UFC 97: Brock Lesnar vs Frank Mir 2 Possible in April

UFC President Dana White mentioned to FightersOnly magazine, that the highly anticipated UFC heavyweight unification bout between Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir could happen as early as April, possibly at UFC 97.

“Mir took little damage in his fight with Nog, and Lesnar wants to fight him soon, so April may be the time and place for that. It will be good,”

White also called the series of heavyweight fights a “Tournament”. The UFC heavyweight belt was broken up after Randy Coutures left the UFC only to return and lose his belt to Brock Lesnar at UFC 91.

STEVE that pic at the top of this sure oooks like a kneebar. but im sure ur right it was the dreaded FOOTLOCK! a move u say cant do any damage right? i guess the ufc website that says mir won by KNEEBAR is wrong. i guess every new article that says mir won by KNEEBAR is wrong. and i guess sherdog fight finder that has every mma fighters wins and loses and how they won or lost is wrong aswell. if you think mir couldnt have seriously injured brock with that knee bar ur dilusional.

When I saw it the first time I thought it was a footlock too. Anyone who's ever been caught in that, it is such a powerful move. You can really hurt someone by cranking even just one inch. I've had a small pop on my knee from an ankle lock before and it happened with just a little crank.

But Mir did win by transitioning into a kneebar. It takes a while of cranking to actually pop someones knee out because the knee is so strong. But if you do that then its safe to say the other guy will never quite be the same. Its one move that I hate to see someone trying to be brave in so I'm glad Brock tapped quickly.

still waiting for steve to admit lesnar lost by kneebar

Calm down Dane. We all know ur a badass. I dont really care what he tapped out by. He still lost and if Bas Rutten says a footlock doesnt do much damage and that it is more painful than anything ill go with that. Since he is an expert in submissions. Maybe it was a kneebar. Like I said it dont change that he lost. And we lose agin:)

Steve…Seriously what makes you so sure that Lesnar will Lose…If the last fight was an indication it was the Lesnar demolished Mir in his 2nd MMA fight ever and first in the UFC with only 1 years worth of training..Sure he lost via KneeBar but as i always say there is not shame in tapping to a sub..and if it wastn for the Ref Stoppage who knows who would of won but based upon how the fight was going i would have to say that the Ref stoppage clearly went in Mir's favor and turned things around for him and then caught a ROOKIE at the time in a Kneebar before being creamed for 80 secongs of the fight. Lesnar has since gotten extremely more confident in every aspect of MMA although he is still new to the sport being said based upon last fight on what occurred…what makes you so sure Mir can stand with Lessnar? As he sure stood up to him in the first fight didnt he…LOL what makes you so sure he can stop the takedowns? as he sure did that too didnt he…LOL…what makes you so sure Lesnar will again make a rookie mistake…Not likely but could happen…the only Way Mir will win is by Submission and due to the previous fight i think Lesnar will be on the look out for those and be more cautious when exploiting his limbs…Shit Lesnar wins by Knee Bar on Mir…now wouldnt that be revenge…but seriously that could happen but more realisticly 2nd round G&P i look for lesnar to be alot more calm and do the same to Randy in his fight pick his spots and take down at will and G&P and when things get a bit out of his comfort level…he stands up and backs off…letting the fight go back to the feet as Mir can not stand with Lesnar…and i would be shocked to see him do so and take punch after punch without going down. Mir is extremely out of his realm in this fight just like the last fight except this time the guy he is facing has alot more skill and calmness to him than before..not to mention if Brock trains with Randy…thats just more icing on the cake per say…I just dont see how you think Mir is going to walk all over Lesnar…please explain…i need a good laugh.

i dont think any of you have really considered how much quicker mir is than lesnar and how much more powerful mir has become over the past year watch his fights you will see. and mirs black belt in bjj woill beat lesnar on the ground anyday. however im not saying that mir is defiantly going to win as he likewise has become a much better fighter and is not likely going to want to take the fight to the ground and even though mir is strong he still cant match the power of lesnar. it will be a good fight

  10. dane drebin

    January 13, 2009 at 2:52 pm

tim- pigs will fly the day lesnar beats mir with a knee bar. its just not gunna happen.

