UFC 97: Chuck Liddell vs Mauricio Shogun Rua

With a win over Mark Coleman at UFC 93, Mauricio Shogun Rua has earned himself a shot at the “Iceman” Chuck Liddell at UFC 97 on April 18 in Montreal, Canada.

The fight was originally set to take place last year at UFC 85 in the UK, but Rua injured his knee and was forced to have surgery.

The Iceman went on to get brutally knocked out by the current UFC light heavyweight champion Rashad Evans at UFC 88.

First of all i would like to say that i am a fan of Shogun Rua and have followed his carreer since his first fight at Pride having said that and taken into consideration that he was out for more than a year , he looked great in the first round against Coleman out punching him and using his knees , however as the fight progressed he seemed to fatigue and looked out of breath and at one point in the third round could have lost the fight but recovered and tko ed coleman . i have to say that this is by far not Shoguns best performance and against Liddell His conditioning will have to be on point.

If Chuck can't win this fight then he should retire. Especially the way Shogun has looked after being in the UFC.

chuck isnt the best he's ever been but he is no mark coleman and i see 1 more highlight real knokout for the iceman before he retires

I see retirement in the future for the Iceman when he loses this one.

Right cause Shogun really put a hurtin on old man Coleman with ez! lol

    January 18, 2009 at 8:52 am

chuck is a horrible matchup for an inshape shogun. shogun like to rushforward and throw bombs thats what chuck loves. he will counter and punish shogun. shogun has good takedowns but i dont see him gettin chuck to the ground easily at all. unless shogun changes camps and gets someone to really put him through a good training camp he will lose. the problem is that when shogun was at chute box he had great sparring partners and coaches who would push him no stop. now he is comming back from a horrible injury and has his own gym where he's the boss and nobody tells him what to do. ninja and dos santos just arent enough training partners. i think he will be better next fight but i said that after the forest fight so who knows. i wish him the best he has all the potential in the world but he better hit the weghts get his body in shape up the cardio about 5 million times if hes gunna ever be champ in the ufc. i really wanted him to succeed but so far its not looking like he's gunna live up to the hype. lol lets see a rematch between him and overeem. hasnt he beat overeem like 2 or 3 times? i dont think that would happen again lol. but i really think overeem is on roids nobody gets that much bigger in that short of time without a little help.

  7. steve

    January 18, 2009 at 11:58 am

Overeem has always been a very big 205er. He has just actually dedicated himself to lifting weights to gain power. It was the best move he ciould have made. Shogun hs beat him twice but Overeem was holding his own in both at one time and had looked good. The punch shogun landed on Overeem in the second fight coming down in Overeems guard was sick. Shogun should be able to really put it to chuck imo. He is very much like anderson in that he can hit u from any angle with and kind of punch knee kick. He doesnt hold anything back and isvery dangerous from his back so he ca afford to d that. Dont see Chuck KOing him at all. Chuck hasnt KO'd anyone latey. In 2007 he didnt KO or even drop anyone and though he missed most of 2008 he never even hurt Rashad with any punch. Chuck just doesnt look sharp on his feet anymore. He isnt landing the punches he use t and its ben a huge reason why he hasnt done good. He is like Wand if he dont KO u he has a more then decent chance of losing by decision. Atleast lately.

  8. dane drebin

    January 18, 2009 at 3:15 pm

ya overeem dedicated himself to lifting weights and taking steroids lol just my oppinion. i wouldnt be surprised if shogun took roids too seein as how different he performs in the states but whether or not its because of his injuries we will never know. i have no proof so im not gunna accuse them very hard. maybe we will see if overeem ever fights in affliction or ufc. chuck hasnt ko'd anyone lately but he's been fighting top competition and punching power is the last thing to go. u better believe if shogun has his hands below his waist in the third chuck will knock him out in a bad way.

