randy couture leaves the ufc

According to TFN, ” Captain America” Randy Couture has announced he will no longer fight in the UFC and it looks like the UFC not signing Fedor Emeliananko was a one of the big deciding factor in his decision.

“I appreciate this opportunity the sport of MMA and the UFC has given me,” the UFC Hall-of-Famer said. “However, I’m tired of swimming upstream at this stage with the management of the UFC. It only makes sense at this point in my career to fight Fedor Emelianenko, and since he’s now signed with another organization, I feel like it’s time to resign and focus on my other endeavors.”

The Wrestling Observer is reporting that Couture was not happy with the UFC promising big paydays to outside fighters and still feeding its own fighters scrap.

It is known Couture was one of the top UFC fighters who was unhappy when reading about the huge money guaranteed in the company’s offers to Emelianenko, because he felt he and a few others were the fighters who helped build the current popularity and they weren’t getting guaranteed income for fights anywhere near that level, particularly since they were bigger drawing cards.

He will leave the UFC Heavyweight title and his UFC broadcasting career on the table as he seeks out other opportunities. It is uncertain whether he will seek out the fight with Fedor. Here is what Randy’s Agent had to say:

“Randy’s contract was on a fight-by-fight basis, and that’s the way he said he was always going to take it — fight by fight,” said Matt Walker, Couture’s agent at The Gersh Agency. “His acting career is accelerating at an astronomical rate, and without the support he felt some of his peers were receiving in the fight business, this was the logical choice.”

This is shocking news coming from the legendary UFC hall of famer.

Here is UFC president Dana Whites response to the Couture announcement:

“I’m not surprised at all by Randy’s decision. I talked to Randy several weeks ago and he said that if he couldn’t fight Fedor, then he has nothing left to prove in the sport of mixed martial arts.

“He has been doing a lot of acting, and I know he is in South Africa right now filming a movie. I think it’s a great move for Randy’s acting career to retire from fighting while he is on top.

“As we all know, Randy retired before. The landscape in MMA changes every day. So when he is ready to come out of retirement again, he is still under contract with me, and I’m ready to promote him.”

Dana is no Vince McMahon, but trying to be like that is costing him big fighters like Fedor and Couture. He screwed up big time with the Fedor deal. I hope we get to see Couture vs. Fedor someday in M-1.

What a great fighter Couture is, the day had to come eventually….just sucks it was now. Dana is such a dick but the sports is so popular it just doesn't matter how big of a dick he is or to whom.

Dana is a good guy. I'm not trying to be contrivercial but Dana has too much Pride (no pun) and wouldnt close on Fedors terms. Dana is a good guy and he make MMA what it is today with TUF. Fedor, good riddance, although I'm sad that I wont see how good Couture is anymore.

Couture is a class act & in my eyes has done more for MMA than Dana. He showed dignity if he won a fight or lost & always spoke his mind openly & honestly. What a loss.

As for Fedor not signing with the UFC, I'm sick about it. We will never really know what the deal breaker was but it's nice to know that to some fighters money is not always the answer.

Untill these guys learn that you don't have to sell your soul to fight in MMA, they will be under paid & treated like the $ signs that they are to these ORGs. Sometimes it takes the Coutures & Fedors of this world to set the bar a little higher.

I've got it – out with Dana and in with Randy! If Gene Simmons can have success as an entrepreneur, why not?

Couture said he wants Fedor – he'll go to Fedor. And I'll put my $40 towards that fight and for that month tell the UFC to go stroke itself!

This isn't cool man. Going to be too many different MMA organizations. That is going to make it tough for the best fighters to fight each other. Sound like boxing to anyone else? No undisputed champs.

Now you're talking "crynot", the only language UFC may be able to understand. My money will go the same direction as yours.

As for too many different Orgs., I think they will weed themselves out & the better ones will get the better fighters. If you only have one big Org. then they can set the rules on what the fighters are paid, etc.. And as far as I'm concerned UFC hasn't been fair about the pay these guys get compared to the profit thats being made. They need a few good Orgs to keep themselves honest & treat the fighters right. Tournaments between Orgs would be great to watch.

I think UFC & Dana White are getting a taste of reality & that is that the MMA doesn't rotate around their big fat wads of money. They haven't treated some of their fighters with much respect, one being Diaz, but since a lot of people didn't care much for him, they got by with it for a long time. I was proud the day he told them to stick it, now a few BIG names are doing the same.

We pay all their bill! So if we want open turnaments or weight class tournies we need to speak up. Dana White doesn't give a crap about me, but he does care where I spend my $40, $80, sometimes even more a month. I took Showtime just so I could watch Diaz fight. I love MMA & that's why I take a minute to write in to this site, I want to know what everyone else is thinking.

i agree jude. cross – org tourneys would be great, but it sounds like alot to negotiate, particularly if owners of other organizations are anything like furtado – white.

Heard that a few days ago about Couture & my hats off to him. I also read that he & Fedor were being ofered a million a piece to fight & an extra mill to the winner. Hope it happens.

As for White & Furtado they will jump on board or be lost in the wake. It would bring in big bucks & that's all that the UFC org. responds to. Maybe it will never happen but it sure doesn't hurt to hope.

Now Dana is saying that Couture can retire but he cant get out of the contract. He said Couture has to fight two more before he is let out. Bad move on his part if he upholds this because people are already mad about the UFC losing Couture and Fedor. Everyone likes Couture and if Dana stops him from fighting because of that contract that will really set people off.

Danas power trip hasn't won him any popularity points & it's probably a wise idea for him to tread lightly on the Couture issue. Hopefully they can come to a reasonable agreement that will benifit both sides.