Kevin- what evidence do you have that mir is faster than lesnar? lesnar is freakishly fast for his size. if he was so slow he wouldnt have knocked herring on his ass, mir on his ass, and knock randy out. if he was so slow they should have seen his strikes commin and dodged them but none of them did. he's hardly trained in mma for a few years and he is smashing people its pretty impressive. mir has 1 knockout besides nog in his entire career he's not some elite striker. i just dont see why u think mir is faster. how is he faster in what aspect? im sure hes faster with subs but thats about it. if u dont believe me go look up his times in the vikings training camp he was like top two in everything. no way mir would have even been accepted in the vikings training camp he's way too slow. i can see steves arguement for mir winning cuz it actually makes sense since he has subbed mir before but saying mir is "much quicker" than lesnar is kind of laughable.

  11. Tim

    January 14, 2009 at 1:35 am

I meant the kneebar as a joke…it would be histaricle if it happened though. I agree how do you think Mir is quicker than Lesnar when everyone compares Lesnar's speed to a lightweight? Keep in mind in Vivking training camp he was about 300lbs and running the 40 pretty damn fast..the only reason he got cut as the last man on the team to be…was because of his motorcycle accident and he could train so they had to let him go but the viks felt that within another year he could play in the NFL so they wanted him to go to the no defunct NFL europe and play but lesanr turned it down as he wanted to play with the best and he already proved he could. Anyways thats off the subject…seriously Mir will lose unless he subs lesnar again but due to the scenario and game plan i dont think we will see a sub happening at all.

In a fight, size does not matter. Its about technique. If anyone does grapple or do mma yea size and strength makes up for technique TO AN EXTENT! Mir is better on the ground over all due to experience and technique. Mir's stand up game is better as well. Doing Karate for most of your life makes anyone a dangerous striker. Brock is good a wrestling i will give him that. But i think he cant hang with frank mir in MMA. All around i have mir winning by knockout or submission. O and take a look at brocks last fight. He was wore out in the second round. To much muscle inquires alot of oxygen. Brock will him self out as well. He has gone 5 rounds with someone of mir's Calibur. All around i give the fight to mir. Unllessss brock hits him with a lucky punch like he did with cotour. And yes i said lucky punch cause that punch grazed randy and hit him on the right spot at the right time. But thats what happened in a fight. Frank mir =winner! :)

  13. roy

    January 16, 2009 at 4:35 am

there wasn't anything lucky about that punch, he threw it and hit him, your right it grazed him and still knocked him out.i don't see mir winning the stand up with brock he didn't in there first fight and brock has only gotten better, mir could win by sub but i dout it.

  14. Tim

    January 16, 2009 at 6:02 am

I agree Roy, Seriously where do some of you think that Mir is some sort of Godlike Fighter…Mir has the worst conditioning and will not be in better shape overall than Brock will…you obviously have not seen Brock train not to mention he was known in his college wrestling days for being the best conditioned HWGHT. Brock was of breathing hard of course but that doesnt mean he was tired, any fighter would breat hard and let me introduce you to a little secret it having muscle pushes oxygen through the body faster. Bottom line Mir is not in the same league as lesnar is come conditioning and wrestling, and striking well the mans gotten alot better and proved that Mir cant stand with him in his first fight and he grazed Randy with a shot and knocked him flat cold so that shows the power and speed. Mir could win by Sub but its not likely as thats how Lesnar lost before and dont you think he is going to be well prepared for that and have a killer game plan to avoid such another rookie mistake. Lesnar wins 2nd round TKO

    January 20, 2009 at 7:56 am

hey ali i guess if size doesnt matter then we dont need the lightweight, light heavyweight, or heavyweight divisons. lets just put them all togather and see what happens. sorry but size DOES matter. i mean i dont really see mir throwing lesnar around the ring…after all his hair might get messed up

  16. thebigguy

    January 20, 2009 at 7:59 am

and on the point of mir being some awesome guy on his feet….id like to see him in a boxing match with randy. my moneys on randy

  17. Tim

    January 20, 2009 at 8:51 am

And if Randy is training Brock…watch out….thats all i have to say…i hope that does happen it would surely put some more skill in brocks overall game.

  18. fedor24

    January 20, 2009 at 9:01 am

You are right Tim. Randy's gameplanning and fight preparation are what made him the champion he was. if Brock can emulate that Lesnar will be unstoppable with the current crop of UFC heavys.

