnt proven shit to me and any UFC fighter even Anderson Silva, Lidell, Lesnar, Vera, you name would beat his ass sensless. Seriously the guys only game is throwing punches not to mention his cardio stinks and ground game none existent, he will not last long at all, he keeps fighting no name people and tomato cans. that just proves to you how much respect Elite XC has for him, NONE they give him easy opponents cause they know if he fights top level talent he would get dominated.
