UFC 85: BJ Penn vs. Sean Sherk

BJ Penn

UFC President Dana White stated at a post UFC 80 press conference, that Former UFC lightweight Champion Sean Sherk will face Current UFC lightweight Champion BJ Penn at an unannounced fight sometime in May.

This will be BJ Penn’s firsts title defence after claiming the lightweight title by defeating Joe Stevenson at UFC 80.

UFC 85 is rumored to me May 25 in Las Vegas, but don’t be surprised if the UFC plans another event around Cinco De Mayo (May 5).

hell yeah.. sherk is going to take this

  2. Patrick89

    January 21, 2008 at 3:48 am

I would have to respectfully disagree. Sherk is a great fighter, wrestler with a good record but I don't think he has anything that can suprise Penn. Matt Hughes for instance is another strong fighter with great wrestling and BJ submitted him in the first and had him in some trouble in the second untill he gassed. Now with that said, I think BJ is going to be in good shape for that fight and will keep his takedowns at bay with his striking untill he sees a submission opportunity.

    January 21, 2008 at 3:58 am

if u watched Daiz vs Sherk it shows that sherk can strike good hes fast and has power.. but u do havea good point ab the Matt hughes. in all its going to be a good fight.

  4. Patrick89

    January 21, 2008 at 4:17 am

Yeah, i agree it's going to be a good fight either way. You are right though, I did neglect to mention that Sherk has some good strikes.

    January 21, 2008 at 5:24 am

i don't know sherk is tough but b.j at his best will do about the same thing he did to joe to sherk. sherk is not as good as hughes and hughes in both fights realy had nothing over b.j except cardio in the 2nd fight.sherk could make it a fight and if he could last into the later rounds maybe, but i don't see b.j coming in out of shape for this fight and will probally dominate sherk where ever the fight goes.

    January 21, 2008 at 5:39 am

BJ is gonna dominate sherk for sure!!!

  7. Patrick89

    January 21, 2008 at 6:05 am

When BJ comes into a fight in shape I don't think there is anybody in the division that could put him in trouble. He is too well rounded in all aspects of the sport to feel uncomfortable wherever the fight may go.

    January 21, 2008 at 7:38 am

bj is going to win that fight i guarantee it. stevenson has great wrestling and i think sherk will be a little stronger and more aggressive but the same end. bj with his hand raised.

    January 21, 2008 at 8:59 am

    looking forward to this

penn was gassed in beating an exsanguinating/blinded stevenson.

    sherk's conditioning should prevail-

    hope dope monitoring does too!!

  10. derek

    January 21, 2008 at 9:14 am

i hope bj fights GSP after he beats sherk. then if GSP wins, he should move up to middleweight to take on anderson silva. this would make the UFC something.

  11. dane drebin

    January 21, 2008 at 9:15 am

bj wasnt gassed man what the hell are u talkin about??? he didnt slow down at all why do u say that cuz he was breathing hard after the fight anyone would no matter how hard u train. you are just straight up wrong man.

  12. roy

    January 21, 2008 at 9:28 am

i think b.j has a good shot at beating gsp if they fight again and i would like to see gsp against silva but dan may have the belt by then.

  13. Patrick89

    January 21, 2008 at 9:46 am

jcdemtl, what the hell! BJ wasn't gassed at all, he beat Joe and made it look easy! Were you watching a rerun of another fight maybe? Anyway, like I said before, Sherk is a great fighter and I think he'll put up a good effort but he is going to be outclassed in every possible direction the fight could go by Penn. I'm not even sure that conditioning is going to be a factor, becuase BJ is probably going sub him in the second round. As far as BJ and St. Pierre go it was such a close fight last time you could make compelling arguments for either side, but either way it would be a very close one again I'm sure.

  14. davis

    January 21, 2008 at 9:55 am

Hopefully the "juiced" sherk won't win. Clearly he is scared to fight without juice. Go Penn!

  15. derek

    January 21, 2008 at 3:25 pm

penn absolutely dominated stevenson. i don't know what fight you saw. stevenson couldn't land any strikes while standing… and when it went to the ground, bj controlled the entire thing with superior ju jus and an elbow that opened a cut.

  16. kom34

    January 21, 2008 at 3:25 pm

i just watched the best fights of 2007 show. what i noticed was that bj could have finished pulver with an armbar in the first, he had it right there and being a blackbelt in bjj, it was his for the taking. it looked like he let pulver roll out so that he could get him in a triangle choke. bj said he wanted to dislocate pulvers shoulder before the fight. after watching the fight over again, i think bj had his heart set on choking pulver unconscious. he is that good and he is going to put a hurt on sherk.

  17. DanP

    January 21, 2008 at 8:59 pm

I was at UFC 80… and I can tell you the fight was one way traffic… BJ Penn Destroyed Joe Daddy. So much so that we thought the fight had been stopped at the end of the first round.

Joe daddy has looked very good so far in his MMA career… but he was totally out classed by Penn… that is how good BJ Penn is.

    I think he will beat Sherk… and then the UFC should start having inter-weigth competions against the elite in each weight class;

    Anderson Silva

    BJ Penn

With fighters having to move up & down in weight inorder to fight!

  18. Joe

    January 21, 2008 at 10:43 pm

Penn will beat Sherk just about as easily.

