Tonight’s hyped World Cagefighting Organization (WCO) event from the San Diego Sports Arena was abruptly cancelled by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) after the full funding for the fighter purses was not made. Valor fighting was the promoter the the event.

“At the eleventh hour, the commission was informed there were insufficient funds to pay the fighters,” CSAC executive director Armando Garcia told “In the end, we had to cancel the event.”

The WCO event was plagued from the start, with fighters not getting cleared by the CSAC in time for the fight and disorganized weigh-ins.

Fighter are required by the CSAC to receive 20% of their contracted purses by January 18.

The WCO event featured named fighters like Joe Riggs, Renato “Babalu” Sobral, Vernon “Tiger” White, Ricco Rodriguez, Mike Kyle, Mark Kerr and David “The Crow” Loiseau.

Here is what the WCO put up on their website:

The WCO regretfully informs you that the MMA show titled “The Return” at The San Diego Sports Arena has been cancelled due to circumstances beyond our control.
Our sincerist apologies to all of the fighters and sponsors who supported the event. The WCO did everything in it’s power to assure this event took place. Unfortunately the commission decided to cancel the show in the final hour.

This kind of thing gives the sport such a bad name.It is hard to beleive that anyone can promote a fight regardless of their ability to produce result.I watched the promoter the night before the evnt continue to sell it in spite of the fact that he knew that their was no way the promotion would deliver.I bought the tickets the day of the event and drove 2 hrs to see the fight what a total disappointment. The WCO is a complete joke.I hope Inside MMA never has anyone from this organization on their program again.

    Disappointed fan,

Looks like they went way over their head trying to get some big names and couldn't even afford the fighters. They sure screwed that up and I would be mad too if I had to drive out there, buy tickets, and then they cancel at the last minute. Thats beyond bad promoting.

I bought 3rd row tickets for this event and drove 8 1/2 hours to San Diego to see this card. I am so pissed. I wasted $200 on hotel and another $250 on gas, had to find a babysitter for my kids and ended up just going to the movies. I feel totally ripped off. I will never go to a future WCO event. I wouldn't be so angry right now if I was informed of the cancelation prior to driving all the way there. Very disappointed.

I didn't even know about this event till recently so they must have done a real crappy job of promoting this on the web.

This california state athletic commission is so corrupt and controled by the ufc no wonder so many promoters lives have been ruined. The true story is about to surface of this complete mma monopoly. I had a mma license in california in 2000 issued by the california state athletic commission. 2001 ufc was approved in las vegas no longer was mma allowed in california. amazing because fertida was a las vegas commissioner there lawyer Kirk hendrix was attorney general for the commission and now the head director of the commission Mark Ratner works for the ufc now. He was hired to establish commissions in other states so they can have more control of the sport. Open your eyes. if you want to see all proof of these allegations e-mail me at

    WCO Cancelled:

This story was posted on the ufc news for one. It says fighters are required by the csac to receive 20% of contracted purses by january 18th.

This has never been required in boxing. Another new law

for mma only. This out of control Armando Garcia should of worked with them. They put up a $20,000.00 bond for security purposes. He should of let them cut one or two fights to get the show off. Maybe give them a special permit like the one ufc has for ultimate fighter. They are not required to pay the fighters 20% of contracted purses. Where did this ridiculous law come into effect. This is why we should allow promoters to promote amateur fights first to get there feet wet before they turn pro. But once again the ufc commission does not want amateur mma. So guess what? No amatuer even though it was approved in 2000.

Also the interview says it was plagued from the beginning with fighters not getting cleared.

Guess what happens at the commissions office.

    1. They say they did not receive the fax from the fighters.

    2. They don't answer there phones or return calls.

    3. Or what they told Paul Smith of the IFC a few days before his event was ruined. They told him that someone broke into there mail and all records were stolen. He had to scramble and get all new records of the fighters. What stress.

