Russow Signs With The UFC, Ishii Passes For Sengoku

Heavyweight prospect Mike Russow (11-1) signs with the UFC and will debut UFC Fight Night 19.

Chicago police officer Mike Russow has signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Messages to Russow seeking comment and confirmation were not returned last week after The Times first learned of the signing, but he told Chicago’s MMA that he had signed a four-fight deal with the world’s largest mixed martial arts promotion.

Though Russow told Chicago’s MMA he did not know when his first fight for the UFC would be, sources close to Russow have told The Times his debut will come on Sept. 16 at Fight Night 19 in Oklahoma City. [NWI]

Pictured above as a guest of Dana White’s at UFC 92, Satoshi Ishii, the 2008 Japanese Olympic Gold Medalist in Judo has signed a deal to fight at Sengoku:

A press conference was held in Tokyo today, announcing that 2008 Olympic Gold Medalist in Judo, Satoshi Ishii, has signed with World Victory Road to fight in their SENGOKU event. No debut date was announced but he is expected to debut within the year. This is easily the biggest signing of the year and a HUGE signing for WVR.

When speaking about the reason he chose SENGOKU he said that in Japan, SENGOKU is the organization he respects the most. He also said that Josh Barnett will face the worlds strongest in Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction. If Josh wins he will become the strongest in the world and with a fighter like that existing in SENGOKU, it will have another attraction. Another reason is that his Judo seniors such as Yoshida, Takimoto, and Nakamura are SENGOKU fighters. [Nightmare of Battle]

Smart move for Ishii, who is still beginner in MMA. Let WVR spoon feed him opponents and get some experience before he makes a run at the improving UFC heavyweight division.

this was Dana's HUGE announcement that was keeping people on their toes as he tweetered this weekend??? nobody knows who Russow is. and ishii is 0-0, from what i recall. he might be a judo champion, but that doesn't translate into MMA. plus, ishii calling out the winner of fedor-barnett as a 2nd fight isn't smart.