    January 22, 2008 at 1:25 am

Danp…as much as i would love to see that, i do not believe it will happen. Dana White loves his champions and if there are interweight fights, it will confuse the weightclasse (why boxing is so fucked up) and the champion system would be to hard to decifre

    January 22, 2008 at 1:26 am

Also Penn will destroy Sherk…he is one of the best fighters to ever strap on the gloves…he will be inducted (or at least should) at the next fight

    January 27, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Im glad to see all the crystal ball readers out there. I have A set of devining rods. Lets look for water…When we seen Penn atfer UFC 80. His cornerers were almost carring him to his motel room. If he wasnt totaly spent, he was totaly wasted. Sean has so much class, is such a great person, and he loves the U.S.A. not like penn who wants Hawiaii to have nothing to do with the GREAT COUNTRY THAT WE ARE PRIVALAGED TO LIVE IN. THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Go ahead and root for the Benadict Arnold

  25. dane drebin

  26. derek

    January 27, 2008 at 5:33 pm

the only reason why penn rushed back to hawaii was because the reefer was waiting for him.

  27. JOE

    January 27, 2008 at 5:46 pm

This isn't a political forum. It's about MMA. Albeit, for the record, BJ Penn has the right to believe anything he wants. As far as being a "Benedict Arnold" (which is the correct spelling by the way) Penn has never switched sides, nor committed any form of treason. You should crack open a book and do some research about our great country and the people we elected (or didn't elect) to run it before you start talking about privileges(which is also the correct spelling for your records.)

  28. kom34

    January 27, 2008 at 6:24 pm

lol…wish i paid as much attention as you in my american history classes joe. i'd never back sherk over penn. sherk cheated and tried to cycle off but got caught. i started liking how penn wasn't politically correct in saying that he thought sherk cheated and didn't deserve his title. i also liked when he said he didn't want to fight the cheater. politics aside, its going to be a great fight and i can't wait for it to happen.

  29. JOE

    January 27, 2008 at 6:49 pm

LOL..Thanks. It just bugs me when people get on their soapbox and start condemning someone for expressing their beliefs. Then they have the audacity to act like they’re defending the country when free speech is one of our fundamental rights. I may not like what some people have to say, but I’ll defend their right to say it. Anyway, I’m looking forward to the fight too.

  30. MJ1223

    January 30, 2008 at 4:50 pm

Seriously, LOL, re: JOE and Justifier. One more thing… it's divining, not devining, and it's Hawaii, not Hawiaii. At least Justy got U.S.A. right.

All technicalities, and possible typo's, aside… BJ is, easily, one of the top 5 most talented MMA-ers ever, if not the #1. Yes, he's shown a pretty lackadaisical attitude in the past. And that has cost him. But, I agree with the 99% majority who say, "when he's on his game, focused, and in shape, he's a MONSTER."

    Penn via tap-out.

  31. derek

    January 30, 2008 at 5:17 pm

yes, despite his beliefs or whatever, bj penn has A LOT of fans. i don't really know why, but he has tons of fans… more fans than sean sherk and definitely more than tim sylvia.

  32. little bit

    February 4, 2008 at 4:34 am

You guys are forgetting the size of Sherk's neck. Even if B.J. gets a hold of it, Sherk can pull out of any choke. We have seen him do this many times before. The man is a machine, and at 155 he is as good as Matt Hughes is at 170. I just think this fight will go into the later rounds. We should see a war, especially since Sherk has not hid the fact that he does not like Penn at all!

  33. Gregory

    February 7, 2008 at 9:12 am

honestly to me sherk is like a smaller Brock Lesnar, Penn has awesome skill but i just see Sherk taking it

  34. Morey

    February 7, 2008 at 9:28 am

Sherk can muscle his way out of a rear naked or guillotine for the most part, but if he gets into a tight triangle he's going to have to circle quick or powerbomb to get out. His big neck is a benefit but his arteries are the same size as everyone else. If he gets in a tight choke he goes night night just like everyone else.

  35. Cody

    February 25, 2008 at 5:20 am

All u guys r idiots sherk is one of the hardest working and best fighters in the mma all u guys r mentally challenged if u think penns gay ass is gona win.

  36. roy

    February 25, 2008 at 5:47 am

if he works so hard and is so good why was he juicing

  37. Kash

    February 25, 2008 at 5:55 am

Sherk is a great fighter who works really hard. But its hard for me to think that he wouldn't work harder if he is on an illegal substance that will heal his muscles faster. As far as Sherk being on of the best in MMA, we will see about that in May.

  38. anonymous123

    February 26, 2008 at 12:11 am

sean sherk is 31-2 and bj is 12-4 how can u say there is class in BJ? you cannot judge the person by its win or loss in the ring but i can see that you haven't have seen all the fights and maybe study in your statistics. shark will win straight.

  39. roy

    February 26, 2008 at 2:03 am

and who has sherk fought to get that record where b.j was fighting the best in the world and people out of his weight class.sherk is one of the best l.w.'s out there yes but he will lose to b.j.

  40. lifeless420

    February 28, 2008 at 4:34 pm

lets just see how strong sherk's work ethic is now that he's off the juice.

  41. Corey

    February 28, 2008 at 5:36 pm

You can't campare the number of fights because BJ admits that he only likes to fight 2 or 3 times a year. That doesn't mean that he isn't better than Sherk. BJ will win hands down.

