Randy Couture In Negotiations With The UFC, Possible Fight With Brock Lesnar At UFC 91

randy couture lawsuit by the UFC

Rumored by many sources, but confirmed by the Wrestling Observer, is that former UFC heavyweight champion Randy “The Natural” Couture is in negotiations with the UFC to possibly return and fight Brock Lesnar at UFC 91 in Portland, OR.

Dave Meltzer confirms the news:

A source close to Randy Couture has confirmed today that Couture is in negotiations with UFC for a new three-fight deal which would end the nearly nine month legal battle between the two sides.

If the deal is closed, and the source said they are hoping to conclude negotiations and announce the match sometime within the next week, Couture would face Brock Lesnar on 11/15, most likely in Portland, Oregon.

Couture was said to be hoping that if everything went well, the next two fights could involve Fedor, Nogueira, and/or Chuck Liddell. However, all previous hangups involving Emelianenko and UFC remain.

UFC 91 is set to take place in Oregon, Couture’s former home state. Couture lived in Oregon as he trained for the Olympics as an alternate on the US Greco-Roman wrestling team. After his wrestling career ended he served as a strength and conditioning coach at Organ State University before establishing the legendary MMA “Team Quest” with partners Dan Henderson and Matt Lindland.

Couture has some big brass ones. He takes any fight especially the difficult ones. If this is true, I hope he takes Lesnar and then sets up a supermatch with Fedor. I know the UFC isn't dumb enough to pass up on that Megafight.

UFC already passed that fight up, but if this match does happen with lesnar or fedor couture is gonna drop both of them to the mat, lol this 40 year old natural light heavy weight fighter was about to clean up the heavy weight division for a second but of course drama had to start!

Randy Couture is a Legend, I respect him more than any other MMA fighter… but, IMO he has to go back to the UFC.. if he wants to continue his fighting career.

He has admitted that he wants the Fedor fight in the Octagon rather the Affliction Ring cos a lot of his game utilises cage tactics (look what he did to Gonzarga)… I can't see him beating Fedor… but he's got more chance if it's in th cage.

Are affliction going to lease Fedor to the UFC for 1 fight??? Who knows…

Personally, I'm not interested in seeing him fight Lesnar.. if he is going back to the UFC – he should fight the interim champ 'Big Nog'…

I agree w/ DanP in that Couture is suppose to be fighting nogueira… cuz how can there be 2 heavyweight champions running around and not facing each other?

HOLY CHRIST! This is insane! How do you make odds for this? I think Couture might try for submissions… but w/ Lesnar knowing this, will he try to do the same? I wouldn't think Lesnar would as confident as he was w/ Herring on the ground. I think he's gonna have to try some risks to attempt to end the fight

Couture might just try to keep it standing/clinch like he did w/ Gonzaga, Lensar will have a 6" reach advantage!

Jesus, I want to see what Couture comes up w/ for a game plan

Oh man I really wanted to see Lesnar tested, and this just might be it, I'm so happy Lesnar isn't fighting Congo anymore

this is gonna have a ridiculous pay per view draw

What Randy lacks in size against Lesnar he makes up for in intelligent game plans and experience. Lesnar has proven to be explosive off the bat, but I'm sure Randy can come up with a way to neutralize this and make him work for the whole fight. Randy is older, no doubt about it, but he is ever the athlete and has great conditioning, if he is able to utilize the clinch and dirty boxing to take away Lesnar's reach advantage and pull off some judo trips Lesnars going to blow his wad trying to get back up from the ground and work for his own takedowns. I can see this going like the Silvia fight with Randy winning by decision. All that being said, this is going to fuckin rock, can't wait.

this would be a crazy fight and i would never count randy out but i think brock will take it randy..

but if randy wins its going to be Randy vs Fador

ok yeah brock looked good against Herring but come on guys they are already comparing him to Randy? He got subd to Mir in round one. What the F* is this crap?

Having Randy fight Lesnar is out of line and just plain stupid. I agree with Wayne in saying there cannot be to HW Champs in the UFC. Nog is the INTERIM Champ which means he gets first shot at the champ if he comes back. If they make Randy fight Lesnar, then they should strip Randy of his belt and give it to Nog. Otherwise it's like saying Lesnar got a heavyweight shot after losing to Mir and winning against Herring? Like Herring is a top contender- Horseshit

While I think this is a crazy match up, I think Randy would do to Lesnar what he did to Sylvia – prove that the hype is just that.

I can see Couture agreeing to fight Nogiera and I think that is what would be the best for Couture and the UFC Heavyweight division right now. On top of that I would really like to see that fight happen.

After I'm sure the UFC would be more flexible about the Fedor thing and they aren't dumb, now Fedor's name is back on top and he is bankable, they would agree to a one fight deal. Then try to leverage Fedor for the future.

yc, I don't see Randy takig Fedor.

    August 30, 2008 at 6:15 am

I just remembered that Nog is already scheduled to fight Mir on December… So the winner is is going to need 2-4 months off after December so the next available fight is Feb to April

I can't see Couture/Lesnar being a title fight… so it will probably just be a 3 rounder… but what does that say for the champ if he loses to Lesnar?

And I don't know some of you people think this fight is going to go like the Sylvia fight. When Sylvia goes to the ground, his only goal is to get back to his feet. Lesnar is a legit, highly accomplished collegiate wrestler. He put his wrestling skills on display against herring.