  9. steve

    January 18, 2009 at 4:19 pm

Shogun s top competition and he sure as hell has better defense than Wanderlei. Not to mention u say chuck hasnt knocked anyone out because they are top competition but what do u call Jardine. IMO Jardine is not even close to as good as Shogun. Even a gassed shogun could beat Jardine. I really cant remember chuck ever actually KOing anyone besides Randy Couture and I think he KO'd Mezger right. I think chucks power is overrated but hey he can definetly stun ppl but as far as power like rashad and rampage I just dont think he has it. Either way does anyone else see this as another way of trying to get chuck Liddell back into title contention?

  10. dane drebin

    January 18, 2009 at 4:51 pm

chuck has wins by KO over tito, Randy, Vernon white, Overeem, Mezger, Randleman, steve heath, and babalu and thats not even including his tko's check fight finder

i think jardine would mess shogun up at this point. shogun might come back but he's only been out of the first round in 6 of his 20 profesional fights. the guy has no cardio and until he does he's not gunna be destroying anyone in the top ten. seeing his performance lastnight you seriously think he can hang with the top fighters in th 205 pound division right now? coleman was standing there with his hands down liek a punching bag and he could hardly put him away. that fight seriously reminded me of kimbo vs thompson. two people just rolling around slugishly and throwing one punch at a time not even 2 punch combos. and jardine's chin is suspect but he is in the top ten and has beaten forest, chuck, vera, and imo stephan. that stephan decision was a bad one. i dont think he is the champ or anything but he's in the top ten and a good win for anyone. did u even watch the coleman shogun fight lastnight steve because i think everyone on this website would agree with me that both fighters should be ashamed of their performances. shogun had the technical skill and coleman had the strength but both go out the window when u run out of stamina and both those fighters proved that lastnight. shoguns knee is either still not totally healed and he couldnt train cardio or he is just lazy. either way he better use this as a wake up call cuz chucks almost 40 but he is still not someone u want to look past at all.

  11. dane drebin

    January 18, 2009 at 4:59 pm

and wand would totally wreck shogun right now atleast wand keeps his hands up and never gasses. wand takes this sport seriously and the fans seriously and puts on good performances everytime. u never see him gassed after 2 rounds. someone being paid as much as shogun is shouldnt be allowed to come in out of shape. but u never know mir got way more out of shape than shogun and he is finally at top form. it was just a real disappointment seeing shogun looking like he did lastnight i had relly high hopes for him and every time he fights i talk him up so much to my friends who dont know the sport very well and im just tired of him letting me down kinda.

  12. steve

    January 18, 2009 at 7:36 pm

Ya i watched on the internet. Shogun was putting good combinations together and like i said in the other post I dont think he thought it was gonna even go to the second round. I think shogun didnt train that hard for this fight. Jardine wouldnt mess shogun up if shogun was complelty gassed imo. I never said chuck doesnt have power or a lot of tko wins. He doest have KO power. That means knocking the guy out actually. Not having a ref stop it. Chuck never KO'd tito Vernon and the only reason Overeem lost to him is b/c he gassed go back and watch the fight. That wasnt a KO either.Rashad KOs ppl and so does Rampage. Chuck not so much. His power is overrated.

  13. Jake

    January 18, 2009 at 10:13 pm

Shogun is overrated and out of shape. People need to wake up and get off these former pride guys nuts. Coleman is a human punching bag no defense and no offense. Yet shogun managed to keep this fight close. This was the guy he said he was going to make suffer. The only ones that suffered were us the fans. We had to sit thru this boring battle of out of shape has beens.

Pride star = mediocre MMA. These guys don't look as good when they don't have a japanese can to fight every other fight. Or as big because they get tested now.

  14. tom

    January 19, 2009 at 12:15 am

i have been saying this sence SHogun was fighting for pride that he is overrated…if shogun fights like he did his weekend then i do see chuck knocking out shogun..

did yall know chuck has almost gone 2 years with out knocking out anyone..