  42. Trevor

    February 29, 2008 at 4:26 am

No one trains harder than sean sherk. He testest positive for unnatural high levels of Nandrolone, about double the normal limit. People who have tested positive for this steroid normal have between 4 and 10 times the legal limit. The California State Athletic Commission couldn't even prove that the drug tests were administered. Have you seen UFC All Access with Sean Sherk's training routine? If you haven't watch it. This guy is the most dedicated fighter in the UFC (I agree that BJ's in the top 3 for talent) and couldn't it be quite possible that he's as big and ripped as he is for his superior dedication to training (he's been lifting weights since he was 7) and nutrition (Sherk says he eats for performance, not for taste). No one's as well conditioned or pound-for-pound as strong as Sean Sherk in the UFC. I'm just really sick of this guy getting ripped on, and everybody assuming big guys who work out or all athletes are on juice. While you can debate whether he'll beat bj or not (I'm betting on Sherk), just give this guy the respect he deserves.

  43. bob

    March 2, 2008 at 12:50 am

Hey trevor ,By the way Sherk did test positive they had hearings and through those hearings determined beyond a reasonable doubt that he was using steroids . That is why BJ is not the interim champion but THE champion in the lightweight division . I personally think Roger Huerta or the kid in wec urijah faber needs to gain 10 lbs and fight bj that i would love to see .But as far as people ripping on sherk he is not any different than Barry Bonds Or roger clemens just another cheating fool .

  44. little bit

    March 4, 2008 at 9:15 am

I think that Sherk is definitely going to take the belt from B. J. Penn. Sherk is strong, fast, and he doesn't quit! He fought Kenny Florian with a 7 inch gash next to his eye and blood running all over him and his opponent. Sherk is also a cardio freak. I agree with Trevor. If you have not watched the all access with Sherk, you need to. Penn is a great fighter, but stylistically this match is not a good one for Penn. Sherk is too aggressive and will wear Penn out before the third round. As far as the juicing thing, I think he has been punished enough already. Give the man a break!

  45. Joe B. Florendo

    March 5, 2008 at 8:56 am

This will be a great fight for sure.

But I believe Penn will win because Penn can smell blood and go for the kill where as Sherk just lays on his opponent and looks for the decision.

    "Sherk, your dead!" BJ Penn

  46. Adam N

    March 6, 2008 at 6:52 am

Well Bj is a good fighter with good stand up and good submissions but dont forget that Sherk is a very strong guy with great ground game, i dont think penn will beat sherk that easy, not as easy as he beat stevenson.

Sherk will go for the take down first, that i can almost promise you.

I hope sherk wins, with gnp in the 2nd round

  47. G'man definite

    March 8, 2008 at 9:51 pm

    BJ PENN,

Will definitely have fun toying sherk like a little tiny Barbie Doll and will punishing Freak Nandrolone Steriod, Once a user will alway be a user. Sherk the jerk has no Intigrity,Values, Beliefs, and comfidence that is why He is A Big Loser Oh I mean User!!!!! Jerk can't walk the walk.

  48. G'man definite

    March 8, 2008 at 9:56 pm

BJ PENN will give Sherk the Jerk the worst nightmare of his life that will last forever 24/7. If was smart sherk, He will make some kind of excuse not to fight at all. To the juiser.

  49. G'man definite

    March 8, 2008 at 10:00 pm

BJ PENN will give Sherk the Jerk the worst nightmare of his life that will last forever. No Cure 24/7 it a lifetime. If sherk was smart, He will make some kind of excuse not to fight at all. To the juiserloser.

  50. Adam N

    March 9, 2008 at 12:10 am

Well G´man we shall see who the winner will be after 24/7, if sherk wins you should start making excuses.

By the way, that juiserloser speach is just b*llsh*t, why do you think he was clear to fight after just 6 months? he did go through a polygraph and passed.

I dont say anything about Bj being a bad fighter or anything cause he destroyed stevenson, but dont forget that sherk has a good record, more fights than penn.

  51. Adam N

    March 9, 2008 at 12:21 am

    I ment 24/5!!!

  52. little bit

    March 10, 2008 at 3:53 am

G´man, I think you are using Sherk's hot test results as an excuse. We will see who the better fighter is soon enough. B.J. does not have as impressive a record as Sherk, nor does he fight as much. B.J. is a good fighter, but he has met his match with the Muscle Shark.

  53. Adam N

    March 10, 2008 at 9:53 pm

Couldn´t agree with you more Little bit, his record is much better than penn´s and trains much harder.

If sherk doesn´t get a serious cut or anything i think he will destroy penn with take-downs and gnp.

  54. little bit

    March 11, 2008 at 12:32 am

Thank you Adam! Sherk's superior wrestling skills and cardio will end this fight before 5 rounds.

  55. Adam N

    March 11, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Yeah im thinking the same thing, the fight will be over long before 5 rounds.

And yeah his cardio and strength much better than penn´s,and the record 33-2-1 much better.and he have never lost a fight by submission.

The fight will be very interesting either way.

I also like to say that it will be interesting to see if Penn will brag about his abs like he did after the fight against Stevenson in the fight with the Muscle shark hehe.

  56. little bit

    March 11, 2008 at 11:41 pm

If it is an ab contest he wants, then that is what he shall have.

Sherk is always in shape, and he will definitely bring his best game to the octagon.

  57. Joe B. Florendo

    March 13, 2008 at 10:37 am

Like I said in comment #45

Sherk is not a finisher. If Sherk gives his back which wrestlers do, than I know Penn will finish the fight.