  19. Tim

    January 20, 2009 at 9:17 am

Either way brock will be a force but as you said it help emulate his career to a whole new level, Randy is legen and having a legen teach a man that was or is very similar to him minues the obvious ones will only benefit the champ…it would be a very smart move to move camp to Xtreme Couture if only for 4wks….if not longer

  20. steve

    January 20, 2009 at 10:44 am

Blah blah blah Tim posting alot on a lesnar blog no way!

We get it no matter what prediction u make r wrong if u dont say lesnar will win. Even tho he is just 3-1 and lost to Mir the first time. Lesnar just isnt and will never be well rounded. He is boring to watch also. LOL he charged Herring with his head down just like a bull. Lesnar gots one thing going for him. And its that hes built like a gorilla. Now I just wish someone would put him on a lie detector test and ask him if he used streoids lol.

  21. Someone rightly

    January 21, 2009 at 12:57 am

Mir-Lesnar is going to be one helluva awesome fight and maybe the fight that takes UFC mainstream…GLOBALLY(and not just Japan/Brazil).

I would say Frank DEFINITELY has the momentum going into the fight against Brock next year. But a lot of points to be noted in favour of both fighters make the next bout a must watch.

    1. Mir outclassed Nog like noone has. Seriously.

    2. Mir is much more better as a striker, boxer and in submission skills than Brock.

    3. Mir has won the previous bout against Brock.

    4. Mir is not 220 pounds like Couture was.

Now onto Brock Lesnar. I will address him with respect to Fedor who might..might fight him somewhere down the line.

Yes, Fedor is the best heavyweight in the world. But for all those who dislike Brock and they might have their reasons, they should know that Brock isn’t your average MMA fighter. Underestimate him you may, but I dont know too many guys who without submission skills, without striking or boxing skills would have made it as far as he has. Do you? Let’s not forget that when he faced Mir he almost knocked his lights out in his first UFC bout losing out in the end to what was a rookie mistake. Then, not too many guys would look good in defeat against Mir and then go on to beat Herring and Couture in only their 2nd and 3rd fights. Seriously.. for all those who say that Randy is an old man and had one year off plus a weight disadvantage should ask themselves whether other fighters would’ve been able to do any better against him. Brock Lesnar is a superb athlete with unparalleled conditioning and needless to say a genetic freak. Lastly, You can coach technique but you can’t coach strength and that’s why the arguments above that Lesnar in 2-3 years will be a much more complete fighter are very true.

There has also been talk of M1 and Affliction wanting to promote a fight between Fedor and Lesnar in collaboration with UFC. All I can say is that it makes NO sense for UFC or Dana to promote the Lesnar-Fedor card AT ALL. I will go on and say that even if M1 gives ALL the revenues to UFC there is not much logic to go for the fight. Brock is selling out events in a gargantuan way and has raised the PPV buy-rate of UFC as well as its merchandise..something acknowledged by Yahoo Sports too. So the guy is a veritable cash cow…. And if he loses to Fedor then that image and the revenue coming from it is really compromised. So essentially the fight doesnt make sense from a long term perspective. Fedor beating Lesnar would be an embarassment to UFC and would surely make a lot of viewers jump to M1 and Affliction. So not only do your No.1 guy lose credibility but the competition gets a serious leg up. UNLESS they can secure Fedor immediately after the fight, Dana cannot allow this fight to take place. Never.

  22. Tim

    January 21, 2009 at 1:53 am

First off i agree on most, except that Brock losing to Fedor would be detrimental to the UFC…the UFC was great without Brock and will continue on with or without him or any other top fighter…thats just how business and marketing works. Affliction and M-1 can try all they want but they will never be as big as the UFC…i am not syaing the ufc is the best out there but it sure is the most watched. Affliction will be done by years end if they dont make a profit in this Saturdays fight which based upon what i have heard on ticket sales and fighter salaries…i think its good to say that that they will not make a profit.

