UFC Fight Night Preview: Maia vs. Shields

Shields was a powerhouse prior to joining the UFC in 2010. He fought in several other fight organizations including Strikeforce, K-1, and Elite XC. He was undefeated in 12 fights, defeating such talent as Dan Henderson, Mayhem Miller, Paul Daley, Robbie Lawler, Carlos Condit, and Yushin Okami.

Jake Shields Highlights

His UFC career has been shaky, winning only 3 out of 6 bouts. He also fought champion Georges St. Pierre for the belt in 2011, which he lost by unanimous decision. Also, before joining the UFC he was well respected for his submission game. He had finished 6 of his opponents in the 1st or 2nd round. Shields has not submitted anyone since being in the UFC, going the distance in the 3 fights that he has won. After suffering a personal loss in his life, can Shields bounce back to his old superstar form, or are we seeing the final stages in the career of one of the greatest fighters in MMA?

Jake Shields Talks About Fight With Demain Maia

Demian Maia has spent his entire career as a UFC fighter, joining the organization in 2007. He started off fighting in the middleweight division, where he was immediately successful. He won his first 5 fights, all by submission. He defeated Chael Sonnen, Nate Quarry, Jason Macdonald, Ed Herman, and Ryan Jensen. In his 6th fight he was defeated by KO in a loss to Nate Marquardt.

After another win in his next fight against Dan Miller, he got a title shot against champion Anderson Silva. He came up short, losing to the champ by unanimous decision. After the loss to Silva, Maia would win 3 out of the next 5 fights. His last fight being a unanimous decision loss to Chris Weidman. He made the decision to drop down to welterweight after that fight.

So far it seems like a wise choice as Maia has won his first 3 fights in the division, defeating Dong Hyun Kim, Rick Story, and Jon Fitch. He seems to be rejuvenated, and looks to return to the form he had when he first entered the UFC.

Demian Maia Highlights

Can Jake Shields return to his winning ways and be the dominant fighter he used to be, or will Demian Maia continue his assault on the welterweight division as he works his way to another title shot?

Also featured on the main card is another dynamic welterweight bout between up and comer Erick Silva as he takes on veteran Dong Hyun Kim, a light heavyweight match between dangerous striker Thiago Silva and fan favorite Matt Hamill, a light heavyweight match between solid strikers Fabio Maldonado and Joey Beltran, a welterweight match between veteran Mike Pierce and dangerous submission artist Rousimar Palhares, who debuts at 170, and a bantamweight match between Raphael Assuncao and TJ Dillashaw.