  58. onri

    March 13, 2008 at 12:04 pm

Sherk's going to lose because he's not a finisher. I agree with Joe B. Its only a matter of time before Sherk gives up a bad position and then the fight will be over.

  59. danedrebin

    March 13, 2008 at 12:06 pm

ya who exactly was the last person sherk finished in the ufc? and when was the last time penn was finished besides when hughes broke his rib? i dont think thats a likely situation. anything can happen but if sherk has any chance of winning i think its by LnP

It was Tiki Ghosn by Submission at UFC® 30: The Battle On The Boardwalk on 02/23/2001 in round 2 at 4:47. That was the last person Sherk finished in the UFC. But there are a lot of good fighters that are finishers that Sherk has beaten. I do agree that his finishes have been poor in the UFC. However, he has a very impressive resume, including other organizations.

He won the majority of his fights by submission or TKO. I think if B.J. gives him an opening, which is not likely, Sherk will finish him.

  62. Adam N

    March 15, 2008 at 3:08 am

You see he can finish his opponents by strikes or submission. agree with you all that the UFC fights may not be the most impressive perfomance by sherk when it comes to submissions and knockouts but in a fight like this i think he will do everything to destroy penn before 5 rounds.

But we will see who the winner will be, they are both good fighters but my favorit is Sherk becouse he got the same attitude as myself and likes to train very very hard.

  63. danedrebin

    March 15, 2008 at 6:13 am

look up those fighters u listed off's records and their accomplishments… sherk has a deceiving record. karo, diaz, florian and franca are about the only ones worth mentioning. bj's faught far stiffer competition imo

  64. little bit

    March 16, 2008 at 2:00 am

I respect your opinion, but I have watched several of the other fights. Some of them are really intense. Sherk got himself into some trouble and had to fight out of it. Yes, he fought some nobodys, but not all of B.J.'s fights have been against superstars either. I just can not wait until this fight really happens.

if you guys are going to agrue pleast at least make a point with something to back it. anyway the moron about bj and his hawaiian sovereignty, you have no idea what that is about so unless you go find out about the topic you should shut your mouth because you're dumb. and yes i do know about it because im a white boy the grew up in hawaii for 22 years of my 24 year old life… so yeah ive talked about it. so the talk about records. sherk. who has he beat? his UFC record is 6-2…not great, but if he beat anyone in a non UFC fight that is a somewhat big name please educate me. as far as BJ, so he only has wins. but lets look at his losses. jens (former champ) hughes (former champ) gsp (former/current champ)…….now who was #4 the guys saying sherk will win prob dont know so i guess ill tell them Lyoto Machida (yes the same light heavyweight that is going to fight tito on the same card, also a bigger stronger fighter with an undefeated record…beacuse it matters so much) also bj lost that fight by decision went 3, 5min rounds. and why cant bj RNC sherk? is that not how he finished hughes? sherk cant have too much of a bigger neck than hughes, if it even is. anyway all im saying is if you are going to say something please make a point and a record or "his cardio" is not a point, back it up.

once again as long as both fighters stay more or less healthy bj will win the fight and for all the ones that love to talk crap please email me @ awsk8tr@msn.com i know you will if sherk wins, but when penn wins dont be a punk like sherk, send me some something along the lines of "you were right daddy"

  67. STEVEO

    March 25, 2008 at 10:44 pm

I am with Tom, the proof is in the poodin if the only guys you have lost to are former/current champs and a undefeated light heavy its pretty safe to say that you are a legit fighter, but at the end of the day we will all find out in a few weeks, Penns a great fighter but his conditioning has always been questionable and shreks training albeit loaded with juice (not orange or apple) is one of the most heralded in all the sport, to me thats what it is going to come down to, who gets gassed first, either way should be a great fight, lets hope.

  68. Achilles

    March 26, 2008 at 2:11 am

STEVEO and TOM are right. Didn't GSP break SHERKS nose in like 3 place a couple years ago. If sherk passes the piss test this time he his gonna get tapped. Sherk has beaten only lower level opponents. And for any one who doesn't understand juice the steroid it self helps your recovery time so you can pump iron for like 5-6 hours at a time with out getting tired or having the next day agonizing pain that SUPPOSED to come with it that is why steroids are only perscribed to old people or those with cripling injuries or illnesses. Every crack that people make on sherk he deserves

  69. STEVEO

    March 26, 2008 at 3:38 am

I am also going with achilles on this one, to me hes barry bonds, yeah they may not have enough to get him nailed but you got got with the lid to the cookie jar in your hand not the cookie. GUILTY. he does deserve every bit of trouble he gets into and all the criticsm but lets be fair Hermes franca wa ALSO inplicated for banned supstances so in theory if you think about it, it was a fair fight in my book, and I think that fight could have gone either way. Hes not the only one who was juicing, I have my own theories, look at Cro Cop when he fought in pride and look at him in UFC, a fair size difference, hmmmmmm. If it isnt yet it will become a problem in the sport. Has anyone figured out what Paulo is in rehab for yet?