  15. tom

    January 19, 2009 at 12:18 am

chucks has had 4 fights he has only won 1 of the 4..

he also got knocked out 2 times in his last 4 fights..also hasnt knock anyone out in like 2 years.. chuck is done bu shogun is also so idk

  16. Luke

    January 19, 2009 at 2:57 am

I dont get why people think Shogun is done. He is still in his 20's and has not fought in a year after surgery. he could come back and be dominant but he needs time to get his health right.

The Coleman fight was very dull, but i was thinking it was a better idea matching 2 out of shape guys together and making a dull but close fight, rather than them fighting individual fights against guys who are 100 % healthy and looking terrible, losing the fight and their reputations.

If Shogun returns to PRIDE form i believe he will beat Liddell, If the Shogun that we saw on saturday shows up Chuck will win.

  17. roy

    January 19, 2009 at 2:59 am

jake i don't agree with the pride=med mma fighter

you left off rampage,a silva, fedor.alot of people say look at how they start losing when they come to the ufc wandy already started losing before pride went under and since coming to the ufc has fought top guys every fight and his last loss(rampage pride).

  18. icemanrcks

    January 19, 2009 at 4:32 am

shogun is not at all ready for top fighters. he is lazy and chucks head is out of his ass now. this is a fight he wants and i think he will k.o. shogun. shogun was getting tagged everytime coleman through a jab. that is what chuck uses to set up his right hand. as far as chuck not having power ask anybody who he has hit they will tell you the man has power. jardines post fight interview he said in the first round the punches that hit him in the arm hurt. didnt know why chuck stopped pressing. i am gonna take chuck via. k.o.

  19. Nate Fury

    January 19, 2009 at 7:30 am

Alot of people think Liddell is reachng the end of his career, however, I like his chances in this fight. A win here would put him back in contention and gain him back alot of his credability. Shogun has not impressed in his two UFC fights and he looks to have terrible cardio. I think Liddell has a good chance of recording at least one more memorable Iceman KO, like the many that made him famous.

  20. dane drebin

    January 19, 2009 at 8:08 am

steve look it up chuck won the first tito fight by KO and the second by TKO. He also beat vernon white by KO. i named off all of his KO's and said thats not even including his TKO's. Learn to read bud. This shit isnt even worth fighting with you over because its not speculation or oppinion its straight facts. look up his wins/losses and how they were won on any website and you will see im right. get a grip on reality man u come off as a complete moron when u spout off about shit when u have no idea what ur talkin bout.

Luke- i agree with you im not saying shogun is done for sure im just saying if the shogun that showed up to fight coleman with his hands below his waist and getting gassed after a round and a half. he will lose to chuck and probably by knock out.

  21. Businessman

    January 19, 2009 at 11:00 am

The interesting part about this fight is that they have both looked terrible lately. Rua has now lost his last 2 of his last 3 fights, with only win, coming as a barely win over an old, dehydrated Coleman and Lidell is 1 and 3 with his only win coming against and and old and bad Silva. Rua is still young and possibly still recovering from breaking his arm and his knee injuries but he better not only win but look good in this one. I do agree that this is not a good match-up for him though because if he presses forward to much, Lidell could counter punch him out of the octagon. Something tells me that he is gonna be stubborn and not learn from the blueprint that has been set on how to beat Lidell. He may be one or two losses away from being out of the UFC.

I agree with Nate…you could also add the African Assasin (sp?) and Marcus Arelio. You can also add UFC guys that became Pride and now are back to the UFC that have looked bad or at least inconsistent: Marc Coleman, Jens Pulver, and Ricardo Almeida. Really only Anderson Silva, Minoutaro, and Rampage have had success. Wow, was I wrong. Back in the day I would have put my money on the Pride fighters being better than the UFC.

