According to Fiveouncesofpain.com, Affliction is in preliminary discussions to go head to head with UFC 100 by holding their third event on July 11th, free on network TV.

“Affliction Entertainment is currently engaged in preliminary discussions regarding the possibility of promoting its third-ever event on Saturday, July 11. Such a booking would put the promotion in direct competition with the UFC’s historic UFC 100 pay-per-view event …. meetings are expected to take place within the next several weeks regarding a possible television partner for the proposed event. If enough fighters were willing to accept a reduced rate to compete on the show.”

Sounds like a bad decision for Affliction to going head to head with a stacked UFC 100 fightcard. The report also quotes a source saying Affliction wants to get out of MMA “with a bang”.

“One source also indicated to us that the possible July event for Affliction could be the company’s last MMA show, with the popular lifestyle clothing label looking to “go out with a bang” by going up against UFC 100.”

It doesn't seem that business smart to go up against the UFC on that day unless the rumor is true and they want to go out with a bang.

this makes sense although they should not go after ufc 100 a weaker card and they would have smashed it, they want to put it on network tv for free to counter the ufc, most mma fans will watch both the ufc fans will watch ufc 100 and some will watch both the causal fan will watch the free one.if it where up against a weak ufc card i could see alot of people not ordering the ufc but 100 is ballsy of them to go after.

elite did what 6-7 million viewers, if afflcition gets half of that they have reached more people than both of there ppv events, having it on network tv they will get something from the network so they will lose less money and reach more people.

Roy, you could also do what I will probably do. Order the UFC and watch Affliction. You can catch the rebroadcast of UFC.

sounds like a dumb idea to me. Roy thanks for the heads up – still can't fight a "reliable source" yet for the knocked out Tim Sylvia story.

This is stupid on Afflictions part, one being they done have the draw factor to even make a case to this. Number one reason this is UFC 100 the ultimate show of MMA history a cultimative of sport athletics of past and present not to mention the fights on this card are huge and while if this is true i respect the balls they have for doing this but again its going to cost them to much money especially to put their card on for free on tv, no sponsor will endorse them that already endorses the UFC at that time they will lose major money overall its not a good idea to try and go head to head with the UFC at their biggest event ever, now i understand their logic that UFC did this to them last year but come one the UFC can do anything they damn well want to and make money just because there that big of an organization. Affliction isnt near the size of the UFC and this is a bad idea and a money loser for them all around. The UFC will easily make over 30mil this fight card overall and possibly set new paperview records which would bring the total even higher. Affliction cant stop the UFC or compete with it just yet anyways.

So they want to go out with a bang.

You mean like shooting themselves in the head?

We all remember the article about Affliction wanting to stop doing shows and go back to doing just shirts and trying to mend things with the UFC right?

Going up against ufc 100 isn't going to mend anything and will likely get them permanently blackballed.

Add them not doing shows anymore?

So how are they going to promote their shirts? Strikeforce? gimme a break.

other than GSPvsAlves it will not be that great of a card you will see. Mir will further delay bout with Lesnar til August and Affliction will be the better choice with Fedor/Barnett.

It's not just the card, UFC kinda put the sport on the map. There's something about dignity and mild card or stacked card i'm getting 100 no matter what. If Affliction is going to be on network tv i can just record it and watch it later…I do want to see Fedor fight but that is prob the only fight on the card i'm really excited about.

gosh, have these guts forgotten about DVR or TIVo? I will order the ppv and record affliction, and enjoy both cards. I love watchin Fedor fight.

UFC needs to start showing all of their PPV undercards free on spike to get the full value of their monthly usually water downed events. why not choose the freebee it will be better and you can check the ticker for ufc live results.

Because some televised cards end too fast jack. I believe the last card had a few first round knockouts. I'd rather see the replay of an unaired bout than watching them kill time.

this aint stupid, affliction will get hella ratings that night, because everybody will watch fedor fight for free for the first time ever, and then watch ufc 100 on ppv after the first showing is done, because we all know once u order the ufc show u will get the encore right afterwords on ppv, ther aint no win, loose for MMA fans for this one its a win, win for us no matter what were gonna be able to watch both cards on the same day its that simple.

Point is from a Business perspective its very stupid and they will lose insane amounts of money, what network is going to put them on live TV during the biggest sporting event of MMA history, so what the card isnt full of stacked names it has some history to the fight card that goes back ages, respect is number one, the UFC placed MMA on this map. Sure as MMA fans this is great news it works out for us but from a business mindset affliction will lose major money shit they barely broke even i think on their last fight card and that was paperview. Again what network cable company will put them on when their is the UFC going on and what sponsors are going to pay the networks to put this on national cable tv? when the UFC has all the major sponsorships. It dont matter to me as i get to see two fight shows in one night but come on does affliction really need to bend even further over and take it up the ass from the UFC? Sad thing is there doing this to themselves. Affliction is to weak right now to stand with the UFC. Bottom line you have you dedicated fight fans and UFC fans and MMA fans no matter what the UFC will make money and affliction will lose money on this one.

tim you keep saying they will lose a ton of money, but that is what they have been doing, i don't think they should have went against ufc 100 but i still think they will get more viewers and lose less money.elite did 6-7 million viewers those people are not ordering ufc ppv's they are there for free fights and if affliction is free people will watch.

