Former UFC middleweight champion, Rich “Ace” Franklin will make the move to light heavyweight to take on TUF veteran Matt Hamill at UFC 88 on September 6 from the Phillips Arena in Atlanta, Ga, according to MMARated.

Franklin is coming off a solid win over Travis Lutter at UFC 83 in Montreal. A move back to his old wight class was rumored after he was completely overwhelmed by the UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva for the second time.

Matt Hamil is also coming off a win over Tim Boetsch at UFC Fight Night 13 this past April.

Franklin will struggle with Hamil! He's a big, strong 205… I see Franklin getting stopped by Ground n' Pound in the 3rd…

Franklin has no future at 205 (especially with Anderson Silva moving up…)

I like Rich, but I can't see him competing with the top tier fighters like Wandi, Rampage, Chuck, Shogun, T Silva, Griffin, Machida(already kicked his Ass)

I suppose, there are some potential good match ups with the lower 205 fighters like.. Evans, Jardine, Bonner, Heath….

But, in the end Franklin will end up a gate keeper (at best) like in the MW division…

Maybe Rich… should go to Affliction or Elite XC and fight for a title… He's between a rock and a hard place!

yeah if he wants a belt he will have to leave the ufc, i see him moving back and forth and just looking for good fights, he won't beat the top guys at 205 but i think he's got this one.maybe if anderson does good at 205 or goes for the belt he might stay up there and that would open up the m.w. belt but unlikely.

i dont like this fight for rich at all..Matt hamill is the most under raded fighter in the UFC he should easy be in the top 10 he has Olypic wresling and he is strong and a very hard work.. i think Matt could kill rashed or A Sivla or W Silva and forestt…

rich will get stopped by ground and pound in the first or 2 if matt comes in and looks just for the takedowns..

    July 2, 2008 at 3:23 am

i don't think he could beat any of those guys, tom maybe rashad but i'm not even sure about that, he still has alot to learn, maybe one day he does have great wrestling but needs to improve the rest of his game witch is getting better but not there yet.

idk i know he would beat W Silva and Rashed… Rashed is weaker and smaller and they have the same game but Matt is World Class wresler and rashed isnt.. Silva would lose because he doesnt really have good takedown Def and i dont think he would be very good off the back..

this sounds like a good one..hmm? i dont see him handling Wanderlai .. i think Wandi would maul him…could be wrong…

Rasheed….after being hit a few times

would take him down and lay there..

tom wandy has already beat better wrestlers rampage and henderson and both of them are better strikers than hamill,he is good but still a long way from the top.

Hsmill is getting much better but this is a step up from Tim Boetch.I still think Matt will prove to a lot of people that he is for real if he candoinate rich. He could do it with his wrestling im just wondering who can strike better. Rich has done good striking but against who? This is a good fight.

  9. roy

    July 2, 2008 at 4:44 am

if hamill can win it will be his wrestling, his striking is no where near franklins.

    July 2, 2008 at 4:50 am

Franklin dont have superb striking bro. You will see how improved hamill is. I think hamill can hurt franklin take him down and pound him out

  11. roy

    July 2, 2008 at 4:58 am

thats what i am saying if he take him down he could win maybe, but standing up i don't think so, franklin is a good striker he won his fight with his hands and out hit everyone(not that they where all great fighters) intell anderson showed up. the good thing steve is we will see, i like hamill better but i don't think he will win but if he does great.

i love rich and i hate to say it but i do think matt will walk throw him..

rich has better hands speed and kicks but the power goes to matt..

On the ground Matt will be stronger and has good ground and pound and is a Olypic 2 time gold metals, but rich aint to bad of his back, its going to be a good fght

    July 2, 2008 at 5:33 am

whodini you really think rashed could beat or even takedown matt?? you are crazy matt is stronger bigger and way better of a wreslter..

    July 2, 2008 at 5:43 am

tom matt has never been to the olympics, he won a gold and silver in the special olympics and is a 3 time college champ in devision 3, he hasn't beat anyone that good yet his striking is not that good yet, but this fight will show you right where he is at i beleave.

  15. tom

    July 2, 2008 at 5:45 am

i didnt know it was for special olympics..Matt isnt a really good strike and i was never saying that i do think rich can win if he keeps it up idk if he can

  16. roy

    July 2, 2008 at 5:49 am

like i said this is a good fight to see where he is at, he could still improve alot so who knows how far he will go in the future

  17. steve

    July 2, 2008 at 6:13 am

the special olympics is no joke guys. It has some pretty good athletes to say the least and dont think matt cant out wrestle almost anyone in the sport.

  18. roy

    July 2, 2008 at 6:19 am

i think its great and it was the deaf olympics, but still it was not the olympics and he was at a devision3 school, there is better wrestlers in the ufc than him but he is definetly a great wrestler

i think people arent giving rich enough credit. he's lost to two people in his entire career. rich will be top ten in 205 very soon if he wants to. i dont see hamill beating him. he could lay n pray his way to victory but rich is a former champion and i think he will find a way to win. seeing how he does in this fight will tell us a lot of how he would fare against bisping too. this one is a hard one to call tho because hamill is a very under rated fighter and should be top ten aswell.

i like hamill but rich is on a whole other skill level. take anderson out of the equation and how good has rich been against everyone else.