    4. When sakuraba was to fight royce gracie at K-1 in Los Angeles, the doctor of royce told me this. That the CSAC told him that they were not going to allow sakuraba to fight royce because the scan showed a brain tumor in sakuraba. Royce's doctor took sakuraba to two of his people and sakuraba tested good. The state employed doctor got furious and said that they must of put someone else through. Well that got Royce's doctor set on a mission and he eventually got sakuraba approved.

    5. They shut down one promoters show because he did not have the right type of ambulance. He had one from the wrong city. Come on Armando.

This is just some of the things. I will be back later to inform you more on this CSAC.

what about events at the indian casinos do they controll those too.

  10. kazja

    February 13, 2008 at 10:13 am

At a few of the reservations. The commission now is gaining more control of them by offering them more gaming. Soon they will make all reservations have to use the commission. They have a law now that if a fighter fights on a non sanctioned Indian Reservation he will never be allowed to fight in the State again. They black ball him.

I just read in MMA Weekly that the UFC tried to sue WCO for calling there event World Cagefighting Organizaion. Because it is to close to WEC, World Extreme Cage Fighting.

What a joke. I use to do an event in LA called Extreme Cage Fighting and Scott Adams use to come to our events with Chuck Liddel way before he started promoting and calling his event World Extreme Cagefighting. Come on Dana White and Fertitta step up and take kage kombat to court. They use the Octagon, they use Octagon Contenders, they use Ultimate, and also use extreme cage fighting. All you are doing is promoting there creation to the extreme. Someday some big backer is going to contact them and look out. The Original Octagon is back.

kazja, honestly, you need to (1) be a man / woman, (2) come out of the closet to reveal your proof and facts to a higher authority other than us common folks & (3) take down the UFC's monopoly. there are some young children reading cagetoday that don't understand what you are talking about, and there are older people like me that just wants to enjoy MMA for what it is and what it's worth. agreed?

    February 13, 2008 at 6:01 pm

I am just comenting to the post as everyone else is. This is my opinion you can accept it or leave it. The higher authority is the government, so that is a not! The public is the source to put and end to what is going on. As for coming out of the closet. I am opening the doors, either step out or stay in. It's up to you. Have a nice day!

The athletic commission is Corrupt. My Sister blows a guy named James Lewis, whose friends with Joe Smith. Joe Smith has a direct line to God and God said the My brother is always right and doesn’t lie. So Joe Smith gave James Lewis nine dollars. James Lewis in turn gave my Sister half of that money to blow Dana White and convince him to put pressure on the Athletic Commision to cancel this Event. I know this because I was there. It all happened in the octagon that my brother originated.

I'll bet none of you knew that. Cantact me at for proof. I'd love to share it with you. Soon I will expose this corruption…..It wont be long….any day now…..Soon…..I'll be on the news….one of these days…..

Who ever made this comment # 14 you need some help.

Claiming you are my brother. Take some meds and chill. You sound so much like dana white. The readers are opening there eyes now in support of a fighters union. We also need amateur mma. We have amateur boxing, wrestling, kick boxing but amatuer mma was shot down because of the ufc athletic commission.

    Kazja's brother,

Please relay to your brother that I am tired beyond words of him monopolizing the comments with his tirades about the UFC. I think those who care in the least bit may have seen one of the first 100 posts on the topic and asked to see the proof. The rest of us casual fans are reading the Cage Today articles and commenting on their content.

And, Dude, that was seriously funny satire.