  22. steve

    January 20, 2009 at 11:00 am

Ya Pride guys suck. Thats why Dana brought Chuck over to Pride and tried to get the match with Wanderlei but Chuck lost in the tourney and nevermade it to Wand. Chuck was beat by Rampage who went on to ge KO'd by Wand. Dane Drebin u dont know what KO means do you. KO is when the guy is knocked out. Go back and watch those fights. Vernon just didnt want anymore so he flopped like a fish to the ground holding his eye. He wasnt unconscious. Tito go back and watch the fight took out his mouth piece right after he hit the ground and the ref stopped it. Thats not a KO. A ko is Salmon and Rashad. Chuck and Rashad. Randleman crocop. Rampage Wand 1 and 3. Arona Rampage. These are all actual KO's. If u have to look up on a list whether or not someo0ne is knocked out u obviously dont know what it means lol. I dont care what someone on Sherdog put the end of the fight. KO and tko big difference. Rampage can ko chuck cant. Oh wait he did KO randy lmao but thats like KO Jardine. Oh yeah Chcuck couldnt even KO him. wait no not even tko;)

  23. dane drebin

    January 20, 2009 at 11:18 am

ur right man all the record books including the ufc website and sherdog are wrong man. why should they even keep records when they have a tool like u to decide how it really happened. the world apologizes to u.

and all this pride is better ufc better is retarded. each fighter is different. rampage, nog and anderson were pride fighters and are very successful. shogun, wand and soko havent done too well and were pride fighters. each fighter should be judged individually beacuse they fight individually. pride vs ufc would not be onsided clean sweep in anyway. they bith had awesome fighters at the time and its annoying as shit to here people say oh pride sucked or oh ufc sucked. judge each fighter individually not what organization they fight under.

i think shogun looked like shit against coleman…they both looked like shit in that fight…shoguns cardio was horrible…if he burned out against coleman then he'll burn out even faster against chuck seeing how there will prolly be more punches thrown

this steve guy is a shit hole. i cant stand to even read what he is wrighting but yet i do. Dont ask me why. he has no good points. tito in the first fight got hit a straight shot right through the guard to the chin that put him down. You bring the ko of chuck by rampage up but he was not out til a flury of hammer fists hit him after he hit the ground. but to you still a ko your a dork. if anybody has been on this site long you know or will come to find out steve is a window warrior. trashes everybody that has a couple loses through the computer. if you where able to vote anybody off this web site make it this prick!!

iceman rocks I never said Rampage KO'd chuck Liddell. Ur a fucking idiot. Learnhow to read. He did flash ko chuck tho if were being honest here. He was limp for a second. But thats not even the KO im talking about. Dane u keep bringing up the records. Go back watch the Tito vs Liddell 1 fight. At the end watch it and tell me if tito was KO'd. Name the last time he KO'd someone besides randy. Come on do it. This all started when u said "Chuck was gonna KO shogun in a BAD WAY" LMAO chuck doesnt KO anyone in a bad way. That is my point. I think Chuck lacks the power to ko or tko Shogun and if he wins it will be by shogun gassing thats it. LMAO Icmanrocks im 5th in coments and Tom ur at the very top so why laugh ? Iceman wats the point of u even comenting? U are only talking shit to me and not making any points at all. Wat does tito gettin dropped have to do with being KO'd? He wasnt out. But good point!???

  29. dane drebin

    January 21, 2009 at 3:48 pm

i named off all the people he has knocked out im not gunna do it again. why dont u name all the people shogun has knocked out lately or in the U.S. ever. ur a hater steve plain and simple and if its a fighter u dont like u bring up rediculous points from left field to bash on them. chuck will be remembered in the books and by the fans for knocking out tito, randy, babalu, the fighter ur so nut happy over now that hes roided on a quick 50 pounds overeem and all the other fighters i named whether u wanna say they "were really out or not" me and everybody else could give a fuck. Near 40 year old chuck never gasses and has looked a lot better then shogun whether he has lost or not lately and he will be the favorite for a reason now go kill urself i feel dumber every time i read what u write.

    January 21, 2009 at 6:51 pm

you should feel smarter. steve dosent have the legit arguement to make anybody feel stupid. people still fear chuck you would if he walked up to you knowing what shit you say about him. and i think it was you who said you watched it on the internet and shogun had good combo's. ya right. he never through more than three strikes at one time and with a slug my type of guy like coleman you are gonna land good shots. chuck would have ko'ed tko'ed ,how ever you want to say it, coleman in the first round. my opinon. just quit hating one of the top three fighters who helped make this sport.