The Franca fight was completely fair because both of them cheated. But JUICE or no Juice Fighting isn't about curls and deadlifts. Look at ANDERSON SILVA he look anorexic and he is the best fighter on the planet. BJ looks like a regular small guy but is still the best LIGHTWEIGHT on the planet and should take Sherk out

  71. tom

    March 26, 2008 at 11:56 am

To say it was a fair fight because they both took steroid isnt really true. not all steroids are the same. franca got busted for dromostanolone, its something alot of bodybuilds take to help cut weight and stay lean. franca said he took it because of a bad injury to his ankle i think. he said it happend 8 weeks out. but i really dont think thats true. i think he prob had a problem cutting weight and he used it to help. because dromostanolone can be out of the body 10 days after you stop using it, from what i read. and also so many other steroid could of been used to help with the injury way better than dromostanolone. so i think he wasnt gonna make weight so he took it within a week or so of the fight just to make weight. but thats just what i think. he still cheated tho and gets what he gets i dont feel bad for him at all, but at least he was a man and said yes i did it. as for sherk im not saying he for sure did steroids but really think about it. its MMA he is just about the only guy that looks like that (in a size/ riped/ for his weightclass, type of way) and c'mon you cant tell me that he is the only guy in MMA with his type of training. really now think about it. i didnt read any of the case against him or any of his appeal, because i really didnt care to much. but the steroid he "used" was nandrolone one that help you build big stong muscles. very fitting of sherk's body type. so a roid that make you big and storng vs. a roid that makes you lean and cut they both cheated but if you wanted to take one to win a fight what would you take? now say it was a fair fight if they both took roids. but like i said im not saying sherk took them, the same as i would say O.J. never killed, but i just dont like sherk as a fighter, he is boring….look at his last two title fights. vs KenFlo (i was at the event) it was boring he was on top most the fight yet he had the second worst cut i can think of off the top of my head (we all know what the #1 cut was, bj vs joe if you dont) then his fight vs franca the only good part was franca sub attempts and knees. it almost seems like hes got that tim sylvia thing "im the champ and bigger and stronger im gonna just do what i need to win by dec. cuz i dont really want to fight" but thats just how i feel no need to comment back.

I can´t wait for this fight, it´s going to be interesting to see how it will end, i hope sherk wins but penn i a good submission guy.

I hope Sherk can use his strength to take him down, we know that he is stronger than bj and better condition as well.

But im not gonna say like a lot of you other guys say, that penn will finish him in the first round or that penn will do this and that to him.

Im not even going to say that sherk will do this and that to penn, we shall all see in May who will be the lightweight champion, sherk or penn? i dont know who.

  73. little bit

    March 26, 2008 at 11:35 pm

I think that this fight could be one of the best fights in UFC history, or it could end in the first round. No one can call this one. I hope Sherk wins, but B.J. is a very well rounded fighter and not easily beaten. This is not only going to be a good fight, but a good card as well…Tito vs. Machida, Jardine vs. The Ax Murderer, and the Penn vs. Sherk fight. I am more excited about this card than I have been in a long time! We will see who the lightweight champ is after the dust clears.

    March 26, 2008 at 11:44 pm

Achilles, GSP did break Sherk's nose. But remeber that this happened before Sherk moved down a division. Sherk was a very small welterweight. Sherk is undefeated as a lightweight, and I would not compare GSP to B.J. Penn. They are two very different fighters with two very different fighting styles. However, this fight will be just as fast paced as the Sherk GSP fight. Should be great!

  75. Achilles

    March 27, 2008 at 1:05 am

BJ penn (who is smaller than sherk) fought GSP and you can give him a slight, very slight, argument that he won the fight if you showed before and after pics of the fight GSP had bruises all over his face and had a hard time with BJ PENN. SHERK is not as good as GSP standing or on the GROUND and will not be able to contain PENN at all.

    March 27, 2008 at 2:35 am

Tom, I cannot agree more as far as the boring part goes, they need to change the rules to getsome of these asses that go out there to not lose instead of win. Thats why i love Kenflo, Houston, Liddell, Silva-thiago-wani-andersen, heath herring, they go out there and fight and try to end that shit. Its a fight, not a college wrestling match. i still say they need to make a fight that goes decision a draw or make the scoring different, I hate how a guy can be totally dominated for two rounds, barely win three and win a fight because he ekked one out.

  77. little bit

    March 27, 2008 at 3:22 am

Achilles, Penn is 5'9" and Sherk is 5'6" what do you mean when you say Penn is smaller? Were you talking about weight? I do agree that Penn did much better against GSP than Sherk, but this is a different fight. I respect your loyalty to Penn, but I have to stick with Sherk on this one.

  78. Achilles

    March 27, 2008 at 4:56 am

I don't even cheer for BJ PENN just when credit is deserved its give. Yes I mean weight. I have seen footage of SHERK training he cuts weighs normaly over 190 lbs and cuts down to 155 like a lot of fighters do. PENN has never weighed over 175 and he is still the favorite to win.

  79. roy

    March 27, 2008 at 6:03 am

i agree with achilles its not that i am a huge b.j. fan its just the way that i see it.sherks only chance to win is to out condition b.j. and i don't think b.j is going to come in out of shape for this or sherk could possibly hold him down the whole fight and not try any submissions or throw any punches cause that would leave him open for b.j. submisions.

  80. little bit

    March 28, 2008 at 3:00 am

Stylistically this is not a good fight for Penn. However we saw him completely dominate Joe Daddy in his last fight. Joe is a great wrestler. I agree that Penn will be ready for the fight. I am excited to see how this one turns out. I think we are all going to be surprised. B.J. has trained with Frank Mir. Mir said that even though he outweighed him by almost 100 lbs. he couldn;t submit him. I know B.J. is a phenominal fighter, but I don't know if B.J. can last all 5 rounds. If Sherk can hold on, he will win. Sherk has not been that impressive in the UFC, I have seen him in much more exciting fights in other organizations. This fight will be a good one.