  17. kazja

    February 14, 2008 at 4:48 am

Thomas: Is that your name or is that one of your names being used for this comment. Are you answering your own post so it can stay on top of google search engines. Or are you switching your post to other threads so it pulls me off the top of the search engines. Remember we still have freedom of speech in this country or is your friends of the ufc trying to put a stop to it. The way they put a stop to amateur mma. And Thomas you are not my brother so stop claiming to be. Dude don't you agree this is some great satire.

kazja, look, i don't want to go to war with you over this. but you are on a MMA FAN SITE in which intelligent discussion about cagetoday content is appropriate. we all know you have your opinions and that is obviously fine; but, it goes too far when you try to impose your opinions on others by telling everyone is blind and can't see the truth about MMA. you do more than just give your opinion; you're trying to almost force everyone to believe what you are saying. and frankly, it is really ruining the website, the sport of MMA, and my impression of cagetoday. if you really hate MMA so much with all the corruption, then just get out of the business of amateur MMA and be done with it. you honestly won't spread much truth here with the same 20 cagetoday fans reading this website daily; you'll just end up with really agitated individuals. what i'm saying is that you are preaching to the wrong audience. thanks for reading, and i hope i don't see any of your posts putting down MMA again.

He knows nobody likes him here but he keeps getting responses so he's going to keep writing his schitzo passages. Just pass his post by and respond to the topic at hand and I bet he leaches on to another site. I already sent an email to cage to get this guy deleted from the comment sections.

kazja is just writing what i've be noticing(SP) why did ufc buy pride? u don't hear about a pride card anywhere on cagetoday ,I'm a MMA fan so where's pride? tomas. NOBODY mentioned about the Price going up to me about UFC's Fight's from 29.99 to 44.95. I'm a FAn ,tomas. seem's like a monopolizing to me maann. Say what ! you want kaz. WHO'S next PRIDE? WCO? Strikeforce?EXCelite?

  29. kom34

    February 14, 2008 at 7:06 am

microsoft is buying yahoo to take down google. mcdonalds is offering starbucks like coffee to take control of that industry. it happens everywhere. pride put themself in a position to get bought by the ufc. just like vince mcmahon monopolized wrestling all those years.

i'm a fan of fighting and thats why i'm on this site…to talk about the sport. monopolies suck and i hate a lot of what the ufc does outside of the cage. if you dont like it support EliteXC, M1, or some other org. they seem to have some good financial backing and the ufc cant take them all over. i watch the small show and even those are entertaining….the ufc is not everything mma.

i don't get what you mean about you don't hear about pride anymore on cagetoday. there is no pride last time i checked the news. i've been on this site for a long time now and in fact the first video of pride i ever saw was on this site…Crocop KOing Wanderlei Silva.

  30. kazja

    February 14, 2008 at 7:23 am

Kom34 why do you get sucked in to this then if you don't care. It all has to do with the ties the ufc has to the commission. Ever wonder why Mc Mahon monopolizes wrestling. I told you before that he gives the commission 5% of his take voluntarely because the state does not regulate it anymore. And should not be taxed. Armando Garcia said they give the 5% even though the law has been repealed. Go figure. You should here how the contenders have control of this commission. Thats right the mom and pop country business is over because people like you love the corporate world. Its over for the working man.

if you want to rant about MMA monopolies or how corrupt something else, cagetoday is NOT the place to do it. this is not a forum; it's the comments section to comment on the topic at hand. kazja, sherdog has a nice forum that has tens of thousands of readers that will listen to what you have to say in there. but you're posting in the comments section — wrong area. and also, wrong audience.

Derek scroll to the top of this page. It is how the WCO event got cancelled. I am just voicing my opinion why it was cancelled. You guys took me off coarse with all the different questions and various brothers. I am staying on this thread until all the reasons this event was cancelled gets out to the public. This athletic commission needs to be stopped with all there authority. We need a federal commission. I heard that the Las Vegas Commission gave a Judge that was acting on it free tickets to some matches before the hearing. I love to hear what came with the outcome.

I am trying to start a M.M.A. organization I have 12 fighters several who are champions in other countries. I have never been involved in the fight business before but they came to me because I was a couple of the fighters boss on a construction job. When they won their titles they had to leave the country to fight because the U.F.C. would not use them unless they trained with their organization and thats all they wanted these guys for was to train against their own fighters. My guys got tiredd of being used to keep u.f.c. fighters in shape with no chance of going for the gold. So what I need is info on how to get an organization started.