  31. Luke

    January 21, 2009 at 11:02 pm

He may be a fighter that truly helped this sport achieve what it has so far, but Chuck Liddell is no where near the top 3 fighters in the world at the moment. He barely falls in the top 5 in the 205lb division anymore.

People like icemanrcks need to realise Chuck cant handle the top guys anymore, the sad thing about it is Chuck still thinks he can too.

I give Chuck Liddell all the respect in the world but it seems he is just carrying on fighting because of his name, now there is nothing wrong with that, but i think we need to be realistic here and Chuck Liddell will never get the belt back or come close in my opinion. That is unless he beats Shogun and Dana goes all power mad and tries to convince us that Chuck is worthy of a title shot before Rampage, Machida, T Silva, Griffin or even Jardine.

I don't really understand all the live that shogun gets. Hes got two fights in the octagon, lost one to an "underdog" and didnt look very impressive fighting Mark "the fossil" Coleman. If it takes him 3 rounds to finish coleman chuck can hang

I became a fan of Shogun while he was in Pride FC, and at the time the guy seemed unstoppable. He destroyed Quinton Jackson and made many of his opponents look bad. He seriously does not look like the 205 king of yesterday. His striking is not as percise, and he generally looks out of shape. I hope we get to see the old Shogun when he fights Chuck.

  35. roy

    January 22, 2009 at 3:59 am

  36. steve

    January 22, 2009 at 5:34 am

For the last time I didnt start an arguement. Dane Drebin just got butt sore b/c he can face facts that Liddel doesnt have complete KO power like rampage and rashad. But yet Dane thinks Shogun will be KO Shogun in a bad way. "I really cant remember chuck ever actually KOing anyone besides Randy Couture and I think he KO’d Mezger right. I think chucks power is overrated but hey he can definetly stun ppl but as far as power like rashad and rampage I just dont think he has it. Either way does anyone else see this as another way of trying to get chuck Liddell back into title contention?" This is my post that started this whole arguement. And plz anyone who actually watches UFC plz tell Dane that Chuck dont KO anyone besides randy and that he didnt actually KO tito either time. Its like im arguing with a guy who doesnt know what a real knockout is. Because the ufc.com has it ko thats what he thinks it is. It was tko. Chuck doesnt have power like Rashad. Heres my point Chuckcould never KO Rashad like rashad did to him. Dane u started this when u were acting like chuck is gonna ko shogun when chuck is the one always getting dropped lately. Get off the old mans nuts. He isnt top level. Even a gassed shogun could put Iceman down.

  37. kom34

    January 22, 2009 at 5:42 am

chuck definitely has ko power. if a guy can knock you down while he's back peddling then he does have it. besides that if you hit the right button anyone can be put out. i'll give you that rashad and ramp have the ability to take someones head off and put you out cold.

