Ortiz Awaits Santos’ Release from UFC
It seems that Tito Ortiz has made his point when it comes to women’s difficulty in cutting weight in the MMA. Cristiane “Cyborg” Santos’ trainer and adviser was interviewed by AXS.TV’s Inside MMA; he said that it is proven that due to women’s “less water weight”, his prized fighter will never be able to cut weight compared to her male counterparts.
Ortiz explained: “Right, now, we’re actually waiting for UFC to release her.” Ortiz added: “We asked for them to release her. So, [Dana White] actually talked to me [Thursday]. They gave an offer, I went to Cyborg and she said she didn’t want to do it. And we just asked for a release.”
As the interview progressed, Ortiz further explained: “Since they’re not having a 145-pound weight class, what else [can] they do? As of now, she’s gonna be released and maybe we’ll go look at somewhere else and you’ll be seeing Cyborg crush some other women’s faces.”
Opposing organization Invicta FC on the other hand is busy building a solid brand as Strikeforce bade farewell last January to its fans. Invicta will surely welcome Cyborg as one of the new faces of the association as the 27-year old bantamweight continues her quest in keeping her 10 wins and only 1 loss professional career.
Santos’ last fight was a no contest over Hiroko Yamanaka at Strikeforce-Melendez versus Masvidal in December 2011. Although she began her professional career with a loss over Erica Paes at Showfight 2 in 2005 via submission, afterwards she was never defeated in any fight. She has defeated great fighters at Strikeforce, EliteXC and Storm Samurai like Jan Finney, Gina Carano, Hitomi Akano, Shayna Baszler and so much more.
Fans of UFC 157 on the other hand will still see the much-awaited bout between the undefeated Rona “Rowdy” Rousey and Liz “Girl-rilla” Carmouche. Ronda Rousey has a perfect 6 win and no loss record while Carmouche has an 8 win and 2 loss career. The two will square off at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California, United States on February 23, 2013.
Other fighters who will support the women’s main bantamweight fight are Urijah Faber versus Ivan Menjivar, Lyoto Machida versus Dan Henderson, Chad Mendes versus Manny Gamburyan, Josh Kocheck versus Robbie Lawler, Brendan Schaub versus Lavar Johnson and so much more. Stay tuned for more news regarding “Cyborg” Santos and UFC 157.