Didn't the article say that they would be able to put on this show IF enough fighters take a pay cut? I don't know about you but I'm sure Fedor won't take a paycut. But then again, doesn't he get a percentage of the PPV's? I'm sure they are still gonna fill his pockets phat so everyone else will have to fight for less. We'll see if that happens

  17. Tim

    March 19, 2009 at 3:22 am

I agree free fights i watch no argue with that, they have been losing money and it makes no sense to me why they would try and put on a free network show on the biggest UFC card ever mainly only becuase of the milestone 100 but you get the picture, In order to possibly make any money on this one they would need to have all the fighters fight for a 1/3 of their actually pay which is not going to happen due to contract regulations being if they fight they must be paid their full pay. I think this will either stay a rumor or turn into a disaster for Affliction again this wont hurt the UFC so i dont understand their logic of trying to put it on the same night. If they really want fight fans they need to give these free fights when the UFC is not.

  18. roy

    March 19, 2009 at 3:45 am

yeah taking on theone of the ufc's biggest events is crazy, they will lose money but i still think they will lose less and get more people watching.between there 2 ppv events i bet they didn't get 150,000 buys this one will have 10 times that amount watching and thats low ball figures.

  19. Tim

    March 19, 2009 at 4:19 am

I understand what your saying but point being is it worth the mass losses just to get a great ratings on a network tv show? especially when your going head to head agiants the UFC's biggest show and they will still have over 500,000 buys, i understand thier attempt to bring in more people but this is not the time to do it but i also see this as another side to them as maybe there realizing that they cant put on shows if they keep apying thier fighters that kind of money so instead they drop the paperview because there is no sense in going head to head with the UFC on the same day and they turn their focus into network tv and ratings which would bring in more sponsorships and money potential if it does good but in order for this to happen they need to drop their fighter pay by1/3 of what they pay them currently.

  20. Tim

    March 19, 2009 at 4:22 am

Oh which will not happen….the fighters will not take pay cuts.

  21. tom

    March 19, 2009 at 4:41 am

good idea if free but if its pay paper view ufc will kill them

  22. Dave

    March 19, 2009 at 11:08 am

The bottom line is all about the network deal. If they can put this on a national network, especially a Fedor fight, it will stomp a pay per view GSP fight. Even the most faithfull UFC fans have to admit that. Fighters may take a pay cut to get that kind exposure. What they don't make in allowance, you would think that they could more than make up for in advertising. This would be great for not only the sport of MMA, but for the fans if this works. Paying $55 for a fight only to be disappointed by injuries or slow pace isn't good with anyone.

i just read that they can't afford fedor vs. barnett on cable tv. so they will be fighting separate fights. sorry affliction, but i'm not skipping ufc 100 for tim sylvia vs. paul buentello. its sad. they say they want to go out with a bang then they need to make fedor/barnett happen.

I heard if its a free card Barnett is fighting Arlovski and Vitor Belfort is stepping up to fight Fedor which would be something, but if they make it PPV Fedor/Barnett is still a go. This still seems messed up to me.

Fedor fans would tune in to see this guy fight a senior citizen! It doesn't matter how lame an opponent they put in front of this guy the Fedor fans will eat it up! Belfort…Arlovski??? Would have been a good card say 10 years ago! I'll watch the Affliction card the same way I watch all of them… a 30 second video clip on the web the next day! If this isn't the last Affliction who will fight Fedor next? Ortiz??? LMAO! Maybe they can get Shamrock after his ban is up! AFFLICTION = LAME

wow! if they think they are actually guna b able to compete with ufc 100 , they are fuckin dumber than their gay little shirts. any mma fan would laugh at the thought of missing ufc 100, for affliction bullshit. it doesnt matter if its free or not. the only way that they could ever get me to watch that shit, is if Fedor was fighting Couture and even then… i would just DVR it, and go watch ufc 100. FUCK AFFLICTION

fedor isn't a bad fighter, he just hasn't had proper competition, in my opinion. he would be in a good place with ufc, but i don't think he'll join. Dana white has made it pretty clear he doesn't like fedor. So i think he'll just end up fading away before he can become really recognizable. Hell, most people don't know the name of mma fighters if they aren't ufc.

Fedor has been tested per say a few times he has faced quality opponents not all of them have been high caliber but his skills are amazing. i am not a Fedor lover by any means believe me i just respect him for his fighting ability and his dedication to MMA and other sports. Affliction will not last long at all.
