UFC 99: Cheick Kongo Replaces Heath Herring Against Cain Velasquez

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has announced that heavyweight Cheick Kongo will replace Heath Herring against Cain Velasquez at UFC 99 on June 13 from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany.

Herring was forced to withdraw from the event after being struck with a lengthy illness that has interfered with his training for the fight.

Both Kongo and Velasquez are bidding for top contender status in the UFC heavyweight division.

i would love to see cheick win but idk Cain is good on the ground and that is what Kongo is weak at, Also Kongo isnt that Big of a heavy weight but he is a strong Heavy weight..

I think Hearth was going to kill Cain but now idk its a 50/50A if you ask me

lengthy illness? sounds like they just want to set up a number one contnder match to me.

Kongo vs. Velasquez should be a very solid fight. I think Kongo will have the advantage in the standup, however on the ground it will be in Velasquez's world. If Cain can withstand the striking power of kongo and can get inside to take the fight down, then Cain should win this fight.

I want to see Kongo win cause I would like to see Lesnar get in the ring with someone who can knock him out or at bare minimum legitimately test his chin to find out if he is for real.

SteveO: it should have been a number one contender match before, if youre going to use that logic.

    Heath kicked Kongos ass.

Aww man what a piss off. I wanted to see Heath fight.

Kongo by knees to the balls

damn this card is gunna be packed with god fights now. i think velasquez could get the upset in this one and i think he would pose a bigger threat to brock because he has sick standup and he knows that the word SPRAWL means unlike kongo. Lesnar is a horrible matchup for kongo.

i agree dane, unless kongo hit him in the first couple seconds its a bad match up for him.i hate that herring is out but this is a good replacement or cro cop would have been nice and this card is stacked it might be better than ufc 100.

i'm glad kongo has a tough fight before getting a shot at the title. i hope cain wins because kongo is one of the cockiest fighters in the ufc. plus he needs to get some help for that ocd chest pound.

Kongo could not get past gatekeeper Herring. He does not deserve a title shot….. just sayin' :/

wow, cain must be shitting in his pants right now. kongo is no joke. he has very good stand up, especially since he trains with rampage. cain better bring it. if he can hang with kongo, i think he can hang with any HW in the division.

wats with all this kongo hype? Cain shitting his pants? come on kongo decisioned a wornout crocop after he destroyed crocops balls with a knee. who else has he beaten? Kongo couldnt even beat herring. I was gunna pick Cain over herring so im definetly picking Cain over kongo. the only way cain loses if he thinks he's a better striker than he is and doesnt take kongo down which would be stupid of him. Velasquez has all the tools to derail the kongo hype and i think he's gunna do it.

I am not loving on Kongo but he has looked fairly impressive in his last few fights and if the fight will stay standing he brings it so hes fun to watch, thats why i like him.

Although I love Cain, I think Kongo's out for blood. I'd like to see Mir when his fight against Lesnar, but a Lesnar/Kongo fight would be BA. But after all these guys, who's next? I don't want to start a "Fedor needs to join the UFC" discussion…but it looks like thats exactly what I'm doing.

strikeforce is getting some good hw's as well with aa,overeem, werdum, buentello and even grim there starting to build a devision witch means less guys for the ufc, i could see fedor going to strikeforce after affliction.

Cain is going to take this one. While I beleive that Kongo might be bigger, Cain is not much smaller and should be able to take him down and ground and pound him. Kongo has improved his takedown defense and he has improved at getting off hi back when he has been taken down but he has not faced anyone with the skills that Cain has. Lesnar would kill Kongo as well…not so much because Lesnar is great but because he would not be a good match-up for Kongo, just like Cain isn't either.
