Round 1: Both fighters meet in the center, and they both circle each other, not quick to engage. They both carefully gauge each other’s timing for the first 20 seconds. Kongo suddenly bursts forward and throws a one, two combo that Mir blocks with his gloves. They both back off and re-engage.
They continue circling each other in the center, neither throwing anything. Mir leaps forward with a leg kick but Kongo backs out of the way. Kongo feints with a low jab while Mir keeps his guard held high. Mir moves forward while Kongo circles side to side.
Suddenly, Mir blasts forward with a strong left hook that catches Kongo square on the chin. Kongo drops immediately to the canvas and Mir swarms him. Mir tries to land more punches but Kongo gets a hold of his legs to take him down. Mir grabs a hold of Kongo’s neck, and when Kongo stands, Mir has him in a standing guillotine choke.
Mir squeezes it tight, and takes the guillotine down to the mat as he falls backward. Kongo’s head is trapped tightly as Mir squeezes even more. Kongo is trying to escape and pushes on Mir’s arms to get him to release the choke. Kongo’s attempt is to no avail as he starts to go limp right in front of the referee.
After a few more seconds the ref checks Kongo’s responsiveness, and there is none. The ref immediately alerts Mir to release the choke, and the fight is stopped.
Frank Mir defeats Cheick Kongo in round 1 by submission.