    July 2, 2008 at 3:12 pm

matt is tough…he took a little punishment from tim but came thru…nasty cut on his lip in that fight…this will be his first test…im not counting rich out…hes lost to machida and silva…two very good technical fighters…rich has been at 205 before so it wont be anything new for him i dont think…if he can keep it standing i think he'll beat matt….but if matt can get him on the ground he'll over power him…i'd say 60/40 in favor of rich franklin for me

  22. DanP

    July 2, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Franlin will never be top 10 at 205… here are 10 reasons why…

    1. Rampage

    2. Wandi

    3. Chuck

    4. Shogun

    5. Mancida

    6. Thiago Silva

    7. Anderson Silva (at 205)

    8. Forrest Griffin

    9. Brandon Vera (at 205)

    10. Sokoduo

And outwith the UFC there's Tito Ortiz, Ricardo Arona, little Nog and Overeem,

I like Rich Franklin,… but I don't see him making any impact at 205 in the UFC!

  23. roy

    July 3, 2008 at 3:40 am

i think dan henderson will beat rich at mw or lhw too

  24. tom

    July 3, 2008 at 4:10 am

i would like to see rich vs Dan in wm very bad..

Also i dont think rich will make the top 10 in light heavy

  25. steve

    July 3, 2008 at 5:25 am

Yeah you say rich has only lost to 2 people but yet he those are the only fighters that are considered to be in the top ten that he has fought I believe. And also saying he has been a champion doesnt really matter to me b/c he really hadnt beat an elite fighter or faced one in the UFC and the middleweight division was so weak when he won the belt that you cant even think that he has a chance in the 205lb division. nderson has a chance to do good but I dont even see him ever holding the blet. So Rich definetly doesnt have a chance to succeed in 205. He dropped down from 205 to fight even the middleweight division and it dont make since for him to move to 205 especially since the guy he cnt beat and the reason for him moving up is mving up at the same time as him. Rich could make a good fight with the winner of Leben vs Bisping and or Henderson at Middleweight.

i don't think rich is going to be champ again at 205 or 185 but whats he supposed to do retire? he will probally move back and forth just looking for good fights.i still think he is #3 in mw behind anderson and dan and alot further down at 205.

I am hoping that Hamill take this. He is a good guy with one hell of a heart!

  29. steve

    July 3, 2008 at 12:40 pm

Well yeah but if the UFC got some middleweight talent from other organizations then the middleweight division would be a lot better and Franklin could rejuvenate his career but if they dont then he lacks the match ups to earn top dollar and should go to somewhere like Elite Xc and fight on national T.V. against Lawler or even get picked up as free agent to join Affliction. I would love to see him fight Belfort.

    July 3, 2008 at 4:31 pm

i think hamill has a powerful right hand but rich is gunna pick him apart then hamill will take him down and not do anythign when it gets there. i like hamill and hope he does well in this sport but look at his mma record its 5-1. he hasnt faced anyone of rich's caliber do u really think rich is jsut gunna get taken down and get pounded out? rich's gaurd is too good, he has great sprawl and brawl, he's good at getting back to his feet, and hamill just isnt that devistating when he get people to the ground. i think franklin is way better than bisping and while i think hamill won the fight against bisping he didnt do much after he got his takedowns. i could be wrong but i believe rich's experience will be too much for matt.

  31. tom

    July 3, 2008 at 4:49 pm

Dane Drebin i like the points that you point out and you make me look at the fight a little different but idk rich might has a good guard but idk matt is very strong for 205 and every time he fight he looks so much better so idk .. the fight would go either way

  32. dane drebin

    July 3, 2008 at 6:00 pm

thanks tom ya both are great fighters i could see either one winning im not counting hamill out at all. i will be sad to see either lose to be honest. if i had to bet i would put my money on rich because i just dont see himill pounding rich to a stoppage i dont think his gnp is as good as people say is all.

  33. steve

    July 3, 2008 at 8:18 pm

ok and the people that Rich has fought and been able to beat are not on the level of matt hamill either. Hamill will prove to be too much for Rich and then u guys will see how overrated u guys had him.

    July 4, 2008 at 1:46 am

I don't know steve, I think I agree with Dane. Both are great. I know for a fact that Hamill will definately give Franklin a run for his money, but I think Franklin has a lot more mental game than hamill. Hamill is still kind of young in the sport. He has absolutely amazing potential though.

  35. steve

Only one thing left to say now. We'll see.

franklin at 205 is a stronger franklin……… he will win. How about franklin ground and pound to stoppage 2nd round.

  37. Mitso

    July 30, 2008 at 4:33 am

I don't know why everybody is putting a top 10 list that supposedly Rich Franklin can't clear. First of all Rich has competed in LHW before and only had one loss in it (to Lyoto Machida). Don't forget that Rich beat Chuck Lidell fairly easily too; and also probably the best guy if not in the top 3 in LHW is Lyoto Machida so anybody would have a tough time with Machida, not just Rich. Rich has been there before and he definitely has the tools to win a lot in that division.

I am saying he can crack the top ten but I really dont think he has it in him to be champ at that level or at middleweight unless spider vacates title to stay at 205 if he ever wins it there. He is more of a gatekeeper at middleweight now, after those two embarrassments he would have to win at least 5 or 6 in a row to get a shot again I would say. Also How is it in the list above that Hendo doesnt manage to crack the top of that list granted he lost his title to rampage but still a top notch guy. The crazy thing is you have forrest at like 8 which may be true, its nuts that the guys who is the champ doesnt look that dominate at all.

roy, it's not special Olympics….it's DEAF Olympics and that's huge different. Be careful what you say too.
