No Joke: Tim Sylvia vs. Ray Mercer In The Works

Tim Sylvia

Tim Sylvia

Manager and Adrenaline MMA promoter Monte Cox is currently in talks to have former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia take on retired 46 year old boxer Ray Mercer in the main event of an Adrenaline MMA fightcard set for May 30th in Atlantic City, NJ.

Mercer previous MMA experience, involved being ground and pounded in an exhibition fight with Kimbo Slice back in 2007.

Has Tim Sylvia fallen this far since leaving the UFC? First he fought the P4P toughest heavyweight fighter in the world, Fedor Emelianenko last year at Affliction ‘Banned”. Now he’s looking for payday by taking on a retired former boxing champion with no MMA experience what so ever.

MMA is in a Lubed up, gay bashing, pill popping state of disarray.

i have no idea what the f**k is wrong with tim, he fights randy, nog and than fedor probally the toughest 3 fights anyone could think of and than does this? i know he needs a win but shit he should at leaset fight someone in mma like rothwell or nelson buentello, theres a long list of guys he could beat with out sinking to this.must people don't respect him and he dosn't have many fans and this should lose him all respect and the few fans he has.

ya and last i heard he was trying to get ken shamrock to fight him… what a coward, i wish he was still in the ufc so brock could ground and pound the fuck out of him and mir could break his other arm.

Tim Sylvia is finished. He is just trying to get a pay day thats it from here on out. If you remember he also tried to get a fight with Ken Shamrock, which would have been one sided as well. This does nothing for his career and is not interesting one bit. I'm very dissapointed.

Ray mercer will win by phantom punch or sylvia will win by flying SHART

Thats not even mma IMO. If he wants to do fake mma then go for it. I never liked watching him fight anyway. Its no different then when he used to play it safe in his fights and eek out a decision. He's not a real fighter

this is so weak. i hope he does fight ken shamrock and i hope shamrock catches him with a big punch just to get rid of this dude.

sylvia used to actually have pecks when he was on roids and was knockin people out. i think he misses knockin people out and wants to get another one for his highlight real.

If this is their main event, I would hate to see what the rest of the card looks like…

    Donnie Bannaducci vs Screetch
    Larry Holmes vs Tank Abbott
    Vince McMahon vs. Dana White

businessman, in fairness i would rather watch vince fight dana, i think vince would hand him his ass. dana would stand there and talk shit and then bam powerbomb through a table wrapped in barbwire that on fire. SWEET. For the record i have been saying tim sylvia is a joke for a long time now he just proved it. He has to fight nobodies because he cant finish fights anymore.

You've probably heard Tim mention in interviews that he's fought the most Top 10 ranked heavyweights of any fighter. He is correct, and here are the stats to prove it.

The rankings are from as of 2/4/09. I've listed the top 10 fighters with their records, the # of top 10 opponents they have faced, the total # of top 10 fights (some opponents have been faced more than once), along with the total # of top 10 wins.

Fighter / Record / Total Opponents / Total Fights / Total Wins

    1. Fedor Emelianenko (29-1-0, 1 NC) 3 5 4

    2. Andrei Arlovski (14-6-0) 3 5 2

    3. Josh Barnett (24-5-0) 2 3 2

    4. Frank Mir (12-3-0) 3 3 3

    5. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira (31-5-1, 1 NC) 4 7 3

    6. Brock Lesnar (3-1-0) 2 2 1

    7. Randy Couture (16-9-0) 3 3 1

    8. Tim Sylvia (24-5-0) 5 7 3

    9. Ben Rothwell (29-6-0) 2 2 0

    10. Alistair Overeem (29-11-0, 1 NC) 1 1 0

    Quick Summary:

-Tim is the only fighter to have faced 5 of the top 10 heavyweights; Nogueira is second (4).

-Tim and Nogueira have both had 7 fights in the top 10; Next is a tie between Fedor and Arlovski (5).

-The most top 10 wins goes to Fedor (4) and next is a 3-way tie between Tim, Mir and Nogueira (3).

tim fan those are great stats, thats what makes this fight even worse if tim where some bum i would understand but why sink so low, if he needs a win there a plenty of mma fighters he could beat and not lose respect, this fight is a insult to himself.

maybe he just needs some cash. he wasnt in the last affliction and who knows when or where he's going to be asked to fight next.

  18. Luke

    February 12, 2009 at 8:53 am

He got 800k for 30 seconds with Fedor, so i dont think its about a payday. Maybe Tim just wants to sit back and win pointless fights.

this fight will prove nothing but i suppose Tim Sylvia's days as a top heavyweight are over, Dana White said he was sick of Tim stinking up the heavyweight division and thanked Fedor for disposing of him.

Is no one really gonna say anything about this picture? Well, I never have liked Sylvia, but 40 something retired boxers aren't exactly top level competition. It almost worked out for Rocky though…

    February 12, 2009 at 2:15 pm

I'll say something about the picture. When Tim bought that scooter he was thinking "chick magnet"

  22. Ryan S

    February 13, 2009 at 1:36 pm

Too bad he didn't have that "chick magnet" when he was on that episode of blind date. He could have been one of the lucky ones to go home with her. You should have seen it, it was brutal.

he probably wasn't the ufc champion at the time or she would have banged him. either way, the pastel green color of the bike will have all of the senior citizens jealous.

  24. Joe, NJ

He will lose to Mercer, period!

How is a guy with o amateur or pro boxing matches going to beat even a 48 year old Ray Mercer who has fought in the squared circle for most of his life?

If you study Sylvia's "stand up" skills anyone who knows fighting will tell you that Tim would not even win the NY Golden Gloves tournament.

    Sure he's big, strong.

But, he plods his boxing technique is at best "fair" and he drops his hands quite a bit.

If I were Tim's trainer and manager I would set up a "smoker" in a closed door session with some tough club level heavyweight and see how he does and use it win or lose as a part of his prep work for the Mercer fight.

Tim Austin would be a good "gym" fight for Sylvia.

How does the NJ State AThletic Control Board license a good with 0 Amateur/Pro Boxing Fights?

joe, NJ crazier things have happened all the mma guys just worked over the K1 guys at their own game.