How can you say Lesnar is not well Rounded? Hmmm surely he is still very green but doesnt a wreslting base pretty much give you the well rounded base to begin learning and developing new skills…which he has done so…the man has very good boxing skills for someone with only what 3 years of training time now along with being considered a purple belt in BJJ, which honestly i would like to see a sub from him. The man has accomplished and has developed alot in only 4 fights. That comment about bull rushing Herring well if you review the fight you would know that he went for a high knee to the head so i dont know how you would say he had his head down and bull rushed him…get your facts strait…steve. LOL. THe mir lesnar fight you can say all you want the bottom line is take that rookie mistake out of the equation and Brock dominated Mir so whats to say this time around wont be the same since Brock has had a few more fights and alot more training to develop new and existing skills.

  23. Tim

    January 21, 2009 at 1:56 am

Bottom line Lesnar is still green and with time 2-3 more years he will be a very well rounded fighter.

  24. Someone rightly

    January 24, 2009 at 12:42 am

Tim, I agree with your points. Absolutely. But I never conjectured that the UFC will close down. You pointed out that the UFC will continue without him. Of course it will. It's run by very able people and has a roster which is often not given due credit for their outstanding pedigree. But I was saying that Brock has been selling out events easily and has also raised the PPV buy-rate. He is a compelling marketing point for them, something even admitted by Frank Mir. Therefore it follows that him losing would cause a considerable dent in UFC's 'prospects' to get more audiences. At stake here is the opportunity of going big time with a marketable athelete that Lesnar is. Not to mention the pulling of professional wrestling audiences who are coming in droves to watch him fight. So, the fight doesn't make much sense in the long term. And certainly noone would like their top guy to lose out to that of another promotion. The impact will only be negative.

  25. steve

    January 24, 2009 at 7:16 am

Tim Lesnar does not have a well rounded game. Stand up isnt just boxing. And did i watch the Lesnar vs Couture fight. Lesnars boxing is not good at all not only that but he cant kick. U build him up in ur head to where he is a favorite against anyone. He is not well rounded tim. He is also not the most athletic HW. AA ismush more athletic.Think about it. Can Lesnar even throw a high kick? Lesnar can wrestle and out muscle ppl. For Lesnars size of 270 he is the most athletic since there is only 1 guy actually close to him in strength and size in the ufc which is Shane Carwin. Lesnar will be able to beat a lot of guys up but if he wasnt 40 lbs more of muscle I think he would be going 50-50. I know thats an if factor but like I said its my opinion and I cant wait for u to tell me im wrong lol.

  26. dane drebin

    January 24, 2009 at 8:32 am

ya tim striking isnt just boxing lesnar has to learn low kicks and knees too oh wait he actually fucked heath and randy up with knees and landed low kicks too oops

  27. steve

    January 24, 2009 at 12:01 pm

Ya he looked really good standing against randy and ya he fucked heath herring up. NOT Dane ur a fucking idiot. He landed 1 punch on Herring that pretty much all he did the whole fight standing. The rest he just laid on top of him hammerfisting. And are u saying that he beat the shit out of Randy standing? He landed one punch. I think randy was winning the clinch and striking battle. Actually a lot of ppl think that but ur right he is awesome standing up dane and is a very well rounded fighter. NOT. LMAO I just wish u could see how stupid u sound.

  28. dane drebin

    January 24, 2009 at 12:41 pm

ya cuz i said all that steve???? i didnt say he looked amazing standing whered u get that from? you said all he does is box and i just said he uses knees very well too. in the clinch he was kneeing randy a lot and on the ground he was kneeing the fuck out of heath. and he landed a couple of good leg kicks on randy. i didnt say he was fucking up randy in the stand up alls im saying is he has more than strong punches he has a really good knees aswell. and he landed more than just a punch on randy he rocked him with a standing elbos aswell that was pretty impressive. now go wipe ur vagina.

I can think of only fighter who can beat Fedor: Brock Lesnar. Too bad, Fedor is not in the UFC and too many easy fighters in Afflication for him.

  30. roy

    January 30, 2009 at 7:06 am

aa and barnett are not easy fighters for him and most of the ufc guys would be easy too.

  31. Kash

    January 30, 2009 at 9:09 am

I agree that AA and Barnett are good competition for Fedor. Other than the KO it was looking like a good fight.

  32. steve

    January 30, 2009 at 9:54 am

Dane I guess u didnt see the lesnar vs couture fight. B/c couture was winning in the clinch and in the stand up. He got caught thats all. He landed some shots flush to lesnars face but doesnt have that much power in his hands. So go back watch the fight and you will see that. Dumbass.