  81. achilles

    March 28, 2008 at 5:22 am

Stylistically this is a perfect fight for PENN. finall y a guy with shorter limbs so he can out strike him on his feet. (not that he ever had a problem before) and another guy who is going to try to overpwer him which plays right into BJ's jujitsu. Old fights don't mean any thing now he has been in UFC excusively for almost 3 years now. CRO COP was a MONSTER ins PRIDE now in the UFC he is a stiff. This is not SHERKS fight.

  82. Joe B. Florendo

    March 30, 2008 at 12:56 am

Strength & Conditioning is important when it comes to fighting and I give that to Sherk, but…

Fighting is more about expressing yourself creatively.

BJ Penn has taken all the creative solutions of jujitsu's past great fighters and has evolved them & created new solutions specific to todays cage fighting.

BJ is a true fighter, he uses his brain, not just his brawn.

WIN or LOSE, BJ will bring somthing new to the table that will help real fighters all over the world think outside the box.

But Like I said in comment 45 & 57, my moneys on BJ Penn.

  83. Isaac

    March 30, 2008 at 6:50 pm

I'm gonna refer back to when GSP fought Sherk as opposed to when he fought BJ. (Btw GSP is one of my favorite fighters) GSP DOMINATED Sherk, no question. He busted his nose…he friggin' owned Sherk!!. When GSP fought BJ it was a different story. Did you see St. Pierre's face at the end of the fight?!! He looked like Carrie at the prom. Georges won by decision due to one too many take downs. The only criticism that Penn got was the whole conditioning thing and that he gassed. You all can say that Sherk didn't belong @ 170, well u could make the same argument for Penn but look at the results of both fights – Sherk got mauled by GSP and BJ gave him one of his greatest challenges.

Oh, and one more thing. All the stuff that I've read here about Sherk winning due to his great wrestling skills and his insane workouts…I read the same things about Joe Daddy before he fought BJ.

  84. Adam N

    March 30, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Can´t you stop repeating the GSP vs Sherk fight all the time, we all know that Penn did better than Sherk did against him but all the fight´s cant be the same.

I mean, why compare all the previous fight´s when we all know that this one wont be the same at all.

Ok Joe stevenson trained very hard for the fight against Bj but Sean Sherk got more experience than him,he´s older and he got the chans to see what Bj Penn brings out there, this fight wont be the same as penn vs stevenson.

Penn beat GSP (watch the fight 15 times like I have)! He won the first two rounds!! His technique on the ground, and his stand up are better than roid boy. Not only that he shut down Hughes both times. The second fight he was injured and couldn't breath…… nothing to do with conditioning. So, if he's better than two bigger guys that totally dominated Sherk, what is Sherk going to do???

i would like to see bj penn vs. anderson silva, or better yet, GSP vs. silva. and then silva vs. liddell in that order.

  89. Adam N

    March 31, 2008 at 10:20 pm

Anderson silva would destroy Bj penn, but that fight will never happen im afraid, but GSP vs silva seams more likely.

But i think that silva would win that fight too.

What do you think about kenny florian vs Joe lauzon on fight night april 2?

Personally i think this can be a great fight, both submission guys.

But i think Kenny will take it, he got to good stand up with those leathal elbows and a great ground game as well.

Joe´s ground game is very impressive, but in this fight i think that he faces an opponent with too much experience.

  90. Isaac

    April 2, 2008 at 6:07 pm

Whoa Adam, you're talkin about my top 3 favorite fighters here! yeah the Silva VS. Penn won't happen because there is no way BJ can put on 30 lbs. to get up to 185 and still be effective. Also there's no way Silva can drop down to 155 because he's already so tall and lean. Could they meet in the middle at 170? probably not. But Silva "destroying" BJ? I don't think it would be that bad. i just don't see Silva man-handling BJ like he did Rich Franklin.

I would be seriously drooling if they set up a GSP vs. Silva fight! I think GSP would have to go up to 185. That would be so sick! I couldn't even predict a winner because they both fuckin kick ass.

I wanted Joe Lauzon to win tonight but Ken Flo (hate his nick name) controlled the whole fight. he looked solid.

We're getting off topic here though! It's about BJ and Sherk… BJ Penn FTW!!

no offense Isaac but anderson silva would plow right through every person you just named off….liddell, GSP, Penn, i love all of these fighters but i dont think that anderson silva is going to lose a fight anytime in the near future unless he bumps up in weight

  92. Isaac

    April 3, 2008 at 4:03 am

yeah erik you're probably right. Anderson Silva is a bad ass MF.

I just watched Hughes vs Sherk fight, great fight even if Hughes dominated the fight on the ground.

But Sean did much better than Penn did against Hughes, in the second fight that is.

If Sherk can avoid getting a cut or caught in a choke earlie in the fight i think that he´ll win the fight.

Even if Penn is training hard for this fight i still think that he dont have the same strength and cardio as sherk have, he might last 3 rounds but the last 2 rounds might get to hard for him to avoid sherk´s brutal takedowns.

That´s what i think, but i guess we all have to wait for the fight to see who the winner will be.

  96. Kash

    April 24, 2008 at 5:31 am

If Sherk tries to finish instead of wrestling points out of his opponent it could be a great fight. Other than that, he couldn't finish Ken Flo or Hermes Franca and just seemed happy wearing them out.