I think Lesnar will have to advantage if Couture tries to match wrestling for wrestling, in technique & especially size. But of course MMA is not wrestling… couture also has submissions and striking at his disposal, if he goes for the ground

  13. Patrick

    August 30, 2008 at 8:17 am

True, Sylvia is no wrestler, and Brock is a highly accomplished wrestler, but I still feel randy will find ways to take him down, maybe not keep him down for a long time, but I'm sure we will get a chance to see what brock can do on his back, and randy won't make it easy for him to get back up……safely.

Guys, I agree with you, but you have to factor in the size and strength difference. I think Lesnar would try to stay on the feet against Couture, but if it went to the ground, I think Lesnar would take it due to his damn strength and wrestling background. I have a friend that weighed in at 255 and fought a guy weighing in at 340 (It was ridiculous). He went all three rounds and lost because the guys laid on him. He has great bjj, but the guy was too big and strong.

I know those weight differences aren't the same as Couture and Lesnar, but the strength is there. I think Lesnar could end up winning by control. I also think Lesnar has a pretty strong jaw, even though he hasn't gotten hit in it very much (I don't think)

Quote from Istunn "Otherwise it’s like saying Lesnar got a heavyweight shot after losing to Mir and winning against Herring? Like Herring is a top contender- Horseshit" Ok Mir's last 5 fights.

2006 first fight back-tko loss Rd1 to maricio cruz

2006 boring rebound win-una.Dec. over Dan Christinson

2006 An up and coming Vera- big tko loss in a minute of first rd.

2007 Antoni Hardonk-win by Kimura Rd 1 but the guy is horrible on the ground.

2008 he gets his ass beat saved by ref for claiming back of head bs and pulled a sub out his ass to win.

NOW DOES HE DESERVE A TITLE SHOT? cuz he hasnt beat any contender besides Lesnar and it was only from lack of exp.

All in all I would still love to see Rany and Leasnar fight. It is very interesting.

Its going to happen. Mark my words. Couture see's the weaknesses in Lesnars young game and he want the challenge. Its going to be made official soon. Just watch.

    August 30, 2008 at 5:39 pm

Seriously….come on Couture..you cant ever count him out but seriously if he fights Brock he is going to get worked…Lesnar is to much for him…he will have at least a 40lb weight advantage if not more come fight time and he definetly can not match power or speed with Brock, how can you say he will take lesnar down..hmm a 220lb man trying to take down a 280lbs man…yeah thats going to work especially against a wrestler the caliber as lesnar is and asstrong and fast as well..i am not saying this will be easy but lesnar should have this fight hands down if it happens he is just too MUCH for Couture in every aspect, he cant just clinch like he did with Sylvia as Brock will take his ass down hard core and work him silly. The man is too strong, fast and explosive. I agree he should be fighting NOG but that will not happen and i see this that if lesnar wins he will fight the winner of the NOG and MIR fight early or mid next year for the Championship as he would somewhat be the champ if he beats Couture. Now anything can happen but i do not see this going Randys way at all…Lesnar is strickly too damn much for him.

  19. TIM

    August 30, 2008 at 5:44 pm

I see the point in this match up but its really practiclly a cake walk for lesnar…Kongo would be the better match up…Couture is over the hill and i dont see him being able to dominate lesnar as far as wrestling goes and you can count out matching strenght and speed so whats left…hmm hopefully catching lesnar in a submission..aint going to happen so he is shit out of luck in every aspect…if this does happen it will bring veiwers big time as everyone wants to see this fight happen but lesnar and i guarandamntee you all will win this fight he is just too damn much to handle…

    August 31, 2008 at 12:32 am

Thats pretty much what I was saying Tim. Lesnar, worst case scenario, can even just hold Randy down and ground and pound him, in fact that's probably what he'll do because he wouldn't want to risk getting caught by a much better submission artist in Couture. As much as I like Couture, I think Lesnar's wrestling and strength will carry him through

  21. the dude

    August 31, 2008 at 2:33 am

i agree tim. randy is the man but maybe his time has past along with so many other names. there are many holes in lesnars game but he's a beast and i cant see randy keeping him down. much respect to randy but brock is the next big thing:) plus if he punches randy like he did herring it could kill him

  22. passing through

    August 31, 2008 at 3:00 pm

yeah, it sounds like there are alot of manufactured fans here. All this is an attempt by the UFC to grow more tallent in Lesnar to support a weak ( for the most part) heavyweight division. Randy is an old motherfucker, but this is mma not proffesional wrestling. Brock is a completely dominant wrestler who was winning against Mir untill he made a mistake and got caught, then went on to a decision against Herring who has a shit ground game and got schooled by Jake Obrien in a gimme fight. Randy will stay away from the big shots Lesnar will make a mistake, and randy WILL take him down and either repeat the process and win a decision or get a submission. Fuck Brock lesnar he is not the next big thing.

I am a big randy fan, HOWEVER, I am about ready for him to go away for good. The I just wanna cash one last huge check routine is getting a bit old, if you wanna fight get in the ring otherwise, go away. Their are plenty of guys that would take any fight randy would take for a tenth of the money that could get a great showing from, he cant fight forever sooner or later someone other than fedor has to be dominant at heavyweight, MIGHT be lesnar, WON'T be Kimbo, but the fact is your already a hall of famer, just go out like elway, on top, don't turn into Ken Shamrock

  28. TIM

    September 1, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Damn right…no disrespect to him but he could be in for the worst ass kicking of his life and most embarrasing one as well if he fight lesnar…how would it look that a wrestler the caliber as Randy gets schooled and beaten like he was an amatuer wrestler…Lesnar will flat out dominate him.

  29. Nate Fury

    September 2, 2008 at 1:30 am

This is so huge! I really hope this fight goes down. This is a major opportunity for Brock Lesnar to prove he is the future of the heavyweight division. I like Randy, but will be going for Brock in this one.