  33. dane drebin

    January 30, 2009 at 11:23 am

lesnar's not a refined striker by anymeans couture has far better technique but for someone who is really new to the game he has proved a lot of the nay sayers wrong who said he was just gunna be giant boring wet blanket. i never said his clinch was better than randys but it was pretty even he kept landing good knees to randy's gut and he threw a good elbow standing that rocked randy. it was pretty even up until randy got caught. Randy was doing awesome for being so outsized. i love randy hes awesome. Lesnarss got really long reach and devastating power. his knees are brutal aswell thats all i was saying and thats all im gunna say im done with this.

  34. bgtl16

    February 2, 2009 at 12:54 pm

lesnar will dismantel mir he had him beat the first fight and let his inexperiance get the best of him. lesnar is hugery and wants to prove that he is the real deal.i just wish i could have seen him on the football field.

  35. Bill RIch

    February 26, 2009 at 7:41 am

You guys are crazy to think a fluke like Mir will beat Lesnar again, Lesnar definitely has the drive and he will most definitely want to avenge his only loss to Mir. I think in this fight you will witness Brock's strength and it will be way to much for him to handle. Brock Is the next big thing, and the future of the UFC heavyweight division, so after the fight all you Brock haters will be in a state of shock

  36. jimmy

    March 6, 2009 at 7:10 am

There is no way in gods green earth that brock will beat fedor. Standing fedor has the advantage and on the ground go watch all of his fights if your gonna say that. Now when brock gets more fights under his belt and more of an understanding of the game maybe, but right now there is no way. Fedor is barely human he has never lost a fight on one occasion he got a cut and the ref called the fight but fedor fought him again and beat the dog shit outta the guy. FEDOR IS THE BEST POUND FOR POUND FIGHTER just ask anyone he has fought they will tell you, you dont have to believe me.

    FEDOR FOR LIFE BABY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  37. yc

    March 6, 2009 at 7:23 am

I think we need to see brock pull out some slams, we all know he has the strength to pick up any HW out ther, lol that would be something to see….. brock picking up mir and knocking him out by slam hahaha.

  38. roy

    March 6, 2009 at 7:29 am

i agree with you on that jimmy brock is not ready for fedor and maybe never, fedor is hands down the best.

  39. jimmy

    March 6, 2009 at 2:07 pm

All dana has to do to set it up is pay the price for Fedor for 1 fight and we would all see what would happen, but dana dosent want to lose all the marketing he can get with brock still so he is gonna milk this golden lamb for everything it is worth like dana does to everyone of his fighters. Its all about marketing and whats selling now! Otherwise dana would have set up fedor and randy a long time ago he didnt have anybody under randy to market so he couldnt just give randy up at that time, but now he has brock thats why soon i see fedor vs randy in the near future.

I dont want anyone to get me wrong though and im not taking anything away from randy he is my second favorite heavyweight but its just the name of the game. It sucks but it is what it is.

  40. DantheMan

    March 16, 2009 at 3:45 am

you guys are crazy brock would get demolished by arlovski, barnett, carwin, id even like to see him fight someone low on the top 10heavyweights like Kongo cuz i dont think lesnar really has what it takes to beat most of these guys with more experiece.as for mir:Frank's better on his back than Lesnar is in guard or side control. lesnar has way more power but it was proved that power doesnt mean as much ass technique way back in the first few UFC (gracie). I could definitly see mir winning by KO as ridiculous as it sounds because his standup technique is improving to the point were the only thing wrong is hes still a lil slow. anyway we really need to see affliction and ufc meet so brock can fight more worthy opponents because i need to see if my theorys are correct.

  41. roy

    March 16, 2009 at 4:13 am

i agree with you to a point dan, styles make fights and i could see lesnar doing good against kongo or even arlovski if he got him down, but he could have problems with guys like carwin, gabe, barnett and of course fedor.but it will be interesting to see how he does.

  42. hakeem

    March 27, 2009 at 11:31 pm

brock will mess him up mir cant stand with him and if lesnar is smart he wont go to the ground with him he should do what frank mir did in his last fight knock him down and make him get back up i just hope mir is bleeding hes so cocky at the end of his last he said he was gonna make lesnar famous for the postion he breaks him in so well have to see but gooooooooo lesnarrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