  97. Joe B. Florendo

    April 29, 2008 at 12:45 pm

I just have a feeling that BJ will show Sherk something that he will not know how to react properly to. Everytime BJ fights his jujitsu evolves into something even more lethal and direct!

Sherk will definately have his hands full!

  98. Nicks

    April 29, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Kash & Derek Right on. BJ been saying he got just enough cardio to put Sherk away but that doesn't sound like BJ is training hes endurance to much. I pulling for the prodigy of course. Unless BJ doesn't get takin down which is possible but not likely, Sherk doesn't have anything else to threatin BJ with. BJ has the stand-up/submissions and the raw talent over Sherk.

  99. Adam N

    April 30, 2008 at 2:46 am

Sherk vs Florian, that was a good fight.Look at Florian now,he´s one of the best fighters in the lightweight division,if he (and i think he will) defeats Roger huerta the titlefight is not far away.

The reason i brought Kenny Florian up is becouse Sean Sherk beat him, and Kenny is great bjj and stand up guy but couldn´t handle Sherks takedowns.

Some of you keep saying that Bj Penn did better against GSP than Sherk did, thats right but that was a long time ago now.

He beat Nick diaz, Bjj brownbelt, Kenny Florian Bjj black belt and Hermes Franca also a great Bjj fighter.

Even if Bj Penn have improved his cardio i still think that the fight against Sherk might be to much for him.

If Sherk can avoid Penn´s submissions in the first 2 rounds i think that he will break him after 3 rounds.

  100. little bit

    April 30, 2008 at 8:16 am

I have to agree with Adam. Sherk has definitely shown that he can handle himself against great BJJ fighters. Speaking of the Nick Diaz fight, Sherk actually spent most of the time on his feet. He stood up with Diaz, and won. However, we could spend years comparing Penn and Sherk. We will all just have to wait a little longer to find out what is really going to happen. These kinds of fights can turn in a second. I hope B.J. is ready, but I think the belt will go to Sherk. Regardless, it will be a good fight!

  104. rhys

    May 4, 2008 at 10:46 pm

i think it will be a close fight with alot of clinching against the cage, and sherk being in bjs guard pulling out of submissions. bjs best bet to drop sherk on his ass is to use his lightning hands, he will probably expend too much energy trying to take him down. If bj can get sherk on his back, sherk is going to be in alot of trouble, BUT hermes couldnt hold him down for more then 20 seconds, so it could be a test for bj. If sherk takes him down, he needs to avoid penns rubber guard and keep his posture high at all times, regularly throwing off short elbows and punches, and using the momentum of the strikes to try and pass, he will likely be unsuccessfull, but he at least needs to try if he doesnt want to be stood up. To win this, bj needs to stay off of the cage and circle, keep a good distance from sherk and throw jabs and right hands, time when sherk is going to shoot and hit him hard with a cross or a knee, and use this to either put sherk on his back or take his back. If penn takes sherks back, sherk might as well tap out there and then because bjs back control is absolutely world class. Joe Daddy is the only one that comes to mind that was able to escape his back mount, but he is a phenomenal grappler himself. my prediction, sherk via unanimous decision. penn will impose his will in the earlier rounds but sherk will still get takedowns, eventually penn will get frustrated from being on his back for so long, he will try and stand up but sherk will hold him down, and then sherks vastly superior gas tank will be proven, penn will gass and be very passive for the rest of the fight, and sherk will lay on top and throw elbows and punches. sherk has proven he can avoid submission. The two title fights hes been in involved bjj blackbelts, and very skilled black belts at that.

  105. Adam N

    May 5, 2008 at 4:53 am

Great fight analys rhys! I agree 100%, i think Sherk wins by unanimous decision.

But just like you say, if penn get´s sherks back it might be over.

But we havn´t seen Sherk in that situation before, hopefully (and i think he does) sherk trains alot for that specific situation, but i guess his sparring partners dont have the same skills as Penn, but who got that?

I hate the waiting,i want too see this fight now.

    May 5, 2008 at 2:58 pm

Man… there is a whole lot of people here that are blind Zuffa fans. Yes, Sherk beat BJJ guys that are great, but Penn is a phenom! Sherk had a great pace in his fights, but the guy was on juice! It makes me angry that he won't fess up either. Like what is his argument??? No someone else pissed in there for me?!! Roid rage or not, Penn should win unless Sherk gets lucky. BJ deserves this title WAY more than that cheater anyway.

  107. Seane J

    May 5, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Oh yeah…. SHERK SHOULD NOT EVEN BE FIGHTING FOR THE TITLE!!! Cheaters should fight Melvin Guillard or something. Or better yet, Sherk should start with Clementi. Sherk looks like Shrek…

    May 23, 2008 at 1:33 pm

wow we have alot of bj haters in this one ok first of all matt hughs is a way more talented and powerful wrestler then sherk is or ever will be and you all saw what penn did to hinm in fight 1 and 2 if hughs couldn't get penn to the ground how will sherk yes penn did have a lazy training method befor and he beat hughs with that same method by pure unadulterated fighting ability. second when penn fought gsp 4 months after gsp demolished sherk penn won the stand up and gsp was barley able to take penn down now here is the situation penn can find a training partner to mimic sherk but sherk will never be able to find a bjj artist who would ever come close to bj's skill set.