  38. dane drebin

    January 22, 2009 at 6:48 am

OK STEVE YOU GOT ME he only has semi KO power not the total knockout power you speak of. lol u sound like a dumbass. COMPLETE KO POWER hahahaha. i never said ur home boys rashad and rampage dont hit harder stop crying i just said that chuck can knock shogun out when mark coleman is landing shots at will when he's someone who in his prime had no stand up at all and shogun after a roubnd had his hands completely down. chuck wont let that shit fly if shogun is gassed he will be all over him. and a gased shogun could barely beat coleman and fucking gave up his back and let forest sink in a choke u act liek he has some iron will that will make him win against chuck if he gasses give me a break. why do you think chuck is the most well known mma fighter out there? because he became famous for knocking fools out. who the fuck cares what you think man? chuck knows he knocked out all those guys and so does the rest of the world. people will look back at his record 10 years from now and remember all of those knockouts and there wont be next to it (steve doesnt think he was really out) lol. your like one of those people that makes up shit so much that u actually believe your own bullshit. Let me guess you dont have a girlfrind do you steve? and if you somehow do i bet shes about 2 more rediculous stevie rants away from blowing her brains out on the kitchen wall. you sound like the one who is butt hurt because u never bring up good points and i own u on a regular basis. i state facts like lesnar lost by knee bar a move that can cripple you if done right while ur saying over and over again it was the dreaded footlock that cant even hurt u har har har. lesnar and mir would both slap u in the lips if they saw you cuz ur so fucking stupid. Your the same guy who if we look back in these posts far enough was saying how kimbo would knock wand out and how everyone wasnt giving him enough credit and all this until kimbo got knocked out by a pink haird tuf reject on one foot. then you never talked about th guy again just put ur tail between ur legs and hoped people wouldnt remember u used to eb all over his ball sack. and i dont even like chuck lidell man! i never fucking root for him. i think he's way past his prime. but i say it like it is. he never gasses even at 39 looks better than shoguns tired ass right now. shogun straight gave up in his match with forest. and he would have gave up with coleman if coleman had any sort of a gas tank. the fact that coleman while looking like he was having a heart attack cuz he was so out of gas was damn near even in the fight scoring take down after takedown and landing slow ass jabs on shoguns face was pathetic and anyone with half a brain and a pair of nuts can see that.

  43. Tim

    January 23, 2009 at 9:05 am

Just think Lesnar vs Couture TKO called but very well could of been a KO as well but due to how Randy rebounded slightly they had to call it a TKO while Rampage vs Silva that was clearly a KO, where there is no rebound.

  45. Todd

    January 25, 2009 at 5:36 pm

Ok, i see some trouble clarifing a KO vs a TKO a KO is when a strike knocks you to the point that you can not defend yourself a tko is a ref stoppage due to you are not intelligently defending yourself. A KO comes in many forms and is used loosely. i Have personally punched somebody in the face and there body went LIMP completely and looked like a snow angel that is my defitnition Of KO but not the MMA worlds in does need clarification. BUT CHUCK DOES HAVE KO POWER the overeem fight vintage chuck over hand right knocked boy stupid WATCH IT STEVE. Not a cold KO but that would have put every one in this room down. I Just watched that fight like 2 hrs ago for the fist time in slow mo google it :)…….

I would put 200 on liddell he is Hungry and overdue. RUA is the most overatted fighter ………….. PERIOD he has some important wins but training camps make the difference and liddell is traning with a new camp on the side i think its America's TOP Team Watch out this has been liddell's weakness is his loyalness to Hackleman. he needs a new camp and that what he got….. KEEP YOUR HANDS UP CHUCK PLEASe>>>> PLEASE>>>> at least when you in striking distance…… look at his last 2 ko losses a traditional boxing stance would have blocked both GURANTEED… I know liddell trademark is hands down but luck ran out you my boy chuck please just keep your hands UP ………………………….

So we have Chuck v.s. Shogun & Jackson v.s. Jardine, Machida just won, Forrest is out for a while, and Evans is waiting in the wings. I think it is apparent that Dana wants to get to get Liddel one more title shot. It seems to me like Machida should get first crack at Evans. That means if Liddel wins he will get a chance to avenge one of his previous losses against the winner of Jackson vs Jardine. If he wins that fight (fat chance against Rampage, 50/50 against Jardin) he would get his title shot against Evans/Machida. From there we would be left with winner of Evans/Machida vs Chuck/Jackson/Jardine to fight a returning Forrest for the title. I know its looking deep into the future & it could go a couple different ways but thats my view, and the fastest way for Dana to get Liddell back in the title picture.

If Shogun chases Chuck its lights out for Shogun. If Shogun stands there or makes Chuck chase him its anybodys game. Both have knockout power but we as fans never know what kind of shape Shogun will be in.

Rampage will destroy Jardine. I also think Rampage should be fighting rashad instead of Jardine then Machida should fight the winner. I like Chuck and would like to see hime the champion again, but he should not be in line for a title shot until he beats fighters like Forrest, Rampage, Jardine, Machida.