and as for the thing with bj wanting sovereignty for hawaii if you were to do your homework on how the hawaiian islands were made part of the great united states you would understand what he is talking about they stole the land from the hawaiians assasinated the king and hels the queen prisoner in her own castle till she fell ill and died so do your homework befor you comment about shit you have no clue about

also penn has been training all out since he lost to hughs so cardio shouldn't be a factor also franca should have won the fight with sherk but also judges most of the time are retarded

  111. kom34

    May 23, 2008 at 2:43 pm

i agree that sherk shouldn't even be fighting for the title. not just for mma but for him. if he doesn't want to be booed for fights to come then he should have just had at least one tune up fight. at least that shows some type of punishment.

i think penn is going to come into the fight in the best shape of his life. i'd never count sherk out because he is a freak, but i hope he looks to finish with some ground and pound. i don't think he will win the stand up or a bjj game with penn.

this has been a long time in the making and i'm sick of chatting. i'm ready to see this thing already.

  112. Isaac

    May 23, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Well said, "true mma fan!" I agree with everything you said. I just got through re-watching all of Sherks UFC bouts and i have to say I wasn't impressed with his fights at all. To me he's just not on the same level as Hughes, GSP, and certainly not BJ. He is a tough bastard and a good fighter but not a great fighter. BJ is gonna own Sherk.

  113. Adam N

    May 23, 2008 at 9:31 pm

I dont agree with you guys.

Bj Penn won by submission over Matt Hughes in the 1st fight and almost in the 2nd, but Sean Sherk got better submission defens than Matt hughes.

Not only did Bj Penn submit Hughes but GSP did and Dennis Hallman aswell.

Sherk wont get caught in a submission as easy as hughes, thats for sure.

Matt Hughes might be a better wrestler in ww but i think that Sean sherk is better in lw than ww.

We dont have to wait much longer to see who the winner will be.

Sean Sherk by TKO in round 4.

  114. Isaac

    May 24, 2008 at 3:41 pm

OOhhh…I love this part, this is where I get to rub BJ's win in the face of all the Sherk lovers! Like I've done in his last couple fights.

Now do you guys realize that BJ is a fuckin great fighter?!! Now do you realize that just because you train really really hard and have insane workouts does NOT mean you'll win against an opponent with phenomenal skills and natural fighting ability?!

BJ controlled the whole fight and was winning every round. The knee to the head was sweet and the fact that BJ called the fight himself and said "He's done!" was icing on the cake.

I know a lot of people don't like BJ because they say he's cocky. He's all about getting in the head of his opponent! It's part of the game! As you can see after all his fights he's cool with the other guy.

    BJ Penn FTW!!!!!

  115. Adam N

    May 24, 2008 at 10:23 pm

I must say Bj penn impressed me in this fight, he showed that he got the heart for the first time against a top fighter.

Im sorry for Sean Sherk, but he waited to long for the takedown, wich he is best at.

He was afraid to fail with his takedowns in this fight, wich i can understand cuz Bj penn could get his back.

He wanted to wait to the 4th round to take him down, but that uppercut and that knee stopped that.

Bj really used his reach advantage in this fight, cuz i think that was his only chance of winning the fight.

He never really tried to take Sherk down once in this fight, cuz we all know that Sherk is stronger than Penn on the ground.

It will be very interesting to se if Penn will get his rematch against GSP.

If that happens, it might be the top 5 best fights in the UFC history.

GSP is one of my favorit fighter so i have to go with him in that fight.

  116. Rizzel

TOLD YA'LL (comment 86)!!!!!!!! If you have any knowledge of the stand up game, you knew what would happen. If you watched his fights against GSP, and Hughes, you knew what would happen. Now, if your name in "ADAM N" or "little bit" you haven't a clue as to what you're talking about.

Seriously, look at Sherk vs. GSP, then look at BJ Penn vs. GSP………… What were ya'll thinking.

As for a rematch against GSP….. Penn will take that one as well. He won it the first time (judges were idiots int hat one). How GSP got the "W" on that one on is still beyond me. Rounds 1 and 2 were 100% Penn.

I knew from the start that Bj Penn would be hard to take down, and his stand up is better than sherks cuz of his reach advantage.

So Rizzel you say that me and little bit dont have a clue of what we were talking about?

Well both me and little bit knew that Bj Penn would use his reach advantage in this fight to win, i dont think we said anything about Bj not being the better stand up guy.

Bj Penn did controll this fight but he didn´t destroy Sherk like a lot of you other guys said, Bj Penn winner by submission in the 1st round.

    Penn vs Stevenson deja vu.

That didn´t happen, cuz Bj Penn knew that Sean Sherk is stronger than him on the ground and thats why he choose not to try to take the fight to the ground.

Sherk is a great fighter, but to beat Penn you must have better stand up.

Thats why i think that a fight between Penn and GSP could be one of the best fights in the UFC.

Maybe you are right, perhaps Dana wants to wait for this fight to happen, maybe some time next year.

I am wasn't really a big Penn fan but wow. Sherk had no business even being in the ring. As far as going for the take down goes, I don't think it would have mattered because he should have tried as opposed to eating about 3,000 jabs. AND SERIOUSLY IF YOU DONT HAVE ANYTHING INTELLIGENT TO SAY JUST DONT COMMENT!!!

GSP and Penn would be a great fight pure athletism against pure skills. would be a hell of a fight to see. P.S. Fitch doesn't have a prayer.
